Overproduction of PDR3 Suppresses Mitochondrial Import Defects Associated with a TOM70 Null Mutation by Increasing the Expression of TOM72 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Most mitochondrial proteins are synthesized with cleavable amino-terminal targeting signals that interact with the mitochondrial import machinery to facilitate their import from the cytosol. We previously reported that the presequence of the F1-ATPase beta subunit precursor (pre-F1beta ) acts as an intramolecular chaperone that maintains the precursor in an import-competent conformation prior to import (P. Hajek, J. Y. Koh, L. Jones, and D. M. Bedwell, Mol. Cell. Biol. 17:7169-7177, 1997). We also found that a mutant form of pre-F1beta with a minimal targeting signal (Delta 1,2 pre-F1beta) is inefficiently imported into mitochondria because it rapidly folds into an import-incompetent conformation. We have now analyzed the consequences of reducing the pre-F1beta targeting signal to a minimal unit in more detail. We found that Delta 1,2 pre-F1beta is more dependent upon the Tom70p receptor for import than WT pre-F1beta is, resulting in a growth defect on a nonfermentable carbon source at 15°C. Experiments using an in vitro mitochondrial protein import system suggest that Tom70p functions to maintain a precursor containing the Delta 1,2 pre-F1beta import signal in an import-competent conformation. We also identified PDR3, a transcriptional regulator of the pleiotropic drug resistance network, as a multicopy suppressor of the mitochondrial import defects associated with Delta 1,2 pre-F1beta in a tom70Delta strain. The overproduction of PDR3 mediated this effect by increasing the import of Delta 1,2 pre-F1beta into mitochondria. This increased the mitochondrial ATP synthase activity to the extent that growth of the mutant strain was restored under the selective conditions. Analysis of the transcription patterns of components of the mitochondrial outer membrane import machinery demonstrated that PDR3 overproduction increased the expression of TOM72, a little studied TOM70 homologue. These results suggest that Tom72p possesses overlapping functions with Tom70p and that the pleiotropic drug resistance network plays a previously unappreciated role in mitochondrial biogenesis

In some cases, such property is then shared by all Markusevic bases in the space
Towards a Proof Theory of G\"odel Modal Logics
Analytic proof calculi are introduced for box and diamond fragments of basic
modal fuzzy logics that combine the Kripke semantics of modal logic K with the
many-valued semantics of G\"odel logic. The calculi are used to establish
completeness and complexity results for these fragments
Ozone treatment of stored potato tubers
During storage, potato tubers are susceptible to different pathogen, which can attack
the skin and flesh of the tubers. The most serious damage can be caused by rot inducing bacteria
and fungi. A possible way to prevent microbial damage may be the use of ozone in the air
ventilated through the stored tubers. However, the tubers can undergo qualitative changes, e.g.
dehydration and loss of starch content. This article presents the results of a five-month experiment
in which ozone concentration of 5 mg m-3 was periodically introduced in some of the stored potato
tubers of the cultivar ‘Dali’. All potato tubers were stored in closed storage boxes with a metal
frame and wood panels in the floor and walls (ground area 1.6×1.2 m, height 0.95 m) which were
continuously aerated using the ambient air in a potato warehouse. There was 900 kg of tubers
stored in the box. At the end of the experiment, the ozonated variant was compared with the
control (not treated). The ozone-treated tubers had 2.95 times lower incidence of infection by
rot and the number of microorganisms on healthy tubers was lower than the control. The
ozone-treated tubers were less frequently dehydrated. The water loss was higher in control by
0.86 %. There was no significant difference in silver scurf manifestation or in the starch content
between the two variants
Quantum mechanics and elements of reality inferred from joint measurements
The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument on quantum mechanics incompleteness is
formulated in terms of elements of reality inferred from joint (as opposed to
alternative) measurements, in two examples involving entangled states of three
spin-1/2 particles. The same states allow us to obtain proofs of the

Effect of UV-B radiation on the contents of UV-B absorbing compounds and photosynthetic parameters in Parmotrema austrosinense from two contrasting habitats
We studied the resistance of Parmotrema austrosinense to UV-B stress. We focused on the effects of a high dose UV-B radiation on the content of chlorophylls, carotenoids and UV-B screening compounds. Photosynthetic parameters were measured by chlorophyll fluorescence (potential and effective quantum yields, photochemical and non-photochemical quenching) and evaluated in control and UV-B-treated lichens. Lichens from two different locations in Cordoba, Argentina, were selected: (i) high altitude and dry plots at (Los Gigantes) and (ii) lowland high salinity plots (Salinas Grandes). UV-B treatment led to a decrease in the content of photosynthetic pigments and UV-B screens (absorbance decrease in 220–350 nm) in the samples from Salinas Grandes, while in Los Gigantes samples, an increase in UV-B screen content was observed. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters showed a UV-B-induced decline in FV/FM, ΦPSII and qP indicating limitation of primary photosynthetic processes in photosystem II (PSII) of symbiotic alga, more pronounced in Salinas Grandes samples. Protective mechanism of PSII were activated by the UV-B treatment to a higher extent in samples from Salinas Grandes (NPQ 0.48) than in Los Gigantes samples (NPQ 0.26). We concluded that site-related characteristics, and in particular different UV-B radiation regimen, had a strong effect on resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus of P. austrosinense to UV-B radiation.Fil: Barták, M.. Eco-Physiological Screening of Different Tomato Genotypes in Response to High Temperatures: A Combined Field-to-Laboratory Approach
High temperatures represent a limitation for growth and development of many crop species. Several studies have demonstrated that the yield reduction of tomato under high temperatures and drought is mainly due to a photosynthetic decline. In this paper, a set of 15 tomato genotypes were screened for tolerance to elevated temperatures by cultivating plants under plastic walk-in tunnels. To assess the potential tolerance of tomato genotypes to high temperatures, measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence, pigments content and leaf functional traits have been carried out together with the evaluation of the final yields. Based on the greenhouse trials, a group of eight putative heat-sensitive and heat-tolerant tomato genotypes was selected for laboratory experiments aimed at investigating the effects of short-term high temperatures treatments in controlled conditions. The chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics were recorded on detached leaves treated for 60 min at 35 °C or at 45 °C. The last treatment significantly affected the photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency (namely maximum PSII quantum efficiency, Fv/Fm, and quantum yield of PSII electron transport, ΦPSII) and the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) in the majority of genotypes. The short-term heat shock treatments also led to significant differences in the shape of the slow Kautsky kinetics and its significant time points (chlorophyll fluorescence levels minimum O, peak P, semi-steady state S, maximum M, terminal steady state T) compared to the control, demonstrating heat shock-induced changes in PSII functionality. Genotypes potentially tolerant to high temperatures have been identified. Our findings support the idea that chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (i.e., ΦPSII or NPQ) and some leaf functional traits may be used as a tool to detect high temperatures-tolerant tomato cultivars

On the incorporation of interval-valued fuzzy sets into the Bousi-Prolog system: declarative semantics, implementation and applications
In this paper we analyse the benefits of incorporating interval-valued fuzzy
sets into the Bousi-Prolog system. A syntax, declarative semantics and im-
plementation for this extension is presented and formalised. We show, by using
potential applications, that fuzzy logic programming frameworks enhanced with
them can correctly work together with lexical resources and ontologies in order
to improve their capabilities for knowledge representation and reasoning
