An 80 pc Long Massive Molecular Filament in the Galactic Mid-Plane
The ubiquity of filaments in star forming regions on a range of scales is
clear, yet their role in the star formation process remains in question. We
suggest that there are distinct classes of filaments which are responsible for
their observed diversity in star-forming regions. An example of a massive
molecular filament in the Galactic mid-plane formed at the intersection of
UV-driven bubbles which displays a coherent velocity structure (< 4 km/s) over
80 pc is presented. We classify such sources as Massive Molecular Filaments
(MMFs; M > 10^4 Msun, length > 10 pc, velocity gradient < 5 km/s) and suggest
that MMFs are just one of the many different classes of filaments discussed in
the literature today. Many MMFs are aligned with the Galactic Plane and may be

Ion Beams in Multi-Species Plasma
Argon and xenon ion velocity distribution functions are measured in Ar-He, Ar-Xe, and Xe-He expanding helicon plasmas to determine if ion beam velocity is enhanced by the presence of lighter ions. Contrary to observations in mixed gas sheath experiments, we find that adding a lighter ion does not increase the ion beam speed. The predominant effect is a reduction of ion beam velocity consistent with increased drag arising from increased gas pressure under all conditions: constant total gas pressure, equal plasma densities of different ions, and very different plasma densities of different ions. These results suggest that the physics responsible for the acceleration of multiple ion species in simple sheaths is not responsible for the ion acceleration observed in expanding helicon plasmas
Spatial Structure of Ion Beams in an Expanding Plasma
We report spatially resolved perpendicular and parallel, to the magnetic field, ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements in an expanding argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs, obtained through laser induced fluorescence (LIF), show an ion beam with v ≈ 8000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of metastable quenching of the beam ions. The parallel ion beam velocity slows in agreement with expectations for the measured parallel electric field. The perpendicular IVDFs show an ion population with a radially outward flow that increases with distance from the plasma axis. Structures aligned to the expanding magnetic field appear in the DC electric field, the electron temperature, and the plasma density in the plasma plume. These measurements demonstrate that at least two-dimensional and perhaps fully three-dimensional models are needed to accurately describe the spontaneous acceleration of ion beams in expanding plasmas
Electron degeneracy and intrinsic magnetic properties of epitaxial Nb:SrTiO thin-films controlled by defects
We report thermoelectric power experiments in e-doped thin films of SrTiO
(STO) which demonstrate that the electronic band degeneracy can be lifted
through defect management during growth. We show that even small amounts of
cationic vacancies, combined with epitaxial stress, produce a homogeneous
tetragonal distortion of the films, resulting in a Kondo-like resistance upturn
at low temperature, large anisotropic magnetoresistance, and non-linear Hall
effect. Ab-initio calculations confirm a different occupation of each band
depending on the degree of tetragonal distortion. The phenomenology reported in
this paper for tetragonally distorted e-doped STO thin films, is similarto that
observed in LaAlO/STO interfaces and magnetic STO quantum wells.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Abusers of Clients of Women\u27s Shelter: Their Socialization and Resources
This is a study of men who abuse women. The respondents were residents of a shelter for battered wives during 1977-1978. The study assesses the effect of the abusers\u27 social resources and socialization experiences on their use of violence against the respondents. Abusers with military experience and criminal records used a greater number of different types of violence against their victims than their counterparts without these socialization experiences, and the relationships are specified by the abusers\u27 socioeconomic resources
Phenotypic variation and sexual dimorphism in anadromous threespine stickleback: Implications for postglacial adaptive radiation
Ancestral properties can influence patterns of evolutionary diversification, but ancestors can rarely be observed directly. We examined variation and sexual dimorphism of morphological traits in an anadromous threespine stickleback population representing the ancestral form for resident postglacial stickleback populations in the area. A combination of traditional and geometric morphometric methods were used to study variation over multiple years in an anadromous population that breeds in Rabbit Slough, Cook Inlet, Alaska. Major armor anomalies were extremely rare but their occurrence at measurable frequencies suggests that significant standing variation for armor phenotypes exists in anadromous populations. Sexual dimorphism was a major source of variation, and most traits differed significantly between sexes, particularly head length, length of the pelvic girdle, and body shape. Consequently, some degree of sexual dimorphism appears to be the ancestral condition for many traits in derived resident freshwater stickleback radiations. Morphological variation among years, especially in body shape, was significant in both sexes, but the magnitude of annual variation was always less than variation due to other factors. Phenotypic means were relatively stable over short time scales. Postglacial stickleback radiations are among the most enlightening cases of adaptive radiation, and our detailed study of variation in an anadromous stickleback population provides crucial insight into a key component of adaptive radiation, the variation on which directional selection acts at the onset of the radiation. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London
Cognitive stimulation therapy for people with dementia in practice: A service evaluation
Introduction
Cognitive stimulation therapy is a well-recognised evidence-based cognitive psychosocial intervention for people with mild to moderate dementia. Despite increased use of the programme, little is known about its implementation in practice.
Method
A service evaluation of care home staff that received cognitive stimulation therapy training was conducted, and on-going support to deliver the programme in practice was provided. Outcome measures collected at baseline and 6 month follow up included sense of competence, learning transfer, dementia knowledge, and approaches to dementia. Attendance records were also collected.
Results
Ten out of 12 care homes attempted to deliver the cognitive stimulation therapy programme after receiving training and support. Overall, a high number of sessions were delivered. In addition, the staff members demonstrated significant improvements in positive approaches to dementia care and sense of competence.
Conclusions
This article reports encouraging findings of training and outreach support with demonstrated improvements in staff outcomes and successful implementation of the cognitive stimulation therapy programme. These results support the current evidence base supporting the use of cognitive stimulation therapy in routine care. This is relevant to occupational therapy as the profession plays a crucial part in the implementation of psychosocial interventions for dementia in practice
Measuring the extent of convective cores in low-mass stars using Kepler data: towards a calibration of core overshooting
Our poor understanding of the boundaries of convective cores generates large
uncertainties on the extent of these cores and thus on stellar ages. Our aim is
to use asteroseismology to consistently measure the extent of convective cores
in a sample of main-sequence stars whose masses lie around the mass-limit for
having a convective core. We first test and validate a seismic diagnostic that
was proposed to probe in a model-dependent way the extent of convective cores
using the so-called ratios, which are built with and
modes. We apply this procedure to 24 low-mass stars chosen among Kepler targets
to optimize the efficiency of this diagnostic. For this purpose, we compute
grids of stellar models with both the CESAM2k and MESA evolution codes, where
the extensions of convective cores are modeled either by an instantaneous
mixing or as a diffusion process. Among the selected targets, we are able to
unambiguously detect convective cores in eight stars and we obtain seismic
measurements of the extent of the mixed core in these targets with a good
agreement between the CESAM2k and MESA codes. By performing optimizations using
the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, we then obtain estimates of the amount of
extra-mixing beyond the core that is required in CESAM2k to reproduce seismic
observations for these eight stars and we show that this can be used to propose
a calibration of this quantity. This calibration depends on the prescription
chosen for the extra-mixing, but we find that it should be valid also for the
code MESA, provided the same prescription is used. This study constitutes a
first step towards the calibration of the extension of convective cores in
low-mass stars, which will help reduce the uncertainties on the ages of these

The sine-Gordon model with integrable defects revisited
Application of our algebraic approach to Liouville integrable defects is
proposed for the sine-Gordon model. Integrability of the model is ensured by
the underlying classical r-matrix algebra. The first local integrals of motion
are identified together with the corresponding Lax pairs. Continuity conditions
imposed on the time components of the entailed Lax pairs give rise to the

Frequency dispersion reduction and bond conversion on n-type GaAs by in situ surface oxide removal and passivation
The method of surface preparation on n-type GaAs, even with the presence of an amorphous-Si interfacial passivation layer, is shown to be a critical step in the removal of accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion. In situ deposition and analysis techniques were used to study different surface preparations, including NH4OH, Si-flux, and atomic hydrogen exposures, as well as Si passivation depositions prior to in situ atomic layer deposition of Al2O3. As–O bonding was removed and a bond conversion process with Si deposition is observed. The accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion was removed only when a Si interlayer and a specific surface clean were combined
