    Threshold expansion of massive coloured particle cross sections

    Pair production of massive coloured particles in hadron collisions is accompanied by potentially large radiative corrections related to the suppression of soft gluon emission and enhanced Coulomb exchange near the production threshold. We recently developed a framework to sum both series of corrections for the partonic cross section using soft-collinear and non-relativistic effective theory. If it can be argued that the resummed cross section approximates the complete result over a significant kinematic range, an improvement of the hadronic cross section results, even when the production is not kinematically constrained to the threshold.     Systematic study of high-pTp_T hadron and photon production with the PHENIX experiment

    The suppression of hadrons with large transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) in central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV compared to a binary scaled p+p reference is one of the major discoveries at RHIC. To understand the nature of this suppression PHENIX has performed detailed studies of the energy and system-size dependence of the suppression pattern, including the first RHIC measurement near SPS energies. An additional source of information is provided by direct photons. Since they escape the medium basically unaffected they can provide a high pTp_{\rm T} baseline for hard-scattering processes. An overview of hadron production at high pTp_{\rm T} in different colliding systems and at energies from sNN=22.4−200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 22.4 - 200 GeV will be given.     Jet reconstruction and jet background classification with the ALICE experiment in PbPb collisions at the LHC

    For a quantitative interpretation of reconstructed jet properties in heavy-ion collisions it is paramount to characterize the contribution from the underlying event and the influence of background fluctuations on the jet signal. In addition to the pure number fluctuations, region-to-region correlated background within one event can enhance or deplete locally the level of background and modify the jet energy.     Seven-fluorochrome mouse M-FISH for high-resolution analysis of interchromosomal rearrangements

    The mouse has evolved to be the primary mammalian genetic model organism. Important applications include the modeling of human cancer and cloning experiments. In both settings, a detailed analysis of the mouse genome is essential. Multicolor karyotyping technologies have emerged to be invaluable tools for the identification of mouse chromosomes and for the deciphering of complex rearrangements. With the increasing use of these multicolor technologies resolution limits are critical. However, the traditionally used probe sets, which employ 5 different fluorochromes, have significant limitations. Here, we introduce an improved labeling strategy. Using 7 fluorochromes we increased the sensitivity for the detection of small interchromosomal rearrangements (700 kb or less) to virtually 100%. Our approach should be important to unravel small interchromosomal rearrangements in mouse models for DNA repair defects and chromosomal instability. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel
