Conditions for duality between fluxes and concentrations in biochemical networks
Mathematical and computational modelling of biochemical networks is often
done in terms of either the concentrations of molecular species or the fluxes
of biochemical reactions. When is mathematical modelling from either
perspective equivalent to the other? Mathematical duality translates concepts,
theorems or mathematical structures into other concepts, theorems or
structures, in a one-to-one manner. We present a novel stoichiometric condition
that is necessary and sufficient for duality between unidirectional fluxes and
concentrations. Our numerical experiments, with computational models derived
from a range of genome-scale biochemical networks, suggest that this
flux-concentration duality is a pervasive property of biochemical networks. We
also provide a combinatorial characterisation that is sufficient to ensure
flux-concentration duality. That is, for every two disjoint sets of molecular
species, there is at least one reaction complex that involves species from only
one of the two sets. When unidirectional fluxes and molecular species
concentrations are dual vectors, this implies that the behaviour of the
corresponding biochemical network can be described entirely in terms of either
concentrations or unidirectional fluxes
Damage modelling of fibre reinforced polymer matrix composite open hole tension specimens using the Ladevèze damage model in Pam-CRASH
non-peer-reviewedThe goal of this project was to accurately predict the ultimate failure strengths of fibre
reinforced polymer matrix composite open hole tension specimens using the Ladevèze
continuum mechanics damage model, currently available within the ESI Group Pam-CRASH
software, using input parameters experimentally derived at the University of Limerick.
This report presents the work carried out at the University of Limerick, both experimental and
numerical, as part of the project. Results of an experimental test series carried out to derive
Ladevèze damage model parameters for a carbon fibre reinforced polymer matrix composite
are presented and discussed. In addition, the results of a numerical study carried out to
calibrate the Ladevèze damage model, used to predict the ultimate strength of fibre reinforced
open hole tension specimens are presented and discussed.
Section 2 presents the procedures used and results of an experimental test series to derive
Ladevèze damage model parameters. Section 3 presents the numerical work carried out at the
University of Limerick as part of this project

Flood Mapping of Recent Major Hurricane Events with Synthetic Aperture Radar, Commercial Imaging, and Aerial Observations
Floodwater mapping is an important remote sensing process that is used for disaster response, recovery, and damage assessment practices. Developing a system to read in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and perform land cover classification will allow for the production of near real-time inundation mapping, enabling government and emergency response entities to get a preliminary idea of the situation. SAR is a unique remote sensing tool. Data in this project was obtained by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratorys Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle SAR (UAVSAR), an L-band radar mounted to a Gulfstream III jet. Data collected by UAVSAR is similar to what will be available from the NASA-Indian Space Research Organization (NISAR) mission starting in early 2022. Using Python and ArcGIS applications, a model was developed using training samples taken from NOAA post-event aerial photography and UAVSAR data gathered in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence in September 2018
New collections of p-subgroups and homology decompositions for classifying spaces of finite groups
Let G be a finite group and p a prime dividing its order. We define new
collections of p-subgroups of G. We study the homotopy relations among them and
with the standard collections of p-subgroups. We determine their ampleness and
sharpness properties.Comment: 14 pages, some revisions made, final version to appear in

Modularity of Convergence and Strong Convergence in Infinitary Rewriting
Properties of Term Rewriting Systems are called modular iff they are
preserved under (and reflected by) disjoint union, i.e. when combining two Term
Rewriting Systems with disjoint signatures. Convergence is the property of
Infinitary Term Rewriting Systems that all reduction sequences converge to a
limit. Strong Convergence requires in addition that redex positions in a
reduction sequence move arbitrarily deep. In this paper it is shown that both
Convergence and Strong Convergence are modular properties of non-collapsing
Infinitary Term Rewriting Systems, provided (for convergence) that the term
metrics are granular. This generalises known modularity results beyond metric

CrY2H-seq: a massively multiplexed assay for deep-coverage interactome mapping.
Broad-scale protein-protein interaction mapping is a major challenge given the cost, time, and sensitivity constraints of existing technologies. Here, we present a massively multiplexed yeast two-hybrid method, CrY2H-seq, which uses a Cre recombinase interaction reporter to intracellularly fuse the coding sequences of two interacting proteins and next-generation DNA sequencing to identify these interactions en masse. We applied CrY2H-seq to investigate sparsely annotated Arabidopsis thaliana transcription factors interactions. By performing ten independent screens testing a total of 36 million binary interaction combinations, and uncovering a network of 8,577 interactions among 1,453 transcription factors, we demonstrate CrY2H-seq's improved screening capacity, efficiency, and sensitivity over those of existing technologies. The deep-coverage network resource we call AtTFIN-1 recapitulates one-third of previously reported interactions derived from diverse methods, expands the number of known plant transcription factor interactions by three-fold, and reveals previously unknown family-specific interaction module associations with plant reproductive development, root architecture, and circadian coordination
