Métodos para o controle de placa em idosos: uma revisão integrativa

Odontologia.Este trabalho se constitui de uma revisão integrativa da literatura científica, que teve como objetivo identificar as estratégias de controle de placa que melhoram os índices de placa em idosos. Para isso, foram coletados dados nas seguintes bases: Cochrane Trials, Google Scholar, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus e Web of Science. Também foram checadas as referências dos artigos selecionados. A busca inicial resultou em 2537 artigos, sendo 2151 artigos após remoção das duplicatas. Em seguida, foi realizada a leitura dos títulos e resumos, aos quais foram aplicados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão; se obtiveram 40 artigos para realização da leitura completa. Por fim, 22 artigos se adequavam ao objetivo do trabalho. Os resultados foram divididos em categorias de análise: Métodos Exclusivamente Mecânicos (4 artigos); Métodos Exclusivamente Químicos (10 artigos), Métodos Mecânicos e Químicos Combinados (1 artigo) e Intervenções Educativas (combinadas ou não com método mecânico e/ou químico, 7 artigos). A maioria dos estudos trouxe uma intervenção que resultou em melhora dos índices de placa. Por outro lado, de forma geral, os métodos de controle de placa quando utilizados isoladamente e sem reforço da intervenção, após um período de tempo, não apresentam resultados tão satisfatórios quanto se usados em combinação ou com reforço, em especial aqueles que traziam intervenções educativas. Ainda que muitas intervenções tenham seus resultados bem evidenciados na literatura, são necessários mais estudos que avaliem as combinações dos métodos de controle de placa existentes e seus efeitos após períodos de tempo maiores em idosos, considerando as particularidades existentes no cuidado à saúde bucal desses indivíduos.This work consists of an integrative review of the scientific literature, which aimed to identify the plaque control strategies that improve dental plaque indices in the elderly. For this, data were collected on the following bases: Cochrane Trials, Google Scholar, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. The references of the selected articles were also checked. The initial search resulted in 2537 articles, being 2151 after the removal of the duplicates. Then, the titles and abstracts were read, and the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. After that, 40 articles were obtained for the complete reading. Finally, 22 articles that were adequate for the purpose of the study were found. The results were divided into: Exclusively Mechanical Methods (4 articles); Exclusively Chemical Methods (10 articles), Combined Chemical and Combined Methods (1 article) and Educational Interventions (combined or not with mechanical and / or chemical method, 7 articles). Most of the articles brought an intervention that resulted in improvement of plaque indices. On the other hand, in general, plaque control methods when used alone and without reinforcement of the intervention after a period of time do not present as satisfactory results as when used in combination or with reinforcement, especially those that brought educational interventions. Although many interventions have their results well evidenced in the literature, further studies are needed to evaluate the combinations of existing plaque control methods and their effects after longer periods of time in the elderly, considering the particularities in the care of these individuals
