    A spectroscopic analysis of a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We revisited the spectroscopic characteristics of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) by analysing a homogeneous sample of 296 NLS1s at redshift between 0.028 and 0.345, extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7) public archive. We confirm that NLS1s are mostly characterized by Balmer lines with Lorentzian profiles, lower black hole masses and higher Eddington ratios than classic broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1s), but they also appear to be active galactic nuclei (AGNs) contiguous with BLS1s and sharing with them common properties. Strong Fe II emission does not seem to be a distinctive property of NLS1s, as low values of Fe II/Hβ\beta are equally observed in these AGNs. Our data indicate that Fe II and Ca II kinematics are consistent with the one of Hβ\beta. On the contrary, O I λ\lambda8446 seems to be systematically narrower and it is likely emitted by gas of the broad-line region more distant from the ionizing source and showing different physical properties. Finally, almost all NLS1s of our sample show radial motions of the narrow-line region highly-ionised gas. The mechanism responsible for this effect is not yet clear, but there are hints that very fast outflows require high continuum luminosities (> 104410^{44} erg/s) or high Eddington ratios (log(Lbol_{\rm bol}/LEdd_{\rm Edd}) > -0.1).Comment: 27 pages, 31 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    [O III] line properties in two samples of radio-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies

    The [O III] λλ\lambda\lambda 4959,5007 lines are a useful proxy to test the kinematic of the narrow-line region (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). In AGN, and particularly in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) these lines often show few peculiar features, such as blue wings, often interpreted as outflowing component, and a shift −- typically toward lower wavelengths −- of the whole spectroscopic feature in some exceptional sources, the so-called blue outliers, which are often associated to strong winds. We investigated the incidence of these peculiarities in two samples of radio-emitting NLS1s, one radio-loud and one radio-quiet. We also studied a few correlations between the observational properties of the [O III] lines and those of the AGN. Our aim was to understand the difference between radio-quiet and radio-loud NLS1s, which may in turn provide useful information on the jet formation mechanism. We find that the NLR gas is much more perturbed in radio-loud than in radio-quiet NLS1s. In particular the NLR dynamics in γ\gamma-ray emitting NLS1s appears to be highly disturbed, and this might be a consequence of interaction with the relativistic jet. The less frequently perturbed NLR in radio-quiet NLS1s suggests instead that these sources likely do not harbor a fully developed relativistic jet.     X-Ray Grating Observations of Recurrent Nova T Pyxidis During The 2011 Outburst

    The recurrent nova T Pyx was observed with the X-ray gratings of Chandra and XMM-Newton, 210 and 235 days, respectively, after the discovery of the 2011 April 14 outburst. The X-ray spectra show prominent emission lines of C, N, and O, with broadening corresponding to a full width at half maximum of ~2000-3000 km/s, and line ratios consistent with high-density plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium. On day 210 we also measured soft X-ray continuum emission that appears to be consistent with a white dwarf (WD) atmosphere at a temperature ~420,000 K, partially obscured by anisotropic, optically thick ejecta. The X-ray continuum emission is modulated with the photometric and spectroscopic period observed in quiescence. The continuum at day 235 indicated a WD atmosphere at a consistent effective temperature of 25 days earlier, but with a lower flux. The effective temperature indicates a mass of ~1 solar mass. The conclusion of partial WD obscuration is supported by the complex geometry of non-spherically-symmetric ejecta confirmed in recent optical spectra obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in November and December of 2012. These spectra exhibited prominent [O III] nebular lines with velocity structures typical of bipolar ejecta.Comment: Accepted to ApJ 2013 October 23, 14 pages, 9 figures, 3 table

    Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are active galactic nuclei (AGN) recently identified as a new class of γ\gamma-ray sources. The high energy emission is explained by the presence of a relativistic jet observed at small angles, just like in the case of blazars. When the latter are observed at larger angles they appear as radio-galaxies, but an analogue parent population for beamed NLS1s has not yet been determined. In this work we analyze this problem by studying the physical properties of three different samples of parent sources candidates: steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s, radio-quiet NLS1s, and disk-hosted radio-galaxies, along with compact steep-spectrum sources. In our approach, we first derived black hole mass and Eddington ratio from the optical spectra, then we investigated the interaction between the jet and the narrow-line region from the [O III] λλ\lambda\lambda4959,5007 lines. Finally, the radio luminosity function allowed us to compare their jet luminosity and hence determine the relations between the samples.Comment: 6 pages, no figures.     Dorado and its member galaxies. Ha imaging of the group backbone

    ABRIDGED: Dorado is a nearby, rich and clumpy galaxy group that extends for several degrees in the Southern Hemisphere. For the first time, we map the Ha distribution as a possible indicator of star formation (SF) activity of Dorado members a large fraction of which show interaction and merging signatures. With the 2.5m du Pont and the 1m Swope telescopes we obtained narrow-band, calibrated images of 14 galaxies, forming the backbone of the group, mapping Ha+[N II] down to few 10−17^{-17} erg~cm−2^{-2}~s−1^{-1}~arcsec−2^{-2}. We estimated the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) from the Ha fluxes, corrected for Galaxy foreground extinction and [N II] contamination. Ha+[N II] emission has been detected in all galaxies. HII regions clearly emerge in late-type galaxies (LTGs) , while in early-type galaxies (ETGs) the Ha+[N II] emission is dominated by [N II], especially in the central regions. However, HII complexes are also revealed in four ETGs. Considering the Dorado group as a whole, we notice that the Ha+[N II] equivalent width, a measure of the specific SF, increases with the morphological type, from early to late-type members, although it remains lower that what observed in similar surveys of spiral galaxies. The SFR of the spiral members is in the range of what observed in similar galaxies surveys James+ (2004), although, in three spirals the SFR is well below the median for their morphological classes. The SFR of some early-type members tends, at odds, to be higher than the average derived from Ha+[N II] surveys of this morphological family. We detected in Ha+[N II] all the ETGs observed and half of them show HII regions. These findings suggest that ETGs in this group are not dead galaxies: their SF has not shut down yet. Mechanisms such as gas stripping and gas accretion, through galaxy-galaxy interaction, seem relevant in modifying the SF in this evolutionary phase of Dorado.Comment: 21 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysic

    The high burden of hospitalizations for primary EBV infection: a 6-year prospective survey in a French hospital

    AbstractPrimary Epstein-Barr virus infection (PEI) is acquired increasingly later in life in developed countries, involving a growing number of adults. No studies have examined the effect of age on PEI. We conducted a prospective, single-centre, noninterventional survey to assess the clinical and economic effects of PEI care according to age. We included all serology-confirmed cases observed in all departments of a large regional hospital. Clinical and biologic data, therapeutics and costs of care were examined. Over a 6-year period, we included 292 subjects (148 children and 144 adults) with a median age of 15.4 years (range 9 months to 79 years). Adults were hospitalized more often (83% vs. 60%) and for longer periods of time (median 4 days vs. 2 days) than children (p ≤ 0.0001 for both). Two adults required a secondary transfer into the intensive care unit, although no children did. Typically, adults showed higher levels of activated lymphocytes and liver abnormalities. They also required the use of systemic corticosteroids more often (45% vs. 23%, p < 0.0001) and for longer periods of time (median 7 days vs. 3 days, p 0.02) than children. Overall, the costs were significantly higher for adults than for children (median, €1940 vs. €1130, p < 0.0001), mainly because of the frequency and duration of hospitalizations. Age increases the immune response and clinical severity of PEI, resulting in substantial additional costs for the community. Better recognition of the disease in adults could shorten the average length of hospital stay

    We present work in progress on an intelligent embodied conversation agent in the basic care and healthcare domain. In contrast to most of the existing agents, the presented agent is aimed to have linguistic cultural, social and emotional competence needed to interact with elderly and migrants. It is composed of an ontology-based and reasoning-driven dialogue manager, multimodal communication analysis and generation modules and a search engine for the retrieval of multimedia background content from the web needed for conducting a conversation on a given topic.The presented work is funded by the European Commission under the contract number H2020-645012-RIA
