User requirement elicitation for cross-language information retrieval
Who are the users of a cross-language retrieval system? Under what circumstances do they need to perform such multi-language searches? How will the task and the context
of use affect successful interaction with the system? Answers to these questions were explored in a user study performed as part of the design stages of Clarity, a EU
founded project on cross-language information retrieval. The findings resulted in a rethink of the planned user interface and a consequent expansion of the set of services
offered. This paper reports on the methodology and techniques used for the elicitation of user requirements as well as how these were in turn transformed into new design
solutions

techniques used for the elicitation of user requirements and how these requirements informed the first phase of the user interface design for a Cross-Language Information Retrieval System. We describe a set of factors involved in analysis of the data collected and, finally discuss the implications for user interface design based on the findings
Which User Interaction for Cross-Language Information Retrieval? Design Issues and Reflections
A novel and complex form of information access is cross-language information retrieval: searching for texts written in foreign languages based on native language queries. Although the underlying technology for achieving such a search is relatively well understood, the appropriate interface design is not. This paper presents three user evaluations undertaken during the iterative design of Clarity, a cross-language retrieval system for rare languages, and shows how the user interaction design evolved depending on the results of usability tests. The first test was instrumental to identify weaknesses in both functionalities and interface; the second was run to determine if query translation should be shown or not; the final was a global assessment and focussed on user satisfaction criteria. Lessons were learned at every stage of the process leading to a much more informed view of what a cross-language retrieval system should offer to users
Is query translation a distinct task from search?
INTRODUCTION
The University of Sheffield participated in iCLEF 2002 using, as a test-bed, the prototype under
development in the Clarity project. Clarity is an EU funded project aimed at developing a system for
cross-language information retrieval for so-called low density languages, those with few translation
resources. Currently translation between English and Finnish is supported; soon Swedish will be added
and in the near future Latvian and Lithuanian.
Clarity is being developed in a user-centred way with user involvement from the beginning. The design
of the first user interface was based on current best practise, particular attention was paid to empirical
evidence for a specific design choice. Six paper-based interface mock-ups representing important
points in the cross-language search task were generated and presented for user assessment as a part of
an extensive user study. The study (reported in Petrelli et al. 2002) was conducted to understand users
and uses of cross-language information retrieval systems. Many different techniques were applied:
contextual enquiry, interviews, questionnaires, informal evaluation of existing cross-language
technology, and participatory design sessions with the interface mock-ups mentioned above. As a
result, a user class profile was sketched and a long list of user requirements was compiled. As a followup,
a redesign session took place and the new system was designed for users whoknow the language(s) they are searching (polyglots);
• search for writing (journalists, translators business analysts);
• have limited searching skills;
• know the topic in advance or will learn/read on it while searching;
• use many languages in the same search session and often swap between them.
New system features were listed as important and the user interface was redesigned. Considering the
result of the study the new interface allowed the user to dynamically change the language setting from
query to query, hid the query translation and showed the retrieved set as ranked list primary.
Despite the fact that this new design was considered to be more effective, a comparison between the
first layout based on the relevant literature and the new one based on the user study was considered an
important research question. In particular, the choice of hiding the query translation was considered an
important design decision, against the common agreement to allow and support the user in controlling
the system actions. Thus the participation of Sheffield in iCLEF was organized around the idea of
checking if the user should validate the query translation before the search is run or instead if the
system should perform the translation and search in a single step without any user’s supervision
LOWER LIMB BIOMECHANICAL ADAPTATIONS TO TOTAL HIP ARTHROPLASTY EXIST DURING SITTING AND STANDING TASKS
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of total hip arthroplasty (THA) on lower limb mechanics during the tasks of sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit. Twenty THA patients and 20 control participants performed three trials of sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit. Three-dimensional (3D) hip, knee and ankle angles were calculated. Forces, moments and powers were obtained with an inverse dynamics approach. THA patients exhibited lower joint forces and moments, as well as lower hip flexion and higher abduction angles, near seat-on and seat-off. These results indicate that THA patients were able to adopt a strategy that allowed them to reduce loading at the operated lower limb joints. Although such a strategy may be desirable given that higher loads can increase friction and accelerate wear of the prosthesis, reduced loading may be an indication of inadequate muscle strength that needs to be addressed
Direct imaging constraints on planet populations detected by microlensing
Results from gravitational microlensing suggested the existence of a large
population of free-floating planetary mass objects. The main conclusion from
this work was partly based on constraints from a direct imaging survey. This
survey determined upper limits for the frequency of stars that harbor giant
exoplanets at large orbital separations. Aims. We want to verify to what extent
upper limits from direct imaging do indeed constrain the microlensing results.
We examine the current derivation of the upper limits used in the microlensing
study and re-analyze the data from the corresponding imaging survey. We focus
on the mass and semi-major axis ranges that are most relevant in context of the
microlensing results. We also consider new results from a recent M-dwarf
imaging survey as these objects are typically the host stars for planets
detected by microlensing. We find that the upper limits currently applied in
context of the microlensing results are probably underestimated. This means
that a larger fraction of stars than assumed may harbor gas giant planets at
larger orbital separations. Also, the way the upper limit is currently used to
estimate the fraction of free-floating objects is not strictly correct. If the
planetary surface density of giant planets around M-dwarfs is described as
df_Planet ~ a^beta da, we find that beta ~ 0.5 - 0.6 is consistent with results
from different observational studies probing semi-major axes between ~0.03 - 30
AU. Having a higher upper limit on the fraction of stars that may have gas
giant planets at orbital separations probed by the microlensing data implies
that more of the planets detected in the microlensing study are potentially
bound to stars rather than free-floating. The current observational data are
consistent with a rising planetary surface density for giant exoplanets around

The Solar Neighborhood. XIX. Discovery and Characterization of 33 New Nearby White Dwarf Systems
We present spectra for 33 previously unclassified white dwarf systems
brighter than V = 17 primarily in the southern hemisphere. Of these new
systems, 26 are DA, 4 are DC, 2 are DZ, and 1 is DQ. We suspect three of these
systems are unresolved double degenerates. We obtained VRI photometry for these
33 objects as well as for 23 known white dwarf systems without trigonometric
parallaxes, also primarily in the southern hemisphere. For the 56 objects, we
converted the photometry values to fluxes and fit them to a spectral energy
distribution using the spectroscopy to determine which model to use (i.e. pure
hydrogen, pure helium, or metal-rich helium), resulting in estimates of
effective temperature and distance. Eight of the new and 12 known systems are
estimated to be within the NStars and Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS) horizons
of 25 pc, constituting a potential 18% increase in the nearby white dwarf
sample. Trigonometric parallax determinations are underway via CTIOPI for these
20 systems.
One of the DCs is cool so that it displays absorption in the near infrared.
Using the distance determined via trigonometric parallax, we are able to
constrain the model-dependent physical parameters and find that this object is
most likely a mixed H/He atmosphere white dwarf similar to other cool white
dwarfs identified in recent years with significant absorption in the infrared
due to collision-induced absorptions by molecular hydrogen.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical

Spinodal decomposition of expanding nuclear matter and multifragmentation
Density fluctuations of expanding nuclear matter are studied within a
mean-field model in which fluctuations are generated by an external stochastic
field. Fluctuations develop about a mean one-body phase-space density
corresponding to a hydrodinamic motion that describes a slow expansion of the
system. A fluctuation-dissipation relation suitable for a uniformly expanding
medium is obtained and used to constrain the strength of the stochastic field.
The distribution of the liquid domains in the spinodal decomposition is
derived. Comparison of the related distribution of the fragment size with
