Planetary companions orbiting M giants HD 208527 and HD 220074
Aims. The purpose of the present study is to research the origin of planetary
companions by using a precise radial velocity (RV) survey.
Methods. The high-resolution spectroscopy of the fiber-fed Bohyunsan
Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy
Observatory (BOAO) is used from September 2008 to June 2012.
Results. We report the detection of two exoplanets in orbit around HD 208527
and HD 220074 exhibiting periodic variations in RV of 875.5 +/- 5.8 and 672.1
+/- 3.7 days. The RV variations are not apparently related to the surface
inhomogeneities and a Keplerian motion of the planetary companion is the most
likely explanation. Assuming possible stellar masses of 1.6 +/- 0.4 and 1.2 +/-
0.3 M_Sun, we obtain the minimum masses for the exoplanets of 9.9 +/- 1.7 and
11.1 +/- 1.8 M_Jup around HD 208527 and HD 220074 with an orbital semi-major
axis of 2.1 +/- 0.2 and 1.6 +/- 0.1 AU and an eccentricity of 0.08 and 0.14,
respectively. We also find that the previously known spectral classification of
HD 208527 and HD 220074 was in error: Our new estimation of stellar parameters
suggest that both HD 208527 and HD 220074 are M giants. Therefore, HD 208527
and HD 220074 are so far the first candidate M giants to harbor a planetary
companion.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publisation in Astronomy &

Detection of an exoplanet around the evolved K giant HD 66141
Aims. We have been carrying out a precise radial velocity (RV) survey for K
giants to search for and study the origin of the lowamplitude and long-periodic
RV variations.
Methods. We present high-resolution RV measurements of the K2 giant HD 66141
from December 2003 to January 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory
Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO).
Results. We find that the RV measurements for HD 66141 exhibit a periodic
variation of 480.5 +/- 0.5 days with a semi-amplitude of 146.2 +/- 2.7 m/s. The
Hipparcos photometry and bisector velocity span (BVS) do not show any obvious
correlations with RV variations. We find indeed 706.4 +/- 35.0 day variations
in equivalent width (EW) measurements of H_alpha line and 703.0 +/- 39.4 day
variations in a space-born measurements 1.25{\mu} flux of HD 66141 measured
during COBE/DIRBE experiment. We reveal that a mean value of long-period
variations is about 705 +/- 53 days and the origin is a rotation period of the
star and variability that is caused by surface inhomogeneities. For the 480 day
periods of RV variations an orbital motion is the most likely explanation.
Assuming a stellar mass of 1.1 +/- 0.1 M_Sun? for HD 66141, we obtain a minimum
mass for the planetary companion of 6.0 +/- 0.3 M_Jup with an orbital
semi-major axis of 1.2 +/- 0.1 AU and an eccentricity of 0.07 +/- 0.03.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publisation in Astronomy

Low-amplitude and long-period radial velocity variations in giants HD 3574, 63 Cygni, and HD 216946 (Research Note)
Aims. We study the low-amplitude and long-period variations in evolved stars
using precise radial velocity measurements. Methods. The high-resolution,
fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) was used from
September 2004 to May 2014 as part of the exoplanet search program at the
Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). Results. We report the
detection of low-amplitude and long-period orbital radial velocity variations
in three evolved stars, HD 3574, 63 Cyg, and HD 216946. They have periods of
1061, 982, and 1382 days and semi-amplitudes of 376, 742, and 699 m/s,
respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publisation in Astronomy &

Collective quantum jumps of Rydberg atoms
We study an open quantum system of atoms with long-range Rydberg interaction,
laser driving, and spontaneous emission. Over time, the system occasionally
jumps between a state of low Rydberg population and a state of high Rydberg
population. The jumps are inherently collective and in fact exist only for a
large number of atoms. We explain how entanglement and quantum measurement
enable the jumps, which are otherwise classically forbidden.Comment: 4 page
A general circulation model ensemble study of the atmospheric circulation of Venus
The response of three numerical model dynamical cores to Venus-like forcing and friction is described in this paper. Each dynamical core simulates a super-rotating atmospheric circulation with equatorial winds of 35 ± 10 m/s, maintained by horizontally propagating eddies leaving the equatorial region and inducing a momentum convergence there. We discuss the balance between the mean circulation and eddies with reference to the production of a super-rotating equatorial flow. The balance between the horizontal eddies and vertical eddies in the polar region is discussed and shown to produce an indirect overturning circulation above the jet. The indirect overturning may be related to the observed region of the polar dipole in the Venus atmosphere. Reservoirs of energy and momentum are calculated for each dynamical core and explicit sources and sinks are diagnosed from the general circulation model (GCM). The effect of a strong “sponge layer” damping to rest is compared with eddy damping and found to change significantly the momentum balance within the top “sponge layer” but does not significantly affect the super-rotation of the bulk of the atmosphere. The Lorenz (1955) energy cycle is calculated and the circulation is shown to be dominated by energy conversion between the mean potential energy and mean kinetic energy reservoirs, with barotropic energy conversion between the mean kinetic energy and eddy kinetic energy reservoirs. We suggest modifications to the GCM parameterizations on the basis of our analysis of the atmospheric circulation and discuss the effect of numerical parameterizations on the simulated atmosphere
Possible effects of charge frustration in NaCoO: bandwidth suppression, charge orders and resurrected RVB superconductivity
Charge frustration due to further neighbor Coulomb repulsion can have
dramatic effects on the electronic properties of NaCoO in the full
doping range. It can significantly reduce the effective mobility of the charge
carriers, leading to a low degeneracy temperature . Such
strongly renormalized Fermi liquid has rather unusual properties--from the
point of view of the ordinary metals with --but similar to
the properties that are actually observed in the NaCoO system. For
example, we show that the anomalous thermopower and Hall effect observed in
NaCoO may be interpreted along these lines. If the repulsion is
strong, it can also lead to charge order; nevertheless, away from the
commensurate dopings, the configurational constraints allow some mobility for
the charge carriers, i.e., there remains some ``metallic'' component. Finally,
the particularly strong bandwidth suppression around the commensurate
can help resurrect the RVB superconductivity, which would otherwise not be
expected near this high doping. These suggestions are demonstrated specifically
for a -like model with an additional nearest neighbor repulsion.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figure
Observation of vortices and hidden pseudogap from scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of electron-doped cuprate superconductor
We present the first demonstration of vortices in an electron-type cuprate
superconductor, the highest (= 43 K) electron-type cuprate
. Our spatially resolved quasiparticle tunneling spectra
reveal a hidden low-energy pseudogap inside the vortex core and unconventional
spectral evolution with temperature and magnetic field. These results cannot be
easily explained by the scenario of pure superconductivity in the ground state
of high- superconductivity.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Two new graphs have been added into Figure 2.

Magnetic Ordering in V-Layers of the Superconducting System of Sr2VFeAsO3
Results of transport, magnetic, thermal, and 75As-NMR measurements are
presented for superconducting Sr2VFeAsO3 with an alternating stack of FeAs and
perovskite-like block layers. Although apparent anomalies in magnetic and
thermal properties have been observed at ~150 K, no anomaly in transport
behaviors has been observed at around the same temperature. These results
indicate that V ions in the Sr2VO3-block layers have localized magnetic moments
and that V-electrons do not contribute to the Fermi surface. The electronic
characteristics of Sr2VFeAsO3 are considered to be common to those of other
superconducting systems with Fe-pnictogen layers.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, To appear in JPSJ 79 (2010) 12371
Efficient computation of matched solutions of the Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij envelope equations for periodic focusing lattices
A new iterative method is developed to numerically calculate the periodic,
matched beam envelope solution of the coupled Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV)
equations describing the transverse evolution of a beam in a periodic, linear
focusing lattice of arbitrary complexity. Implementation of the method is
straightforward. It is highly convergent and can be applied to all usual
parameterizations of the matched envelope solutions. The method is applicable
to all classes of linear focusing lattices without skew couplings, and also
applies to all physically achievable system parameters -- including where the
matched beam envelope is strongly unstable. Example applications are presented
for periodic solenoidal and quadrupole focusing lattices. Convergence
properties are summarized over a wide range of system parameters.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, Mathematica source code provide
