Alignment issues in photonic crystal device fabrication

    Get PDF
An important requirement in the fabrication of photonic crystal structures is the correct relative alignment of structural elements. Accuracy should be in the order of some tens of nanometres. Some of the options for providing such accuracy are discussed. Examples are given of aligning defects with respect to a predefined 2D lattice, aligning access waveguides with respect to a small local photonic crystal structure, and the alignment of successive periodically structured layers in a 3D "woodpile" structure

Objective: The current work is intended towards the development of a novel, simple, and precise UV spectrophotometric method for the estimation of teriflunomide (TEF) present in the marketed formulation. Methods: Acetonitrile was used as asolvent and the absorbance of the drug was measured at the absorbance maxima of TEF, UV 284 nm. Results: Calibration curve plotted in concentration range 5-10 µg /ml exhibited excellent linear relationship with line equation y = 0.0858x-0.0223 and r2 value of 0.9996. The method was found to comply all the validation parameters as per the ICH guideline indicating the sensitivity of the method towards analyte. Conclusion: The method can be used satisfactorily for the routine analysis of TEF present in marketed formulation

Early Detection of Idiopathic Scoliosis in Adolescents

    Get PDF
The early detection of idiopathic scoliosis has been advocated since the 1950s and ’60s, concurrent with the development in the modern era of ambulatory spinal orthoses to treat scoliosis in adolescents. This led to the development of screening programs for specific populations, as evidenced by school screening programs in the United States and public health systems in Europe and Asia. Over time, the value of population screening in terms of optimal health care and economics has been debated in the popular press, by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and by professional societies. Recent studies on the effectiveness of bracing to prevent the progression of scoliosis, improved delineation of “at-risk populations,” and refined orthotic management programs with emphasis on the use of compliance monitors have influenced the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to update their position on screening for scoliosis and has led to a joint position statement on the topic

Focused Ion Beam Milling Strategies of Photonic Crystal Structures in Silicon

We report on optimisation of the side wall angle of focused ion beam (FIB) fabricated submicron diameter holes in silicon. Two optimisation steps were performed. First, we compare two different FIB scanning procedures and show the advantages of using a spiral scanning method for the definition of holes in photonic crystal slab structures. Secondly, we investigate the effect on the geometry, of parameters for reducing the tapering effect. Furthermore, we report on the initial results regarding effects of Ga+Ga^{+} ion implantation during FIB milling on optical losses, both before and after an annealing step, showing over a decade reduction of optical loss

    Get PDF
Objective: The current work is intended towards the development of a novel, simple and precise high-performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method coupled with a densitometer for the estimation of teriflunomide (TEF) present in the marketed formulation. Methods: The chromatographic development was performed on aluminum plates coated with silica gel 60 F254 using toluene: ethyl acetate: glacial acetic acid (7.5:2: 0.5 v/v/v) as the mobile phase. Densitometric scanning was achieved at the absorbance maxima, UV 284 nm. Results: Well separated band was observed with Rf value 0.46. The calibration curve plotted in the concentration range 100-700ng/band exhibited an excellent linear relationship with the r2 value of 0.9928. The method was found to comply with all the validation parameters as per the ICH guidelines. Conclusion: The method ensures minimal use of mobile phase with minimal run time compared to other reported analytical methods. This validated method can be used by quality control laboratories for the routine quantitative analysis of tablets consisting of Teriflunomide

Realization of 2-dimensional air-bridge silicon photonic crystals by focused ion beam milling and nanopolishing

We report the design and fabrication of small photonic crystal structures which are combined with conventional dielectric ridge waveguides. We describe in details the fabrication of both rough and smooth membranes, which are used as host for photonic crystals. Two Focused Ion Beam milling experiments are highlighted: the first one shows how photonic crystals can be fast and accurate milled into a Si membrane, whereas the second experiment demonstrates how focused ion beam milling can turn a rough surface into a well-patterned nano-smooth surface. The previously ultra rough surface showed no detectable roughness after milling due to the nanopolishing effect of the focused ion beam milling

Prospective study of surgical management of femoral shaft fractures in children using tens nail

    Get PDF
Background: Pediatric femoral shaft fractures are uncommon, constituting less than 2% of all fractures in children; yet they are a significant burden on healthcare systems and families as they are the most common fractures requiring hospitalization in children. In the recent studies, technique of flexible stable intra medullary pinning using titanium pins which is now popularly known as TENS has become the choice of operative management for pediatric femoral shaft fractures. We conducted a clinical prospective study on the use of Titanium Elastic Nailing System (TENS) for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures in children. Methods: This prospective study was carried out at Al-Ameen Medical College and Hospital, Vijayapura. Forty patients (32 males and 8 females) aged between 5-15 years with diaphyseal femur fracture were included in our study. Patients were treated with closed reduction and internal fixation with TENS. They were followed up for 6 months both clinically and radiologically. The functional outcome was evaluated using Flynn’s scoring criteria. Results: Forty patients were followed up for 6 months and their results were evaluated. The functional outcome using Flynn’s criteria was excellent in 24 patients, satisfactory in 14 patients and poor in 2 patients. Complications observed were limb length discrepancy, knee stiffness, superficial infection and nail protrusion. Conclusions: TENS has the advantages of early union, early mobilization, and manageable complications, making it an excellent choice for treating paediatric shaft femur fractures in patients aged 5 to 15 years

Resolving Star Formation on Sub-Kiloparsec Scales in the High-Redshift Galaxy SDP.11 Using Gravitational Lensing

We investigate the properties of the interstellar medium, star formation, and the current-day stellar population in the strongly-lensed star-forming galaxy H-ATLAS J091043.1-000321 (SDP.11), at z = 1.7830, using new Herschel and ALMA observations of far-infrared fine-structure lines of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. We report detections of the [O III] 52 um, [N III] 57 um, and [O I] 63 um lines from Herschel/PACS, and present high-resolution imaging of the [C II] 158 um line, and underlying continuum, using ALMA. We resolve the [C II] line emission into two spatially-offset Einstein rings, tracing the red- and blue-velocity components of the line, in the ALMA/Band-9 observations at 0.2" resolution. The values seen in the [C II]/FIR ratio map, as low as ~ 0.02% at the peak of the dust continuum, are similar to those of local ULIRGs, suggesting an intense starburst in this source. This is consistent with the high intrinsic FIR luminosity (~ 3 x 10^12 Lo), ~ 16 Myr gas depletion timescale, and < 8 Myr timescale since the last starburst episode, estimated from the hardness of the UV radiation field. By applying gravitational lensing models to the visibilities in the uv-plane, we find that the lensing magnification factor varies by a factor of two across SDP.11, affecting the observed line profiles. After correcting for the effects of differential lensing, a symmetric line profile is recovered, suggesting that the starburst present here may not be the result of a major merger, as is the case for local ULIRGs, but instead could be powered by star-formation activity spread across a 3-5 kpc rotating disk.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
