    This paper reports a measurement of the W +b-jets (W +b+ X and W +bb+X) production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. These results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector. Cross-sections are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading b-jet for both the muon and electron decay modes of the W boson. The W +b-jets cross-section, corrected for all known detector effects, is quoted in a limited kinematic range. Combining the muon and electron channels, the fiducial cross-section for W +b-jets is measured to be 7.1 ± 0.5 (stat) ± 1.4 (syst) pb, consistent with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction, corrected for non-perturbative and double-parton interactions (DPI) contributions, of 4.70 ± 0.09 (stat) +0.60−0.49 (scale) ±0.06 (PDF) ±0.16 (non-pert) +0.52−0.38 (DPI) pb

    Measurements of Wγ and Zγ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The integrated and differential fiducial cross sections for the production of a W or Z boson in association with a high-energy photon are measured using pp collisions at √s = 7  TeV. The analyses use a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 4.6  fb−1 collected by the ATLAS detector during the 2011 LHC data-taking period. Events are selected using leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons [W(eν,μν) and Z(e+e−, μ+μ−, νν)] with the requirement of an associated isolated photon. The data are used to test the electroweak sector of the Standard Model and search for evidence for new phenomena. The measurements are used to probe the anomalous WWγ, ZZγ, and Zγγ triple-gauge-boson couplings and to search for the production of vector resonances decaying to Zγ and Wγ. No deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed and limits are placed on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings and on the production of new vector meson resonances

    Measurement of angular correlations in Drell-Yan lepton pairs to probe Z/ γ* boson transverse momentum at √s= 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A measurement of angular correlations in Drell-Yan lepton pairs via the ϕη* observable is presented. This variable probes the same physics as the Z/γ* boson transverse momentum with a better experimental resolution. The Z/γ*→e+e and Z/γ*→μ+μ− decays produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=7 TeV are used. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1. Normalised differential cross sections as a function of ϕη* are measured separately for electron and muon decay channels. These channels are then combined for improved accuracy. The cross section is also measured double differentially as a function of ϕη* for three independent bins of the Z boson rapidity. The results are compared to QCD calculations and to predictions from different Monte Carlo event generators. The data are reasonably well described, in all measured Z boson rapidity regions, by resummed QCD predictions combined with fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations or by some Monte Carlo event generators. The measurement precision is typically better by one order of magnitude than present theoretical uncertainties

    Search for the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is reported. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were recorded in 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 to 4.8 fb−1. Higgs boson decays into oppositely-charged muon or τ lepton pairs are considered for final states requiring either the presence or absence of b-jets. No statistically significant excess over the expected background is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived. The exclusion limits are for the production cross-section of a generic neutral Higgs boson, ϕ, as a function of the Higgs boson mass and for h/A/H production in the MSSM as a function of the parameters mA and tanβ in the mmaxh scenario for mA in the range of 90 GeV to 500 GeV

    Search for contact interactions and large extra dimensions in dilepton events from pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for nonresonant new phenomena, originating from either contact interactions or large extra spatial dimensions, has been carried out using events with two isolated electrons or muons. These events, produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at √s=7  TeV, were recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data sample, collected throughout 2011, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 and 5.0  fb−1 in the e+e− and μ+μ− channels, respectively. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Using a Bayesian approach, 95% confidence level lower limits ranging from 9.0 to 13.9 TeV are placed on the energy scale of ℓℓqq contact interactions in the left-left isoscalar model. Lower limits ranging from 2.4 to 3.9 TeV are also set on the string scale in large extra dimension models. After combining these limits with results from a similar search in the diphoton channel, slightly more stringent limits are obtained

    Measurement of the W+W- production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector and limits on anomalous WWZ and WWγ couplings

    This paper presents a measurement of the W+W− production cross section in pp collisions at √s=7  TeV. The leptonic decay channels are analyzed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6  fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The W+W− production cross section σ(pp→W+W−+X) is measured to be 51.9±2.0(stat)±3.9(syst)±2.0(lumi)  pb, compatible with the Standard Model prediction of 44.7+2.1−1.9  pb. A measurement of the normalized fiducial cross section as a function of the leading lepton transverse momentum is also presented. The reconstructed transverse momentum distribution of the leading lepton is used to extract limits on anomalous WWZ and WWγ couplings

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of √s = 7 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Searches for heavy long-lived sleptons and R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    A search for long-lived particles is performed using a data sample of 4.7 fb−1 from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No excess is observed above the estimated background and lower limits, at 95% confidence level, are set on the mass of the long-lived particles in different scenarios, based on their possible interactions in the inner detector, the calorimeters and the muon spectrometer. Long-lived staus in gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models are excluded up to a mass of 300 GeV for tanβ = 5-20. Directly produced long-lived sleptons are excluded up to a mass of 278 GeV. R-hadrons, composites of gluino (stop, sbottom) and light quarks, are excluded up to a mass of 985 GeV (683 GeV, 612 GeV) when using a generic interaction model. Additionally two sets of limits on R-hadrons are obtained that are less sensitive to the interaction model for R-hadrons. One set of limits is obtained using only the inner detector and calorimeter observables, and a second set of limits is obtained based on the inner detector alone
