Nurses' preparedness to care for women exposed to Intimate Partner Violence: a quantitative study in primary health care
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Intimate partner violence (IPV) has a deep impact on women's health. Nurses working in primary health care need to be prepared to identify victims and offer appropriate interventions, since IPV is often seen in primary health care. The aim of the study was to assess nurses' preparedness to identify and provide nursing care to women exposed to IPV who attend primary health care.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Data was collected using a questionnaire to nurses at the primary health care centres. The response rate was 69.3%. Logistic regression analysis was used to test relationships among variables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Shortcomings were found regarding preparedness among nurses. They lacked organisational support e.g. guidelines, collaboration with others and knowledge regarding the extensiveness of IPV. Only half of them always asked women about violence and mostly when a woman was physically injured. They felt difficulties to know how to ask and if they identified violence they mostly offered the women a doctor's appointment. Feeling prepared was connected to obtaining knowledge by themselves and also to identifying women exposed to IPV.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The majority of the nurses were found to be quiet unprepared to provide nursing care to women exposed to IPV. Consequences might be treatment of symptoms but unidentified abuse and more and unnecessary suffering for these women. Improvements are needed on both at the level of the organisation and individual.</p
Phase Equilibration and Magnetic Field Generation in U(1) Bubble Collisions
We present the results of lattice computations of collisions of two expanding
bubbles of true vacuum in the Abelian Higgs model with a first-order phase
transition. New time-dependent analytical solutions for the Abelian field
strength and the phase of the complex field are derived from initial conditions
inferred from linear superposition and are shown to be in excellent agreement
with the numerical solutions especially for the case where the initial phase
difference between the bubbles is small. With a step-function approximation for
the initial phase of the complex field, solutions for the Abelian field
strength and other gauge-invariant quantities are obtained in closed form.
Possible extensions of the solution to the case of the electroweak phase
transition and the generation of primordial magnetic fields are briefly

Defect Statistics in the Two Dimensional Complex Ginsburg-Landau Model
The statistical correlations between defects in the two dimensional complex
Ginsburg-Landau model are studied in the defect-coarsening regime. In
particular the defect-velocity probability distribution is determined and has
the same high velocity tail found for the purely dissipative time-dependent
Ginsburg-Landau (TDGL) model. The spiral arms of the defects lead to a very
different behavior for the order parameter correlation function in the scaling
regime compared to the results for the TDGL model.Comment: 24 page
Vortex Dynamics in Dissipative Systems
We derive the exact equation of motion for a vortex in two- and three-
dimensional non-relativistic systems governed by the Ginzburg-Landau equation
with complex coefficients. The velocity is given in terms of local gradients of
the magnitude and phase of the complex field and is exact also for arbitrarily
small inter-vortex distances. The results for vortices in a superfluid or a

Microwave Background Signals from Tangled Magnetic Fields
An inhomogeneous cosmological magnetic field will create Alfven-wave modes
that induce a small rotational velocity perturbation on the last scattering
surface of the microwave background radiation. The Alfven-wave mode survives
Silk damping on much smaller scales than the compressional modes. This, in
combination with its rotational nature, ensures that there will be no sharp
cut-off in anisotropy on arc-minute scales. We estimate that a magnetic field
which redshifts to a present value of Gauss produces
temperature anisotropies at the 10 micro Kelvin level at and below 10 arc-min
scales. A tangled magnetic field, which is large enough to influence the
formation of large scale structure is therefore potentially detectable by

Three-dimensional pattern formation, multiple homogeneous soft modes, and nonlinear dielectric electroconvection
Patterns forming spontaneously in extended, three-dimensional, dissipative
systems are likely to excite several homogeneous soft modes (
hydrodynamic modes) of the underlying physical system, much more than quasi
one- and two-dimensional patterns are. The reason is the lack of damping
boundaries. This paper compares two analytic techniques to derive the patten
dynamics from hydrodynamics, which are usually equivalent but lead to different
results when applied to multiple homogeneous soft modes. Dielectric
electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals is introduced as a model for
three-dimensional pattern formation. The 3D pattern dynamics including soft
modes are derived. For slabs of large but finite thickness the description is
reduced further to a two-dimensional one. It is argued that the range of
validity of 2D descriptions is limited to a very small region above threshold.
The transition from 2D to 3D pattern dynamics is discussed. Experimentally
testable predictions for the stable range of ideal patterns and the electric
Nusselt numbers are made. For most results analytic approximations in terms of

Neutrino Propagation in a Strongly Magnetized Medium
We derive general expressions at the one-loop level for the coefficients of
the covariant structure of the neutrino self-energy in the presence of a
constant magnetic field. The neutrino energy spectrum and index of refraction
are obtained for neutral and charged media in the strong-field limit () using the lowest Landau level
approximation. The results found within the lowest Landau level approximation
are numerically validated, summing in all Landau levels, for strong and weakly-strong fields. The neutrino energy in
leading order of the Fermi coupling constant is expressed as the sum of three
terms: a kinetic-energy term, a term of interaction between the magnetic field
and an induced neutrino magnetic moment, and a rest-energy term. The leading
radiative correction to the kinetic-energy term depends linearly on the
magnetic field strength and is independent of the chemical potential. The other
two terms are only present in a charged medium. For strong and weakly-strong
fields, it is found that the field-dependent correction to the neutrino energy
in a neutral medium is much larger than the thermal one. Possible applications

Watchfully checking rapport with the Primary Child Health Care nurses - a theoretical model from the perspective of parents of foreign origin
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Worldwide, multicultural interaction within health care seems to be challenging and problematic. This is also true among Primary Child Health Care nurses (PCHC nurses) in the Swedish Primary Child Health Care services (PCHC services). Therefore, there was a need to investigate the parents' perspective in-depth.</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>The aim of the study was to construct a theoretical model that could promote further understanding of the variety of experiences of parents of foreign origin regarding their interaction with the PCHC nurses at PCHC services.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>The study used Grounded Theory Methodology. Twenty-one parents of foreign origin in contact with PCHC servicies were interviewed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In our study parents were watchfully checking rapport, i.e. if they could perceive sympathy and understanding from the PCHC nurses. This was done by checking the nurse's demeanour and signs of judgement. From these interviews we created a theoretical model illustrating the interactive process between parents and PCHC nurses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We found it to be of utmost importance for parents to be certain that it was possible to establish rapport with the PCHC nurse. If not, disruptions in the child's attendance at PCHC services could result. PCHC nurses can use the theoretical model resulting from this study as a basis for understanding parents, avoiding a demeanour and judgements that may cause misunderstandings thus promoting high-quality interaction in PCHC services.</p
