The Business Boost from Marriage Equality: Evidence from the Health and Marriage Equality in Massachusetts Survey
This brief draws on two sources of data, a survey and state-collected tax revenue data, and finds that marriages have had a positive economic effect on Massachusetts -- likely providing a boost of over $100 million to the state economy. Same-sex couples' weddings injected significant spending into the Massachusetts economy and brought out-of-state guests to the state, whose spending also added to the economic boost

The Impact on Maine's Budget of Allowing Same-Sex Couples to Marry
This analysis estimates the impact of allowing same-sex couples to marry on Maine's state budget. We estimate that allowing same-sex couples to marry will result in a net gain of approximately 7.9 million
Nutrition in necrotizing enterocolitis and following intestinal resection
This review aims to discuss the role of nutrition and feeding practices in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), NEC prevention, and its complications, including surgical treatment. A thorough PubMed search was performed with a focus on meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials when available. There are several variables in nutrition and the feeding of preterm infants with the intention of preventing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Starting feeds later rather than earlier, advancing feeds slowly and continuous feeds have not been shown to prevent NEC and breast milk remains the only effective prevention strategy. The lack of medical treatment options for NEC often leads to disease progression requiring surgical resection. Following resection, intestinal adaptation occurs, during which villi lengthen and crypts deepen to increase the functional capacity of remaining bowel. The effect of macronutrients on intestinal adaptation has been extensively studied in animal models. Clinically, the length and portion of intestine that is resected may lead to patients requiring parenteral nutrition, which is also reviewed here. There remain significant gaps in knowledge surrounding many of the nutritional aspects of NEC and more research is needed to determine optimal feeding approaches to prevent NEC, particularly in infants younger than 28 weeks and \u3c1000 grams. Additional research is also needed to identify biomarkers reflecting intestinal recovery following NEC diagnosis individualize when feedings should be safely resumed for each patient
Corrosion behaviour of nitrided ferritic stainless steels for use in solid oxide fuel cell devices
Plasma nitriding was applied to ferritic stainless steel substrates to improve their performances as interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell devices. The samples underwent electrical conductivity test and SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, environmental-SEM analyses. The first stages of corrosion were recorded in-situ with the e-SEM. Nitriding is effective in limiting the undesired chromium evaporation from the steel substrates and accelerates the corrosion kinetics, but its influence of the electrical conductivity is ambiguous. No intergranular corrosion is found in the steel substrate after long time operation. Nitriding helps commercially competitive porous coating to improve chromium retention properties of metal interconnects
Move Forward and Tell: A Progressive Generator of Video Descriptions
We present an efficient framework that can generate a coherent paragraph to
describe a given video. Previous works on video captioning usually focus on
video clips. They typically treat an entire video as a whole and generate the
caption conditioned on a single embedding. On the contrary, we consider videos
with rich temporal structures and aim to generate paragraph descriptions that
can preserve the story flow while being coherent and concise. Towards this
goal, we propose a new approach, which produces a descriptive paragraph by
assembling temporally localized descriptions. Given a video, it selects a
sequence of distinctive clips and generates sentences thereon in a coherent
manner. Particularly, the selection of clips and the production of sentences
are done jointly and progressively driven by a recurrent network -- what to
describe next depends on what have been said before. Here, the recurrent
network is learned via self-critical sequence training with both sentence-level
and paragraph-level rewards. On the ActivityNet Captions dataset, our method
demonstrated the capability of generating high-quality paragraph descriptions
for videos. Compared to those by other methods, the descriptions produced by
our method are often more relevant, more coherent, and more concise.Comment: Accepted by ECCV 201
Precision Timing of Two Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars
We report on long-term X-ray timing of two anomalous X-ray pulsars, 1RXS
J170849.0-400910 and 1E 2259+586, using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. In
monthly observations made over 1.4 yr and 2.6 yr for the two pulsars,
respectively, we have obtained phase-coherent timing solutions which imply that
these objects have been rotating with great stability throughout the course of
our observations. For 1RXS J170849.0-400910, we find a rotation frequency of
0.0909169331(5) Hz and frequency derivative -15.687(4) x 10^(-14) Hz/s, for
epoch MJD 51215.931. For 1E 2259+586, we find a rotation frequency of
0.1432880613(2)Hz, and frequency derivative -1.0026(7) x 10^(-14) Hz/s, for
epoch MJD 51195.583. RMS phase residuals from these simple models are only
about 0.01 cycles for both sources. We show that the frequency derivative for
1E 2259+586 is inconsistent with that inferred from incoherent frequency
observations made over the last 20 yr. Our observations are consistent with the
magnetar hypothesis and make binary accretion scenarios appear unlikely.Comment: 12 pages including 3 figures. To appear in ApJ Letter
Volume Rendering with Advanced GPU Scheduling Strategies
Modern GPUs are powerful enough to enable interactive display of high-quality volume data even despite the fact that many volume rendering methods do not present a natural fit for current GPU hardware. However, there still is a vast amount of computational power that remains unused due to the inefficient use of the available hardware. In this work, we demonstrate how advanced scheduling methods can be employed to implement volume rendering algorithms in a way that better utilizes the GPU by example of three different state-of-the-art volume rendering techniques
