    Hodge structures associated to SU(p,1)

Let A be an abelian variety over C such that the semisimple part of the Hodge group of A is a product of copies of SU(p,1) for some p>1. We show that any effective Tate twist of a Hodge structure occurring in the cohomology of A is isomorphic to a Hodge structure in the cohomology of some abelian variety

Friction vs Texture at the Approach of a Granular Avalanche

We perform a novel analysis of the granular texture of a granular bed close to stability limit. Our analysis is based on a unique criterion of friction mobilisation in a simulated two-dimensional packing. In this way, we recover the bimodal character of granular texture, and the coexistence of weak and strong phases in the sense of distinct contacts populations. Moreover, we show the existence of a well-defined subset of contacts within the weak contact network. These contacts are characterized by their important friction, and form a highly coherent population in terms of fabric. They play an antagonistic role with respect to force chains. We are thus able to discriminate between incoherent contacts and coherent contacts in the weak phase, and to specify the role that the latter plays in the destabilisation process.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Second quantized Frobenius algebras

We show that given a Frobenius algebra there is a unique notion of its second quantization, which is the sum over all symmetric group quotients of n--th tensor powers, where the quotients are given by symmetric group twisted Frobenius algebras. To this end, we consider the setting of Frobenius algebras given by functors from geometric categories whose objects are endowed with geometric group actions and prove structural results, which in turn yield a constructive realization in the case of n--th tensor powers and the natural permutation action. We also show that naturally graded symmetric group twisted Frobenius algebras have a unique algebra structure already determined by their underlying additive data together with a choice of super--grading. Furthermore we discuss several notions of discrete torsion andshow that indeed a non--trivial discrete torsion leads to a non--trivial super structure on the second quantization.Comment: 39p. Latex. A Model for Granular Texture with Steric Exclusion

We propose a new method to characterize the geometrical texture of a granular packing at the particle scale including the steric hindrance effect. This method is based on the assumption of a maximum disorder (entropy) compatible both with strain-induced anisotropy of the contact network and steric exclusions. We show that the predicted statistics for the local configurations is in a fairly agreement with our numerical data.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
