    Effect of ionic ordering in conductivity experiments of DNA aqueous solutions

    The effects of ionic ordering in DNA water solutions are studied by conductivity experiments. The conductivity measurements are performed for the solutions of DNA with KCl salt in the temperature range from 28 to 70 C. Salt concentration vary from 0 to 2 M. The conductivity of solutions without DNA but with the same concentration of KCl salt are also performed. The results show that in case of salt free solution of DNA the melting process of the double helix is observed, while in case of DNA solution with added salt the macromolecule denaturation is not featured. For salt concentrations lower than some critical one (0.4 M) the conductivity of DNA solution is higher than the conductivity of KCl water solution without DNA. Starting from the critical concentration the conductivity of KCl solution is higher than the conductivity of DNA solution with added salt. For description of the experimental data phenomenological model is elaborated basing on electrolyte theory. In framework of the developed model a mechanism of counterion ordering is introduced. According to this mechanism under the low salt concentrations electrical conductivity of the system is caused by counterions of DNA ion-hydrate shell. Increasing the amount of salt to the critical concentration counterions condense on DNA polyanion. Further increase of salt concentration leads to the formation of DNA-salt complexes that decreases the conductivity of the system.Comment: 12 pages, 6figures. Ukr. J. Phys. (2014

    The Switched Local Area Networks’ Delay Problem: Issues and a Deterministic Solution Approach

    A large number of installed local area networks are sluggish in terms of speed of uploading and down- loading of information. Researchers have, therefore, proposed the need for such networks to be designed with specified maximum end-to-end delay. This is because, if the maximum packet delay between any two nodes of a network is not known, it is impossible to provide a deterministic guarantee of worst case response times of packets’ flows. Therefore, the need for analytic and formal basis for designing such networks becomes very imperative. In this regard, this chapter has discussed the switched local area networks’ delay problem and related issues. It compared the two principal approaches for determining the end-to-end response times of flows in communication networks – stochastic approach and determin- istic approach. The chapter goes on to demonstrate the superiority of the latter approach by using it to develop and validate the goodness of a general maximum delay packet switch model

    Exact Eigenfunctions of a Chaotic System

    The interest in the properties of quantum systems, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, derives from their abundance in nature. The spectrum of such systems can be related, in the semiclassical approximation (SCA), to the unstable classical periodic orbits, through Gutzwiller's trace formula. The class of systems studied in this work, tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, is special in this correspondence being exact, via Selberg's trace formula. In this work, an exact expression for Green's function (GF) and the eigenfunctions (EF) of tiling billiards on the pseudo-sphere, whose classical dynamics are chaotic, is derived. GF is shown to be equal to the quotient of two infinite sums over periodic orbits, where the denominator is the spectral determinant. Such a result is known to be true for typical chaotic systems, in the leading SCA. From the exact expression for GF, individual EF can be identified. In order to obtain a SCA by finite series for the infinite sums encountered, resummation by analytic continuation in â„Ź\hbar was performed. The result is similar to known results for EF of typical chaotic systems. The lowest EF of the Hamiltonian were calculated with the help of the resulting formulae, and compared with exact numerical results. A search for scars with the help of analytical and numerical methods failed to find evidence for their existence.Comment: 53 pages LaTeX, 10 Postscript figure

    Experimental and numerical prediction of extrusion load at different lubricating conditions of aluminium 6063 alloy in backward cup extrusion

    In the present research work using a backward cup extrusion (BCE) die profile, different lubricating conditions on aluminum alloy AA6063 have been experimentally and numerically investigated to predict the extrusion load. It was obvious that due to an increase in applications of the extrusion process, many researchers have worked on the extrusion process using different methods to achieve their aims. This experiment was conducted with three different lubricants namely: Castor oil, Palm Oil and tropical coconut oil; as well as without lubricants. Different lubricating conditions were employed of varying strain rates ranges from 1.5Ă—10-3s-1, 2.0Ă—10-3s-1, 2.5Ă—10-3s-1, and 3.0Ă—10-3s-1; Numerical analysis and simulation for dry and lubricated conditions during extrusion load were also performed using DEFORM 3D software. The results show that prediction extrusion load increases with increasing strain rates. The maximum extrusion load was found to be higher for extrusion without lubricants. In all cases of strain rate, palm oil showed a lower extrusion load compared to the other lubricants. Castor oil indicated the highest extrusion load when the experiment was carried out using lubrication. There was a consistent agreement between the result gotten from the experiment and simulation results of the extrusion load-strike curve.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
