Density Matrix Renormalization Group for Dummies
We describe the Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithms for time
dependent and time independent Hamiltonians. This paper is a brief but
comprehensive introduction to the subject for anyone willing to enter in the
field or write the program source code from scratch.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures. Published version. An open source version of the

Religious attitudes and home bias: theory and evidence from a pilot study
This paper examines the relationship between religion and home bias. We propose a simple theoretical framework that suggests that countries interacting via their representative individuals might show a certain degree of religion-driven international altruism that in turn affects trade. We test these predictions exploiting data from a survey on religious attitudes and individuals' preferences over consumption of home-produced versus foreign goods that we designed and carried out in 15 different countries. We find evidence that religious openness and home bias are negatively correlated. This appears to provide some support to the hypothesis that religious openness, through trust and altruism, may have a pro-trade effect.
Equilibrium and Disorder-induced behavior in Quantum Light-Matter Systems
We analyze equilibrium properties of coupled-doped cavities described by the
Jaynes-Cummings- Hubbard Hamiltonian. In particular, we characterize the
entanglement of the system in relation to the insulating-superfluid phase
transition. We point out the existence of a crossover inside the superfluid
phase of the system when the excitations change from polaritonic to purely
photonic. Using an ensemble statistical approach for small systems and
stochastic-mean-field theory for large systems we analyze static disorder of
the characteristic parameters of the system and explore the ground state
induced statistics. We report on a variety of glassy phases deriving from the
hybrid statistics of the system. On-site strong disorder induces insulating
behavior through two different mechanisms. For disorder in the light-matter
detuning, low energy cavities dominate the statistics allowing the excitations
to localize and bunch in such cavities. In the case of disorder in the light-
matter coupling, sites with strong coupling between light and matter become
very significant, which enhances the Mott-like insulating behavior. Inter-site
(hopping) disorder induces fluidity and the dominant sites are strongly coupled
to each other.Comment: about 10 pages, 12 figure
Robust and efficient generator of almost maximal multipartite entanglement
Quantum chaotic maps can efficiently generate pseudo-random states carrying
almost maximal multipartite entanglement, as characterized by the probability
distribution of bipartite entanglement between all possible bipartitions of the
system. We show that such multipartite entanglement is robust, in the sense
that, when realistic noise is considered, distillable entanglement of
bipartitions remains almost maximal up to a noise strength that drops only
polynomially with the number of qubits.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Published versio
Quantum Communication through Spin Chain Dynamics: an Introductory Overview
We present an introductory overview of the use of spin chains as quantum
wires, which has recently developed into a topic of lively interest. The
principal motivation is in connecting quantum registers without resorting to
optics. A spin chain is a permanently coupled 1D system of spins. When one
places a quantum state on one end of it, the state will be dynamically
transmitted to the other end with some efficiency if the spins are coupled by
an exchange interaction. No external modulations or measurements on the body of
the chain, except perhaps at the very ends, is required for this purpose. For
the simplest (uniformly coupled) chain and the simplest encoding (single qubit
encoding), however, dispersion reduces the quality of transfer. We present a
variety of alternatives proposed by various groups to achieve perfect quantum
state transfer through spin chains. We conclude with a brief discussion of the
various directions in which the topic is developing.Comment: Material covered till Dec 200
Conservative chaotic map as a model of quantum many-body environment
We study the dynamics of the entanglement between two qubits coupled to a
common chaotic environment, described by the quantum kicked rotator model. We
show that the kicked rotator, which is a single-particle deterministic
dynamical system, can reproduce the effects of a pure dephasing many-body bath.
Indeed, in the semiclassical limit the interaction with the kicked rotator can
be described as a random phase-kick, so that decoherence is induced in the
two-qubit system. We also show that our model can efficiently simulate
non-Markovian environments.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
