    Physical limitations to the spatial resolution of solid-state detectors

    In this paper we explore the effect of δ\delta-ray emission, fluctuations in th e signal deposition on the detection of charged particles in silicon-based detec tors. We show that these two effects ultimately limit the resolution that can be achieved by interpolation of the signal in finely segmented position-sensitive solid-state devices.Comment: 5 page

    Preparation and characterization of Pt-modified Co-based catalysts through the microemulsion technique: Preliminary results on the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis

    The influence of the addition of small amounts of platinum (0.1–0.25% wt) to cobalt-based systems on Fischer–Tropsch synthesis was investigated. The solids were synthesized through microemulsion technique using TiO2 as the support. The best catalytic performance was achieved using Synperonic 13/6.5 as the surfactant. In all cases, the presence of platinum led to an increase in CO conversion which could be ascribed to the promotion of cobalt reducibility as evidenced by XPS. Moreover, the simultaneous reduction of cobalt and platinum precursors during synthetic procedure (ME1) was preferable to the consecutive one (ME2) probably as a result of a better Co–Pt interaction in the former case, as evidenced by TPR. TPR, Raman and XPS data also suggested that not only the presence of Co0 but also the appearance of Co–TiO2 interactions favor the catalytic performance and that in general those interactions are stronger for ME1 solids

In an effort to understand ways to ease math anxiety and encourage adaptive achievement behaviors to deal with such anxiety, this paper will explore the topic and provide research-based practices in providing a solution to this existing problem in our schools. There are many studies that show using technology in the teaching of mathematics will help to alleviate math anxiety and encourage students to enjoy learning mathematics. GeoGebra, a dynamic mathematics software, can assist in developing a deeper understanding of geometric/measurement/algebraic concepts in the mathematics classrooms from Grades K-16. Emphasis on addressing math anxiety as a teacher and using technologies like GeoGebra software to teach math are the main foci of the paper

    Effect of agro-climatic conditions on near infrared spectra of extra virgin olive oils

    Authentication of extra virgin olive oil requires fast and cost-effective analytical procedures, such as near infrared spectroscopy. Multivariate analysis and chemometrics have been successfully applied in several papers to gather qualitative and quantitative information of extra virgin olive oils from near infrared spectra. Moreover, there are many examples in the literature analysing the effect of agro-climatic conditions on food content, in general, and in olive oil components, in particular. But the majority of these studies considered a factor, a non-numerical variable, containing this meteorological information. The present work uses all the agro-climatic data with the aim of highlighting the linear relationships between them and the near infrared spectra. The study begins with a graphical motivation, continues with a bivariate analysis and, finally, applies redundancy analysis to extend and confirm the previous conclusions.Peer Reviewe

    New approaches in the chemometric analysis of infrared spectra of extra-virgin olive oils

    The aim of this paper is to apply new chemometric approaches to obtain quantitative information from near and mid infrared spectra of Andalusian extra-virgin olive oils, using gas chromatography as a classical reference analytical technique. Estimations of the content in saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are given using partial least squares regression from the near and mid infrared data matrices as well as their concatenated matrix. The different estimations are evaluated in terms of goodness of fit (calibration) and prediction (validation), as a function of the number of partial least squares factors in the regression model and the used matrix of data. Furthermore, the nature, systematic or random, of the prediction errors is studied by a decomposition of their mean squared error. Finally, procedures of cross-validation are implemented in order to generalize the previous results

    Admission Variables Predict Success in a Hybrid-online Physical Therapist Education Program

    Purpose: Screening student applicants can be a valuable measure for hybrid-online Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.Institutions embrace a wide variety of measurements that drive admissions decisions. However, uncertainties exist regarding the most accurate admission predictors of academic outcomes, especially among hybrid-online DPT programs. The purpose of this study was to examine predictive relationships between applicants’ admission variables and program grade point average and National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) performance in a cohort of entry-level hybrid-online DPT students. Methods: A retrospective cohort design and convenience sampling method was used across two entry-level hybrid-online DPT programs in the Southeastern US. Hybrid-online DPT programs utilized ≥51% online instructional delivery. Applicants’ undergraduate admissions records, DPT program academic records, and NPTE scores were collected. Multiple linear regression analyses tested the hypotheses. Cross-tabulations and McNemar’s test were used to identify cut-off scores for variables and odds-ratios of passing the NPTE. Results: N=377 were collected and analyzed from two hybrid-online DPT programs (N=143 [38%] Program A; N=234 [62%] Program B) between Fall of 2018 and Spring of 2020. Applicant undergraduate (uGPA) and trending (tGPA)(final 60 credits) predicted first-time NPTE pass rate (r2 = 0.30, p2 = 0.18, p2 = 0.26, p = 0.02), F(6, 370). Applicant uGPA and tGPA were associated with 3-fold and 2-fold increase odds of passing NPTE on the first attempt, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests certain applicant variables may be more indicative of success and could be weighted more heavily during the application process. Cumulative and trending undergraduate GPA accurately predict academic performance in hybrid-online DPT education, and NPTE scores. Notably, GRE and undergraduate science GPA were unremarkable.
