    On the entanglement of a quantum field with a dispersive medium

    In this Letter we study the entanglement of a quantum radiation field interacting with a dielectric medium. In particular, we describe the quantum mixed state of a field interacting with a dielectric through plasma and Drude models and show that these generate very different entanglement behavior, as manifested in the entanglement entropy of the field. We also present a formula for a "Casimir" entanglement entropy, i.e., the distance dependence of the field entropy. Finally, we study a toy model of the interaction between two plates. In this model, the field entanglement entropy is divergent; however, as in the Casimir effect, its distance-dependent part is finite, and the field matter entanglement is reduced when the objects are far.Comment: Final published PRL versio

    Gluon density in nuclei

    In this talk we present our detail study ( theory and numbers) [1] on the shadowing corrections to the gluon structure functions for nuclei. Starting from rather contraversial information on the nucleon structure function which is originated by the recent HERA data, we develop the Glauber approach for the gluon density in a nucleus based on Mueller formula [2] and estimate the value of the shadowing corrections in this case. Than we calculate the first corrections to the Glauber approach and show that these corrections are big. Based on this practical observation we suggest the new evolution equation which takes into account the shadowing corrections and solve it. We hope to convince you that the new evolution equation gives a good theoretical tool to treat the shadowing corrections for the gluons density in a nucleus and, therefore, it is able to provide the theoretically reliable initial conditions for the time evolution of the nucleus - nucleus cascade.Comment: Talk at RHIC'96, 43 pages, 23 figure

    Scaling violation and shadowing corrections at HERA

    We study the value of shadowing corrections (SC) in HERA kinematic region in Glauber - Mueller approach. Since the Glauber - Mueller approach was proven in perturbative QCD in the double logarithmic approximation (DLA), we develop the DLA approach for deep inelastic structure function which takes into account the SC. Our estimates show small SC for F2F_2 in HERA kinematic region while they turn out to be sizable for the gluon structure function. We compare our estimates with those for gluon distribution in leading order (LO) and next to leading order (NLO) in the DGLAP evolution equations.Comment: 9pp,6 figures in eps file

    Initial experiments concerning quantum information processing in rare-earth-ion doped crystals

    In this paper initial experiments towards constructing simple quantum gates in a solid state material are presented. Instead of using specially tailored materials, the aim is to select a subset of randomly distributed ions in the material, which have the interaction necessary to control each other and therefore can be used to do quantum logic operations. The experimental results demonstrate that part of an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line can be selected as a qubit and that a subset of ions in the material can control the resonance frequency of other ions. This opens the way for the construction of quantum gates in rare-earth-ion doped crystals.Comment: 24 pages, including 12 figure

    Normal zone in YBa2Cu3O6+xYBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}-coated conductors

    We consider the distribution of an electric field in YBCO-coated conductors for a situation in which the DC transport current is forced into the copper stabilizer due to a weak link -- a section of the superconducting film with a critical current less than the transport current. The electric field in the metal substrate is also discussed. The results are compared with recent experiments on normal zone propagation in coated conductors for which the substrate and stabilizer are insulated from each other. The potential difference between the substrate and stabilizer, and the electric field in the substrate outside the normal zone can be accounted for by a large screening length in the substrate, comparable to the length of the sample. During a quench, the electric field inside the interface between YBCO and stabilizer, as well as in the buffer layer, can be several orders of magnitude greater than the longitudinal macroscopic electric field inside the normal zone. We speculate on the possibility of using possible microscopic electric discharges caused by this large (\sim kV/cm) electric field as a means to detect a quench.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    A CAJM article on Subdural Haematoma.Most cases of subdural haematoma in the wards are chronic in nature and its diagnosis may be difficult. A subdural haematoma can be regarded as chronic if the haematoma has a membrane around it or is operated on more than 10 days after the receipt of the trauma. The typical features one would expect such as ipsilateral pupillary dilatation (caused by compression of the third cranial nerve) and contralateral hemiplegia (caused by compression of the crus cerebri against the falx) are not commonly encountered.     Measuring the saturation scale in nuclei

    The saturation momentum seeing in the nuclear infinite momentum frame is directly related to transverse momentum broadening of partons propagating through the medium in the nuclear rest frame.
