Revealing the competitive effect of N2 and H2O towards CO2 adsorption in N-rich ordered mesoporous carbons
The incorporation of heteroatoms improves CO2 adsorption on carbon-based materials, but it can also provide some hydrophilic character to the bare-carbon frameworks, making the hypothesis of competitive CO2/H2O adsorption not negligible. In this respect, the CO2 capture is here evaluated through a deep characterization of the sorption properties of N-rich ordered mesoporous carbons under dry and moisture conditions, and in CO2/N2 gas mixtures. The nanocasting strategy is used to obtain N-rich CMK-3-type carbons in one pot by impregnating D-glucosamine hydrochloride, a carbon/nitrogen source, into an SBA-15 silica template followed by pyrolysis treatment at 600, 750, and 900 °C. The fine-tuning of the pyrolysis treatment aims to find the right proportion of micropores and N content, which are important features for selective CO2 adsorption. The highest surface amount of N (11.3 at.%), in particular of the pyridinic type, enhances the CO2/N2 selectivity (1.03 mmol/g of adsorbed CO2 from a 20% CO2 in N2), but also the undesired increment in the H2O uptake. CO2 uptake under competitive CO2/H2O conditions is better preserved with 8.3 at.% of surface nitrogen (1.55, 1.52, 0.61, and 0.89 mmol/g of CO2 at a relative humidity of 0, 25, 50, and 75%, respectively). Interestingly, the N-CMK-3 materials retain their capture properties over repetitive adsorption-desorption cycles in pure CO2. In this respect, a TGA-FTIR study is performed to monitor the reusability of the sorbents after CO2 capture from moist flue gases to assess the effectiveness of the reactivation procedure towards the removal of the adsorbed species
Tailoring the oxidation state of cobalt through halide functionality in sol-gel silica
The functionality or oxidation state of cobalt within a silica matrix can be tailored through the use of cationic surfactants and their halide counter ions during the sol-gel synthesis. Simply by adding surfactant we could significantly increase the amount of cobalt existing as Co3O4 within the silica from 44% to 77%, without varying the cobalt precursor concentration. However, once the surfactant to cobalt ratio exceeded 1, further addition resulted in an inhibitory mechanism whereby the altered pyrolysis of the surfactant decreased Co3O4 production. These findings have significant implications for the production of cobalt/silica composites where maximizing the functional Co3O4 phase remains the goal for a broad range of catalytic, sensing and materials applications
Stabilization of mesoporous nanocrystalline zirconia with Laponite
The mesoporous nanocrystalline zircoina was synthesized via solid state reaction-structure directing method in the presence of Laponite. The introduction of Laponite renders the higher thermal stability and lamellar track to the zirconia. Laponite acts as inhibitor for crystal growth and also hard template for the mesostructure. The role of Laponite is attributed to the interaction between the zirconia precursors and the nano-platelets of Laponite via the bridge of hydrophilic segments of surfactant. It results in the formation of Zr-O-Mg-O-Si frameworks in the direction of Laponite layer with the condensation of frameworks during the calcination process, which contributes the higher stability and lamellar structure to the nano-sized zirconia samples
Template Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Cubic Ordered Mesoporous Carbon With Tunable Pore Sizes
Three-dimensional cubic ordered mesoporous carbons with tunable pore sizes have been synthesized by using cubic Ia3d mesoporous KIT-6 silica as the hard template and boric acid as the pore expanding agent. The prepared ordered mesoporous carbons were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. The results show that the pore sizes of the prepared ordered mesoporous carbons with three-dimensional cubic structure can be regulated in the range of 3.9–9.4 nm. A simplified model was proposed to analyze the tailored pore sizes of the prepared ordered mesoporous carbons on the basis of the structural parameters of the silica template
Microstructural and Electrical Features of Yttrium Stabilised Zirconia with ZnO as Sintering Additive
Adding ZnO reduces sintering temperature of yttria stabilized zirconia. Adding up to 0.5 wt% of ZnO is possible to densify to 8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (TZ8Y) to 95% of relative density at 1300 °C, besides, the electrical conductivity increases about 30% at 800 °C when compared to pure TZ8Y with the same relative density and average grain size. These results show that TZ8Y co-doped with ZnO can be a potential electrolyte to solid oxide fuel cells and electrolyzer cells
