Magnetization-controlled spin transport in DyAs/GaAs layers
Electrical transport properties of DyAs epitaxial layers grown on GaAs have
been investigated at various temperatures and magnetic fields up to 12T. The
measured longitudinal resistances show two distinct peaks at fields around 0.2
and 2.5T which are believed to be related to the strong spin-disorder
scattering occurring at the phase transition boundaries induced by external
magnetic field. An empirical magnetic phase diagram is deduced from the
temperature dependent experiment, and the anisotropic transport properties are
also presented for various magnetic field directions with respect to the

Quantum Monte Carlo modelling of the spherically averaged structure factor of a many-electron system
The interaction and exchange-correlation contributions to the ground-state
energy of an arbitrary many-electron system can be obtained from a spherical
average of the wavevector-dependent diagonal structure factor (SF). We model
the continuous-k spherically averaged SF using quantum Monte Carlo calculations
in finite simulation cells. We thus derive a method that allows to
substantially reduce the troublesome Coulomb finite-size errors that are
usually present in ground-state energy calculations. To demonstrate this, we
perform variational Monte Carlo calculations of the interaction energy of the
homogeneous electron gas. The method is, however, equally applicable to
arbitrary inhomogeneous systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Static inconsistencies in certain axiomatic higher-order shear deformation theories for beams, plates and shells
AbstractStatic inconsistencies that arise when modelling the flexural behaviour of beams, plates and shells with clamped boundary conditions using a certain class of axiomatic, higher-order shear deformation theory are discussed. The inconsistencies pertain to displacement-based theories that enforce conditions of vanishing shear strain at the top and bottom surfaces a priori. First it is shown that the essential boundary condition of vanishing Kirchhoff rotation perpendicular to an edge (w,x=0 or w,y=0) is physically inaccurate, as the rotation at a clamped edge may in fact be non-zero due to the presence of transverse shear rotation. As a result, the shear force derived from constitutive equations erroneously vanishes at a clamped edge. In effect, this boundary condition overconstrains the structure leading to underpredictions in transverse bending deflection and overpredictions of axial stresses compared to high-fidelity 3D finite element solutions for thick and highly orthotropic plates. Generalised higher-order theories written in the form of a power series, as in Carrera’s Unified Formulation, do not produce this inconsistency. It is shown that the condition of vanishing shear tractions at the top and bottom surfaces need not be applied a priori, as the transverse shear strains inherently vanish if the order of the theory is sufficient to capture all higher-order effects. Finally, the transverse deflection of the generalised higher-order theories is expanded in a power series of a non-dimensional parameter and used to derive a material and geometry dependent shear correction factor that provides more accurate solutions of bending deflection than the classical value of 5/6
The Disturbed 17 keV Cluster Associated with the Radio Galaxy 3C 438
We present results from a {\em Chandra} observation of the cluster gas
associated with the FR II radio galaxy 3C 438. This radio galaxy is embedded
within a massive cluster with gas temperature 17 keV and bolometric
luminosity of 6 ergs s. It is unclear if this high
temperature represents the gravitational mass of the cluster, or if this is an
already high ( 11 keV) temperature cluster that has been heated
transiently. We detect a surface brightness discontinuity in the gas that
extends 600 kpc through the cluster. The radio galaxy 3C 438 is too small
(110 kpc across) and too weak to have created this large disturbance in
the gas. The discontinuity must be the result of either an extremely powerful
nuclear outburst or the major merger of two massive clusters. If the observed
features are the result of a nuclear outburst, it must be from an earlier epoch
of unusually energetic nuclear activity. However, the energy required
( ergs) to move the gas on the observed spatial scales strongly
supports the merger hypothesis. In either scenario, this is one of the most

Town centre improvements through sustainable procurement
The project is investigating the potential to reduce town centre business costs and negative environmental impacts through the use of innovations in procurement and freight transport. These innovations include collaborative procurement, Business Improvement Districts, and Delivery and Servicing Plans. These approaches were being trialled and evaluated in three British towns: Cambridge, Lowestoft and Norwich. 17 companies were developing and applying a Delivery and Servicing Plan. Clumpy Ultracompact HII Regions I: Fully Supersonic Wind-blown Models
We propose that a significant fraction of the ultracompact HII regions found
in massive star-forming clouds are the result of the interaction of the wind
and ionizing radiation from a young massive star with the clumpy molecular
cloud gas in its neighbourhood. Distributed mass loading in the flow allows the
compact nebulae to be long-lived. In this paper, we discuss a particularly
simple case, in which the flow in the HII region is everywhere supersonic. The
line profiles predicted for this model are highly characteristic, for the case
of uniform mass loading. We discuss briefly other observational diagnostics of
