    A Scalar Wigner Theory for Polarized Light in Nonlinear Kerr Media

    A scalar Wigner distribution function for describing polarized light is proposed in analogy with the treatment of spin variables in quantum kinetic theory. The formalism is applied to the propagation of circularly polarized light in nonlinear Kerr media and an extended phase space evolution equation is derived along with invariant quantities.     Real Time Correlators in Hot (2+1)d QCD

    We use dimensional reduction techniques to relate real time finite T correlation functions in (2+1) dimensional QCD to bound state parameters in a generalized 't Hooft model with an infinite number of heavy quark and adjoint scalar fields. While static susceptibilities and correlation functions of the DeTar type can be calculated using only the light (static) gluonic modes, the dynamical correlators require the inclusion of the heavy modes. In particular we demonstrate that the leading T perturbative result can be understood in terms of the bound states of the 2d model and that consistency requires bound state trajectories composed of both quarks and adjoint scalars. We also propose a non-perturbative expression for the dynamical DeTar correlators at small spatial momenta.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, uses axodra

    Edge Theories for Polarized Quantum Hall States

    Starting from recently proposed bosonic mean field theories for fully and partially polarized quantum Hall states, we construct corresponding effective low energy theories for the edge modes. The requirements of gauge symmetry and invariance under global O(3) spin rotations, broken only by a Zeeman coupling, imply boundary conditions that allow for edge spin waves. In the generic case, these modes are chiral, and the spin stiffness differs from that in the bulk.     Reasoning with comparative moral judgements: an argument for Moral Bayesianism

    The paper discusses the notion of reasoning with comparative moral judgements (i.e judgements of the form “act a is morally superior to act b”) from the point of view of several meta-ethical positions. Using a simple formal result, it is argued that only a version of moral cognitivism that is committed to the claim that moral beliefs come in degrees can give a normatively plausible account of such reasoning. Some implications of accepting such a version of moral cognitivism are discussed

    Near-Optimal Scheduling for LTL with Future Discounting

    We study the search problem for optimal schedulers for the linear temporal logic (LTL) with future discounting. The logic, introduced by Almagor, Boker and Kupferman, is a quantitative variant of LTL in which an event in the far future has only discounted contribution to a truth value (that is a real number in the unit interval [0, 1]). The precise problem we study---it naturally arises e.g. in search for a scheduler that recovers from an internal error state as soon as possible---is the following: given a Kripke frame, a formula and a number in [0, 1] called a margin, find a path of the Kripke frame that is optimal with respect to the formula up to the prescribed margin (a truly optimal path may not exist). We present an algorithm for the problem; it works even in the extended setting with propositional quality operators, a setting where (threshold) model-checking is known to be undecidable

    An analysis of photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra of Si(111) and sulphur-passivated InP(001) surfaces

    Photoemission (PES) and inverse-photoemission spectra (IPES) for the sulphur-passivated InP(001) surface are compared with theoretical predictions based on density-functional calculations. As a test case for our methods, we also present a corresponding study of the better known Si(111) surface. The reported spectra for InP(001)-S agree well with the calculated ones if the surface is assumed to consist of a mixture of two phases, namely, the fully S-covered (2Ă—2)(2\times2)-reconstructed structure, which contains four S atoms in the surface unit-cell, and a (2Ă—2)(2\times2) structure containing two S and two P atoms per unit cell. The latter has recently been identified in total-energy calculations as well as in core-level spectra of S-passivated Si(111)-(2Ă—1)(2\times1) is in excellent agreement with the calculations. The comparison of the experimental-PES with our calculations provides additional considerations regarding the nature of the sample surface. It is also found that the commonly-used density-of-states approximation to the photo- and inverse- photoemission spectra is not valid for these systems.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.     Ultimate pH values and bacteriological condition of meat and stress metabolites in blood of transported reindeer bulls

    Twenty-three reindeer bulls, aged 2-3 years, fed during two winter months at the Vuolda reindeer research station in Arjeplog, Sweden, were used in the study. The first group of eight reindeer was moved from their feeding corral to a selection corral, captured by lasso and stunned with a captive bolt outside the selection corral. The second group of seven reindeer was moved to the selection corral, captured by lasso and restrained, after which they were loaded onto a lorry- and transported for 1 hour and then slaughtered. The third group of eight reindeer was moved to the selection corral and herded directly onto the lorry, without any manual handling. They were transported for 5 h and then slaughtered. In both transport groups, four reindeer were fitted with pre-programmed automatic blood sampling equipment (ABSE). ABSE sampled blood at predetermined times via a jugular vein catheter. Ultimate pH-values in three muscles (Mm. longissimus, triceps brachii and biceps femoris) were significantly lower in the group carefully handled and transported for 5 h compared with the other two groups. The physiological mechanisms behind these results are discussed. Samples from M. semimembranosus were collected at slaughter and after 2, 6 and 10 days of refrigerated storage (+4 °C). The samples were analysed for total counts of aerobic bacteria (pour-plated in Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar, Difco, incubated at 20 °C and 30 °C, respectively for 72 h), coliform bacteria 37 °C (pour-plated in Violet Red Bile Agar, Oxoid, incubated at 37 °C for 24 h), Enterococci (surface-plated onto Slantez and Bartley Agar, Oxoid, incubated at 44 °C for 48 h) and Bacillus cereus (surface-plated onto Blood Agar Plates (Blood Agar Base, Difco, supplemented with 5% defibrinated horse blood) 30 °C for 24 h). All samples fell in the range 'fit for consumption'. At slaughter, there was no difference in ASAT activity, urea and Cortisol concentrations between the two transported groups. However, the plasma ASAT activity and urea concentrations at slaughter were significantly lower in the non-transported group. In both transport groups, the plasma Cortisol concentrations increased during loading onto and unloading from the lorry. Abomasal lesions were observed in all treatment groups. It was concluded that reindeer showed an acute stress response to manual handling and transport

    Magnetically-trapped atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates are spin polarized. Since the magnetic field is inhomogeneous, the atoms aquire Berry phases of the Aharonov-Bohm type during adiabatic motion. In the presence of an eletric field there is an additional Aharonov-Casher effect. Taking into account the limitations on the strength of the electric fields due to the polarizability of the atoms, we investigate the extent to which these effects can be used to induce rotation in a Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 5 pages, 2 ps figures, RevTe

    In this paper we work on (bi)simulation semantics of processes that exhibit both nondeterministic and probabilistic behaviour. We propose a probabilistic extension of the modal mu-calculus and show how to derive characteristic formulae for various simulation-like preorders over finite-state processes without divergence. In addition, we show that even without the fixpoint operators this probabilistic mu-calculus can be used to characterise these behavioural relations in the sense that two states are equivalent if and only if they satisfy the same set of formulae.Comment: 18 page

    Massless fermions in a bag at finite density and temperature

    We introduce the chemical potential in a system of massless fermions in a bag by impossing boundary conditions in the Euclidean time direction. We express the fermionic mean number in terms of a functional trace involving the Green's function of the boundary value problem, which we study analytically.
