Operant Discriminative Learning and Evidence of Subtelencephalic Plastic Changes After Long-Term Detelencephalation in Pigeons
We analyzed operant discrimination in
detelencephalated pigeons and neuroanatomical
substrates after long-term detelencephalation.
In Experiment I, experimental pigeons with
massive telencephalic ablation and control
pigeons were conditioned to key peck for food.
Successive discrimination was made under
alternating red (variable-ratio reinforcement)
and yellow (extinction) lights in one key of the
chamber. These relations were interchanged
during reversal discrimination. The sessions
were run until steady-state rates were achieved.
Experiment II analyzed the morphology of the
nucleus rotundus and optic tectum in long-term
detelencephalated and control birds, using a
Klüver-Barrera staining and image analyzer
system. Detelencephalated birds had more
training sessions for response shaping and
steady-state behavior (p<0.001), higher red key
peck rates during discrimination (p<0.01), and reversal discrimination indexes around 0.50.
Morphometric analysis revealed a decreased
number of neurons and increased vascularity,
associated with increases in the perimeter
(p<0.001)
in the nucleus rotundus. In the optic
tectum, increases in the perimeter (p<0.05)
associated with disorganization in the layers
arrangement were seen. The data indicate that
telencephalic systems might have an essential
function in reversal operant discrimination
learning. The structural characteristics of subtelencephalic
systems after long-term detelencephalation
evidence plastic changes that
might be related to functional mechanisms of
learning and neural plasticity in pigeons

Localised and delocalised plasmons in metallic nano-voids
Nanostructured metal films comprised of periodically arranged spherical voids are grown by electrochemical deposition through a self-assembled template. Detailed measurements of the angle- and orientation-dependent reflectivity for different sample geometries reveal the spectral dispersion of several different types of surface plasmon modes. The dependence of the energies of both delocalized Bragg and localized Mie plasmons on the void goemetry is presented, along with theoretical models to explain some of these experimental findings. Strong interactions between the different plasmon modes as well as other mixing processes are identified. Understanding such plasmonic crystals allows for the engineering of devices tailored for a wide range of sensing application

Genomic variant hotspots in nelore cattle revealed by missing genotypes.
In order to investigate whether or not the ?missing? genotypes actually reveal genomic variant hotspots, we examined BovineHD missing genotypes from a total of 1,709 Nelore DNA samples and used sequence data from eight of them to identify putative polymorphisms flanking the assayed SNPs.PAG 2015. [vasopressin And Brain Death].
Brain death results in the breakdown of effective central regulatory mechanisms of cardiocirculatory stability, even in patients with artificial mechanical ventilation, correction of electrolytic and acid-basic disorders and maximal conventional pharmacological support of the circulation. Recent evidences have shown that the fall of vasopressin levels in the blood circulation significantly influences the cardiocirculatory stability of patients with brain death, and its exogenous administration is defended by many authors for the management of multiorgan donor patients. In this brief review we analyse and discuss some experimental and clinical relevant studies about the role of vasopressin in the control of cardiocirculatory stability in brain death, and its potential usefulness in the management of multiorgan donor. We conclude that the role of vasopressin in the pathophysiology of brain death and its usefulness as a pharmacological agent in the management of multiorgan donor are not well elucidated, deserving further investigations.58181-
Statin short-term inhibition of insulin sensitivity and secretion during acute phase of ST-elevation myocardial infarction
Hyperglycemia during myocardial infarction (MI) has a strong and direct association with mortality. In stable patients and experimental models, statins favor the elevation of glycaemia. The present study investigated whether short-course treatment with statins during MI can influence glucose homeostasis and thus the clinical outcome. In this prospective study, euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp (EHC) was performed at second (D2) and sixth (D6) day after MI in patients randomized to simvastatin (S)10 or 80 mg/day during hospitalization (n = 27). In addition, patients (n = 550) were treated without (WS) or with simvastatin (S) at 20, 40 or 80 mg/day had HOMA2S on admission (D1) and fifth (D5) day after MI. According to EHC, insulin sensitivity increased by 20 +/- 60% in S10 and decreased by -6 +/- 28% in S80 (p = 0.025). Consistently, the changes in HOMA2S between D1 and D5 were 40 +/- 145% (WS), 22 +/- 117% (S20), 16 +/- 61% (S40) and -2% +/- 88% (S80) (p = 0.001). In conclusion, statin during the acute phase of MI reduces insulin sensitivity in a dose-dependent manner.9CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ301465/2017-
Genome Sequencing and de novo assembly of the South American Tiger Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma punctifer).
The South American Tiger Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma punctifer) is a freshwater fish species naturally found in the Amazon river basin with an important role in local community and commercial fishing. Recent efforts to domesticate and raise the species in aquaculture systems has led to >10-fold production increases in the last decade. Current production levels are >15,000mt/year. Recently stablished initiatives to structure genetic improvement programs for increasing productivity-associated traits could greatly benefit from using genomic tools for broodstock management and assisted genetic evaluations and breeding. Multiple shotgun libraries with two different insert sizes and multiple Nextera mate pair libraries with three different sizes were sequenced (2x160bps) with Illumina HiSeq2000 technology. A total of 124.8Gbp quality-filtered nucleotides were sequenced which amount to 85x mean genome coverage, considering previously published information (C-value = 1.12pg = 1.095Gbp). Initial sequence assembly was performed with SOAPdenovo and generated 686.171 scaffolds spanning 1.41 Gbp (N50 scaffold length: 908Kbp, L50 scaffold count: 420). Gene model prediction is underway with MAKER2 using as extrinsic evidence protein and EST data from phylogenetically related taxa. This represents the first report of a draft genome sequence for this species, which will be a valuable resource for basic biology studies, and marker detection/selection for use in genetic improvement and resource conservation activities.PAG 2016.
