Directional wave spectra observed during JONSWAP 1973
Estimates of the directional wave spectrum obtained from the meteorological buoy of the University of Hamburg and a pitch-and-roll buoy of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences are reported from a series of measurements made within the framework of the Joint North Sea Wave Project during September 1973. Three main aspects were considered. First, the properties and parameterization of the directional spectrum were studied when the waves were generated by steady winds without any significant swell contribution. The results do not support the parameterization proposed by Mitsuyasu et al. (1975) and are in agreement with a parameterization in which the peak frequency is the relevant scale parameter. Second, comparisons are made between two independent methods of fitting the data exactly by means of a maximum likelihood technique (Long and Hasselmann, 1979) and a least-squares technique. The two methods give very similar fits to the observed data. Finally, the response of the directional wave spectrum to veering winds is considered and a simple model is constructed as a first attempt to describe some of the observations
The Belgrade PaleoBlitz: A Pilot Project to Engage Amateur Paleontologists
Paleontology is an interdisciplinary field that attracts a range of individuals, from hobbyists to professionals. A primary goal of the NSF-funded FOSSIL Project is to establish a unified community of paleontologists and promote best practices in the field of paleontology. The Belgrade PaleoBlitz was a pilot effort to meet these goals by guiding participants through the museum curation process via a rapid two-day immersion. The objectives of the PaleoBlitz event were to: 1) educate participants in best practices associated with the museum curation process, and 2) catalog specimens collected from the Belgrade Quarry into the Florida Museum of Natural History vertebrate paleontology collections. These objectives seek to find a balance between educating participants and contributing to science. A pre-event application dispersed to amateur paleontology clubs throughout the United States determined applicants’ baseline content knowledge and practices. To facilitate learning and promote networking, we selected 13 participants who varied in expertise from six different paleontology organizations. Immediate and delayed post-event surveys assessed acceptance and implementation of best practices, confidence related to specific aspects of the museum curation process, and expansion of individuals’ personal paleontology network. Responses showed that all participants made changes to their existing collections, felt more confident in specific aspects of the museum curation process, and had continued connections with other participants after this event
Three Warm Jupiters around Solar-analog Stars Detected with TESS*
We report the discovery and characterization of three giant exoplanets orbiting solar-analog stars, detected by the TESS space mission and confirmed through ground-based photometry and radial velocity measurements taken at La Silla observatory with FEROS. TOI-2373 b is a warm Jupiter orbiting its host star every ∼13.3 days, and is one of the most massive known exoplanet with a precisely determined mass and radius around a star similar to the Sun, with an estimated mass of m _p = and a radius of r _p = . With a mean density of , TOI-2373 b is among the densest planets discovered so far. TOI-2416 b orbits its host star on a moderately eccentric orbit with a period of ∼8.3 days and an eccentricity of e = . TOI-2416 b is more massive than Jupiter with m _p = , however is significantly smaller with a radius of r _p = , leading to a high mean density of . TOI-2524 b is a warm Jupiter near the hot Jupiter transition region, orbiting its star every ∼7.2 days on a circular orbit. It is less massive than Jupiter with a mass of m _p = , and is consistent with an inflated radius of r _p = , leading to a low mean density of . The newly discovered exoplanets TOI-2373 b, TOI-2416 b, and TOI-2524 b have estimated equilibrium temperatures of K, K, and K, respectively, placing them in the sparsely populated transition zone between hot and warm Jupiters
Mobile Arbeit – räumlich entgrenzt und ortsgebunden
Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit Anforderungen ortsgebundener mobiler Arbeit und den daraus resultierenden Belastungen. Die Diskussion um mobile Arbeit wird überwiegend vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender räumlicher und zeitlicher Gestaltungsspielräume von Wissensarbeiter/-innen geführt. In diesem Beitrag steht hingegen die ortsgebundene mobile Arbeit von Techniker/-innen im Fokus, welche die Anwesenheit der Beschäftigten bei Kund/-innen zwingend voraussetzt. Anhand der Empirie werden neue Anforderungen analysiert, die im Zusammenhang mit der Digitalisierung stehen und sich sowohl auf die Tätigkeit und den Arbeitsprozess selbst als auch auf die räumliche und digitale Mobilität auswirken.Praktische Relevanz: Die empirischen Ergebnisse verweisen auf die Notwendigkeit einer Arbeitsgestaltung, die neben den Anforderungen, die sich aus der konkreten Arbeitstätigkeit ergeben, auch die mobilitätsbedingten Anforderungen mit in den Blick nimmt. Erst durch die systematische Analyse des Zusammenwirkens beider Bereiche ergeben sich spezifische Erkenntnisse für die Gestaltung von mobiler ortsgebundener Arbeit. Durch die Unterscheidung in arbeits- und mobilitätsbezogene Anforderungen wird zudem der Fokus auf die räumliche Mobilität und auf die dazu notwendige Mobilitätsarbeit gelenkt

Profile derived turbulent fluxes in the surface layer under disturbed and undisturbed conditions during GATE
The fluxes of momentum, heat, and water vapour have been obtained by the aerodynamic profile method. Within the frame work of GATE variation of fluxes with disturbed conditions are of special interest. The time traces of surface layer parameters repeatedly showed definite instationarities marked by a sudden drop of temperature by a few degrees centigrade. For these pronounced instationarities, equilibrium state of the profiles was regained after a few minutes, in agreement with scale considerations. For fluxes properly nondimensionalized in terms of surface layer parameters, no systematic deviations have been found under disturbed conditions compared with undisturbed conditions. Due to systematic variations of parameters, the energy exchange between sea and atmosphere was enhanced by about 30 % under disturbed conditions. From the above evidence it is concluded that for larger scale investigations reliable determination of fluxes from surface layer mean variables is possible
