    The Experiences of Saudi Third Culture Kids Following Repatriation: A Phenomenological Approach

    This study investigated the collective experience of repatriation, as reported by preadolescent, Saudi Arabian boys between the ages of nine and 13, who had lived for a minimum of one year in a country outside of the Arab world, and had subsequently returned to Saudi Arabia. While the study was open to students between the ages of nine and 13, the actual sample consisted of boys who were between the ages of 10 and 12. Eleven Saudi Arabian boys were interviewed to gather their accounts of their lives before, during, and after their time abroad. They discussed their experiences surrounding repatriation and their readjustment to living in Saudi Arabia. Students were also asked to provide advice relating to how schools can adjust their programs to facilitate the readjustment process. Findings concluded that students of this age group are relatively resilient. The consensus of the participants was that remedial Arabic-language classes and a buddy system would provide the greatest benefit to newly repatriated students

    Specific heat at the transition in a superconductor with fluctuating magnetic moments

    In the heavy-fermion materials CeCoIn5_5 and UBe13_{13}, the superconducting order parameter is coupled to flucutating magnetization of the uncompensated part of the localized ff-moments. We find that this coupling decreases the superconducting transition temperature and increases the jump of the specific-heat coefficient, which indicates entropy transfer from the magnetic to the superconducting degree of freedom at the transition temperature. Below the transition, we find that the magnetic fluctuations are suppressed. We discuss the relation of our results to experiments on CeCoIn5_5 under pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    A field study on human factor and safety performances in a downstream oil industry

In this work, the role of human factors in an oil industry was studied by the collection of field data through a structured questionnaire filled by shift, daily and outsourced workers. A deep investigation on the variables involved in the process was carried out, firstly quantifying three conceptual key dimensions (individual, human resource management, equipment and technology) and then analyzing data by means of Response Surface Methodology (RSM), to identify the statistical significant factors and the overall level of safety awareness, behaviour and risk perception of the respondents

    NMR Evidence for Charge Inhomogeneity in Stripe Ordered La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{x}CuO_4

    We report ^{17}O Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) results in the stripe ordered La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{x}CuO_4 system. Below a temperature T_q ~ 80K, the local electric field gradient (EFG) and the absolute intensity of the NMR signal of the planar O site exhibit a dramatic decrease. We interpret these results as microscopic evidence for a spatially inhomogeneous charge distribution, where the NMR signal from O sites in the domain walls of the spin density modulation are wiped out due to large hyperfine fields, and the remaining signal arises from the intervening Mott insulating regions.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in Phys.     Uncovering the Hidden Order in URu2Si2 by Impurity Doping

    We report the use of impurities to probe the hidden order parameter of the strongly correlated metal URu_2Si_2 below the transition temperature T_0 ~ 17.5 K. The nature of this order parameter has eluded researchers for more than two decades, but is accompanied by the development of a partial gap in the single particle density of states that can be detected through measurements of the electronic specific heat and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We find that impurities in the hidden order phase give rise to local patches of antiferromagnetism. An analysis of the coupling between the antiferromagnetism and the hidden order reveals that the former is not a competing order parameter but rather a parasitic effect of the latter.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    An Application of Engineering 4.0 to Hospitalized Patients

    In this paper the authors address the problem of surveillance of bedridden patients in hospitals and residences for elderly. Unfortunately, patients cannot be supervised by operators 24 h a day, given the associated costs. An attempt to solve this problem is already provided by wearable devices. This paper describes a 4.0 system implemented to overcome the limits (identified by interviewing a sample of nurses belonging to different facilities) of the wearable devices available on the market. The system proposed consists in monitoring the bed, instead of the patient, through applied sensors. By centralizing and analyzing the data collected it is possible to promptly inform the operative center of the occurrence of risky events to which bedridden patients are normally subjected. The scope of the system is preventing such risks, where possible, or mitigating their effects with a real time intervention. A case study on an active facility, conducted as a pilot project, confirms the humanitarian and economic benefits for patients and facility
