The purpose of the present work is to describe and present the final results of a Personal and Social Competence Promotion Program – PSCPP [1] [2] carried out in the community with a group of older people (> 55 years) living in Lisbon. This project [4] was born from a partnership between Junta de Freguesia de Santa Maria de Belém and the Social Adventure’s team of the Faculty of Human Kinetics. The mentioned project took place from November 2003 until July of 2005, and included both regular and extra sessions. The “Peer” Project aimed at promoting healthy life styles; developing interpersonal skills, collaboration and support competences among the seniors; as well as adaptation to aging and development of behaviors related to positive health. In the first year, a group of elderly volunteered to participate in the sessions carried out by the technician and, in the second year, some elements of this group leaded the session for other new-comers.FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), IDP (Instituto do Desporto de Portugal), AIESEP World Congres

Primary prevention, through universal interventions, aims at the development of personal and social resources, and nowadays, it is one of the most important strategies for the prevention of drugs abuse in youth. School setting is pointed out as one of the best scenarios for health promotion actions. In this article are shown results of a Personal and Social Competences Promotion Program - PSCPP [1] [2] which took place in two schools in Lisbon. The program aims to prevent substance use, by means of developing personal and social competences. 100 students, aged between eight and eleven years, participated, mostly boys. The intervention occurred during school classes and was based on role-playing activities. Evaluation showed significant positive results in what concerns psychological difficulties, perception of social support, and problem solving competences. Teachers’ evaluation pointed out a better social behaviour among peers, as well as the importance of implementing programs promoting personal and social competences in schools. PSCPP had a positive impact on children positive health. Details of this project can be found in a manual [3].FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), IDP (Instituto do Desporto de Portugal), AIESEP World Congres

The Reguengos de Monsaraz pluton is a late to post-tectonic Variscan intrusion occurring in the Ossa Morena Zone (Iberian Variscan Chain). The dominant lithological types are tonalites and granodiorites, but the internal area of the massif is composed of gabbro-dioritic rocks. Field evidence shows that the intrusion is heterogeneous at mesoscopic scale suggesting that the emplacement of mafic and felsic magmas was contemporaneous. Petrographic and geochemical studies reveal that the different lithologic types define a continuous sequence with compositions varying from metaluminous to slightly peraluminous and a typical calc-alkaline signature. In Harker variation diagrams, it is possible to observe systematic rectilinear correlations pointing to the involvement of magma mingling/mixing processes in the petrogenesis of this sequence. Rb-Sr isotopic data, using a mineral-mineral pair from a granodiorite sample, yielded an age of 298 Ma, interpreted as a cooling age after igneous crystallization.

A serious game-based solution to prevent bullying

    Get PDF
This paper presents a Serious Game with the main purpose of inducing attitude changes as a way to prevent bullying, in a target audience of young people between 10 and 12 years old. The rationale for prevention is: first, to help victims of these aggressive episodes to acquire or improve competencies in avoiding or dealing with future real bullying situations; and, second, to promote empathy towards the victims in bystanders. A back office application complements the game, providing substantial assistance to psychologists while using the game with patients in therapy or in research work. Both components, the game and the back office, were evaluated with volunteers. The user study lead us to the conclusion that the current version of the game holds good potential in bullying prevention: the young people that played the game in a continuous time span, at the end of this testing process have expressed improvements in their bullying prevention strategies. The back office application was positively assessed by the psychologists who tested it. The game deals with strong social features, such as number of friends and invitations to social events (e.g. a birthday party), to which young people give much importance. Additionally, it offers a variability of scenarios and consequences of actions, taking into account the user's performance in the game. The main factors that make the presented solution stand out in comparison with other similar bullying prevention solutions are mainly the following: it includes a back office application to assist therapists with data management features; the role of the player in the game can be chosen accordingly to his own profile; it is possible to play even outside a therapy session (e.g. at home) and it is a portable solution.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
