Comparison of Power Dependence of Microwave Surface Resistance of Unpatterned and Patterned YBCO Thin Film
The effect of the patterning process on the nonlinearity of the microwave
surface resistance of YBCO thin films is investigated. With the use of a
sapphire dielectric resonator and a stripline resonator, the microwave of
YBCO thin films was measured before and after the patterning process, as a
function of temperature and the rf peak magnetic field in the film. The
microwave loss was also modeled, assuming a dependence of

From Service to Experience: Understanding and Defining the Hospitality Business
Failure adequately to define or understand hospitality as a commercial phenomenon has created a fragmented academic environment and a schizophrenia in the industry that has the potential to limit its development as a global industry. This article suggests that, by redefining hospitality as behaviour and experience, a new perspective emerges that has exciting implications for the management of hospitality businesses. A framework to describe hospitality in the commercial domain is proposed. This framework suggests a focus on the host–guest relationship, generosity, theatre and performance, ‘lots of little surprises’, and the security of strangers – a focus that provides guests with experiences that are personal, memorable and add value to their lives
Development of an environmental functional gene microarray for soil microbial communities
Functional attributes of microbial communities are difficult to study, and most current techniques rely on DNA- and rRNA-based profiling of taxa and genes, including microarrays containing sequences of known microorganisms. To quantify gene expression in environmental samples in a culture-independent manner, we constructed an environmental functional gene microarray (E-FGA) consisting of 13,056 mRNA-enriched anonymous microbial clones from diverse microbial communities to profile microbial gene transcripts. A new normalization method using internal spot standards was devised to overcome spotting and hybridization bias, enabling direct comparisons of microarrays. To evaluate potential applications of this metatranscriptomic approach for studying microbes in environmental samples, we tested the E-FGA by profiling the microbial activity of agricultural soils with a low or high flux of N2O. A total of 109 genes displayed expression that differed significantly between soils with low and high N2O emissions. We conclude that mRNA-based approaches such as the one presented here may complement existing techniques for assessing functional attributes of microbial communities. Mothers of Soldiers in Wartime: A National News Narrative
National news media represent mothers of US combat soldiers in the Iraq War as archetypal good mothers, that is, mothers who continue their maternal work even after their children are deployed. However, not all mothers are depicted as the archetypal patriotic mother, i.e., a good mother who is also stoic and silent about the war and her child\u27s role in it. Mothers of soldiers are portrayed as good mothers who sometimes also voice their attitudes about the war effort. The maternal attitudes ranged from complete support for the war to opposition to the war but support for the soldiers. The findings suggest a picture of wartime motherhood that is more nuanced than the historical image of the patriotic mother suggests
Crystal and molecular structure of series of triphilic ionic liquid-crystalline materials based on the 1,2,4-triazolium cation
Results from the determination of sixteen X-ray single crystal structures are reported for a series of 3-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-perfluoroalkyl-2,4-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolium salts with tetrafluoroborate, triflate or bistriflimide anions, in which the lengths of the alkoxy and perfluoroalkyl chains are varied systematically. On account of these cations having a hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon and ionic part, they are classified as triphilic. All of the tetrafluoroborate salts crystallised in the P2(1)/c space group, most as acetone solvates, while for the bistriflimide salts, four different space groups were found although all contained a P2(1) screw axis often with additional symmetry elements. Of the triflates, two crystallised in space groups with a P2(1) screw axis and two in P1. The organisation in the crystalline state tended to reflect the triphilic nature of the materials with cations and anions associating in repeating motifs, while the rest of the space was occupied by either hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon domains with only two exceptions
Quantum Transduction of Telecommunications-band Single Photons from a Quantum Dot by Frequency Upconversion
The ability to transduce non-classical states of light from one wavelength to
another is a requirement for integrating disparate quantum systems that take
advantage of telecommunications-band photons for optical fiber transmission of
quantum information and near-visible, stationary systems for manipulation and
storage. In addition, transducing a single-photon source at 1.3 {\mu}m to
visible wavelengths for detection would be integral to linear optical quantum
computation due to the challenges of detection in the near-infrared. Recently,
transduction at single-photon power levels has been accomplished through
frequency upconversion, but it has yet to be demonstrated for a true
single-photon source. Here, we transduce the triggered single-photon emission
of a semiconductor quantum dot at 1.3 {\mu}m to 710 nm with a total detection
(internal conversion) efficiency of 21% (75%). We demonstrate that the 710 nm
signal maintains the quantum character of the 1.3 {\mu}m signal, yielding a
photon anti-bunched second-order intensity correlation, g^(2)(t), that shows
the optical field is composed of single photons with g^(2)(0) = 0.165 < 0.5.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
kt Effects in Direct-Photon Production
We discuss the phenomenology of initial-state parton-kt broadening in
direct-photon production and related processes in hadron collisions. After a
brief summary of the theoretical basis for a Gaussian-smearing approach, we
present a systematic study of recent results on fixed-target and collider
direct-photon production, using complementary data on diphoton and pion
production to provide empirical guidance on the required amount of kt
broadening. This approach provides a consistent description of the observed
pattern of deviation of next-to-leading order QCD calculations relative to the
direct-photon data, and accounts for the shape and normalization difference
between fixed-order perturbative calculations and the data. We also discuss the
uncertainties in this phenomenological approach, the implications of these
results on the extraction of the gluon distribution of the nucleon, and the
