Convex Trace Functions on Quantum Channels and the Additivity Conjecture
We study a natural generalization of the additivity problem in quantum
information theory: given a pair of quantum channels, then what is the set of
convex trace functions that attain their maximum on unentangled inputs, if they
are applied to the corresponding output state?
We prove several results on the structure of the set of those convex
functions that are "additive" in this more general sense. In particular, we
show that all operator convex functions are additive for the Werner-Holevo
channel in 3x3 dimensions, which contains the well-known additivity results for
this channel as special cases.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. Published versio
Thermal breakdown of coherent backscattering: a case study of quantum duality
We investigate coherent backscattering of light by two harmonically trapped
atoms in the light of quantitative quantum duality. Including recoil and
Doppler shift close to an optical resonance, we calculate the interference
visibility as well as the amount of which-path information, both for zero and
finite temperature.Comment: published version with minor changes and an added figur
Geometric phases in electric dipole searches with trapped spin-1/2 particles in general fields and measurement cells of arbitrary shape with smooth or rough walls
The important role of geometric phases in searches for a permanent electric
dipole moment of the neutron, using Ramsey separated oscillatory field nuclear
magnetic resonance, was first noted by Commins and investigated in detail by
Pendlebury et al. Their analysis was based on the Bloch equations. In
subsequent work using the spin density matrix Lamoreaux and Golub showed the
relation between the frequency shifts and the correlation functions of the
fields seen by trapped particles in general fields (Redfield theory). More
recently we presented a solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for spin-
particles in circular cylindrical traps with smooth walls and exposed to
arbitrary fields [Steyerl et al.] Here we extend this work to show how the
Redfield theory follows directly from the Schr\"odinger equation solution. This
serves to highlight the conditions of validity of the Redfield theory, a
subject of considerable discussion in the literature [e.g., Nicholas et al.]
Our results can be applied where the Redfield result no longer holds, such as
observation times on the order of or shorter than the correlation time and
non-stochastic systems and thus we can illustrate the transient spin dynamics,
i.e. the gradual development of the shift with increasing time subsequent to
the start of the free precession. We consider systems with rough, diffuse
reflecting walls, cylindrical trap geometry with arbitrary cross section, and
field perturbations that do not, in the frame of the moving particles, average
to zero in time. We show by direct, detailed, calculation the agreement of the
results from the Schr\"odinger equation with the Redfield theory for the cases
of a rectangular cell with specular walls and of a circular cell with diffuse
reflecting walls.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure
Microscopic laser-driven high-energy colliders
The concept of a laser-guided collider in the high-energy regime is
presented and its feasibility discussed. Ultra-intense laser pulses and strong
static magnetic fields are employed to unite in one stage the electron and
positron acceleration and their head-on-head collision. We show that the
resulting coherent collisions in the GeV regime yield an enormous enhancement
of the luminosity with regard to conventional incoherent colliders

The Standard Quantum Limit of Coherent Beam Combining
Coherent beam combining refers to the process of generating a bright output
beam by merging independent input beams with locked relative phases. We report
the first quantum mechanical noise limit calculations for coherent beam
combining and compare our results to quantum-limited amplification. Our
coherent beam combining scheme is based on an optical Fourier transformation
which renders the scheme compatible with integrated optics. The scheme can be
layed out for an arbitrary number of input beams and approaches the shot noise
limit for a large number of inputs
SAFT-γ force field for the simulation of molecular fluids: 4. A single-site coarse-grained model of water applicable over a wide temperature range
In this work, we develop coarse-grained (CG) force fields for water, where the effective CG intermolecular interactions between particles are estimated from an accurate description of the macroscopic experimental vapour-liquid equilibria data by means of a molecular-based equation of state. The statistical associating fluid theory for Mie (generalised Lennard-Jones) potentials of variable range (SAFT-VR Mie) is used to parameterise spherically symmetrical (isotropic) force fields for water. The resulting SAFT-γ CG models are based on the Mie (8-6) form with size and energy parameters that are temperature dependent; the latter dependence is a consequence of the angle averaging of the directional polar interactions present in water. At the simplest level of CG where a water molecule is represented as a single bead, it is well known that an isotropic potential cannot be used to accurately reproduce all of the thermodynamic properties of water simultaneously. In order to address this deficiency, we propose two CG potential models of water based on a faithful description of different target properties over a wide range of temperatures: our CGW1-vle model is parameterised to match the saturated-liquid density and vapour pressure; our other CGW1-ift model is parameterised to match the saturated-liquid density and vapour-liquid interfacial tension. A higher level of CG corresponding to two water molecules per CG bead is also considered: the corresponding CGW2-bio model is developed to reproduce the saturated-liquid density and vapour-liquid interfacial tension in the physiological temperature range, and is particularly suitable for the large-scale simulation of bio-molecular systems. A critical comparison of the phase equilibrium and transport properties of the proposed force fields is made with the more traditional atomistic models
Ultracold neutron depolarization in magnetic bottles
We analyze the depolarization of ultracold neutrons confined in a magnetic
field configuration similar to those used in existing or proposed
magneto-gravitational storage experiments aiming at a precise measurement of
the neutron lifetime. We use an extension of the semi-classical Majorana
approach as well as an approximate quantum mechanical analysis, both pioneered
by Walstrom et al. [Nucl. Instr. Meth. Phys. Res. A 599, 82 (2009)]. In
contrast with this previous work we do not restrict the analysis to purely
vertical modes of neutron motion. The lateral motion is shown to cause the
predominant depolarization loss in a magnetic storage trap. The system studied
also allowed us to estimate the depolarization loss suffered by ultracold
neutrons totally reflected on a non-magnetic mirror immersed in a magnetic
field. This problem is of preeminent importance in polarized neutron decay
studies such as the measurement of the asymmetry parameter A using ultracold
neutrons, and it may limit the efficiency of ultracold neutron polarizers based
on passage through a high magnetic field.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
COMPLETE SOLUTION OF THE XXZ-MODEL ON FINITE RINGS. DYNAMICAL STRUCTURE FACTORS AT ZERO TEMPERATURE.
The finite size effects of the dynamical structure factors in the XXZ-model
are studied in the euclidean time -representation. Away from the
critical momentum finite size effects turn out to be small except for
the large limit. The large finite size effects at the critical momentum
signal the emergence of infrared singularities in the spectral
-representation of the dynamical structure factors.Comment: PostScript file with 12 pages + 11 figures uuencoded compresse
