Partially Composite Higgs in Supersymmetry
We propose a framework for natural breaking of electroweak symmetry in
supersymmetric models, where elementary Higgs fields are semi-perturbatively
coupled to a strong superconformal sector. The Higgs VEVs break conformal
symmetry in the strong sector at the TeV scale, and the strong sector in turn
gives important contributions to the Higgs potential, giving rise to a kind of
Higgs bootstrap. A Higgs with mass 125\GeV can be accommodated without any
fine tuning. A Higgsino mass of order the Higgs mass is also dynamically
generated in these models. The masses in the strong sector generically violate
custodial symmetry, and a good precision electroweak fit requires tuning of
order . The strong sector has an approximately supersymmetric
spectrum of hadrons at the TeV scale that can be observed by looking for a peak
in the invariant mass distribution, as well as final states containing
multiple , , and Higgs bosons. The models also generically predict large
corrections (either enhancement or suppression) to the h \to \ga\ga width.Comment: 31 page
The Two Faces of Anomaly Mediation
Anomaly mediation is a ubiquitous source of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking
which appears in almost every theory of supergravity. In this paper, we show
that anomaly mediation really consists of two physically distinct phenomena,
which we dub "gravitino mediation" and "Kahler mediation". Gravitino mediation
arises from minimally uplifting SUSY anti-de Sitter (AdS) space to Minkowski
space, generating soft masses proportional to the gravitino mass. Kahler
mediation arises when visible sector fields have linear couplings to SUSY
breaking in the Kahler potential, generating soft masses proportional to beta
function coefficients. In the literature, these two phenomena are lumped
together under the name "anomaly mediation", but here we demonstrate that they
can be physically disentangled by measuring associated couplings to the
goldstino. In particular, we use the example of gaugino soft masses to show
that gravitino mediation generates soft masses without corresponding goldstino
couplings. This result naively violates the goldstino equivalence theorem but
is in fact necessary for supercurrent conservation in AdS space. Since
gravitino mediation persists even when the visible sector is sequestered from
SUSY breaking, we can use the absence of goldstino couplings as an unambiguous
definition of sequestering.Comment: 21 pages, 1 table; v2, references added, extended discussion in

Spontaneous Parity Violation in SUSY Strong Gauge Theory
We suggest simple models of spontaneous parity violation in supersymmetric
strong gauge theory. We focus on left-right symmetric model and investigate
vacuum with spontaneous parity violation. Non-perturbative effects are
calculable in supersymmetric gauge theory, and we suggest two new models. The
first model shows confinement, and the second model has a dual description of
the theory. The left-right symmetry breaking and electroweak symmetry breaking
are simultaneously occurred with the suitable energy scale hierarchy. The
second model also induces spontaneous supersymmetry breaking.Comment: 14 page
The Higgs as a Probe of Supersymmetric Extra Sectors
We present a general method for calculating the leading contributions to h ->
gg and h -> gamma gamma in models where the Higgs weakly mixes with a nearly
supersymmetric extra sector. Such mixing terms can play an important role in
raising the Higgs mass relative to the value expected in the MSSM. Our method
applies even when the extra sector is strongly coupled, and moreover does not
require a microscopic Lagrangian description. Using constraints from holomorphy
we fix the leading parametric form of the contributions to these Higgs
processes, including the Higgs mixing angle dependence, up to an overall
coefficient. Moreover, when the Higgs is the sole source of mass for a
superconformal sector, we show that even this coefficient is often calculable.
For appropriate mixing angles, the contribution of the extra states to h -> gg
and h -> gamma gamma can vanish. We also discuss how current experimental
limits already lead to non-trivial constraints on such models. Finally, we
provide examples of extra sectors which satisfy the requirements necessary to
use the holomorphic approximation.Comment: v4: 34 pages, 2 figures, typo corrected and clarification adde
Minimal Conformal Technicolor and Precision Electroweak Tests
We study the minimal model of conformal technicolor, an SU(2) gauge theory
near a strongly coupled conformal fixed point, with conformal symmetry softly
broken by technifermion mass terms. Conformal symmetry breaking triggers chiral
symmetry breaking in the pattern SU(4) -> Sp(4), which gives rise to a
pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson that can act as a composite Higgs boson. The top
quark is elementary, and the top and electroweak gauge loop contributions to
the Higgs mass are cut off entirely by Higgs compositeness. In particular, the
model requires no top partners and no "little Higgs" mechanism. A nontrivial
vacuum alignment results from the interplay of the top loop and technifermion
mass terms. The composite Higgs mass is completely determined by the top loop,
in the sense that m_h/m_t is independent of the vacuum alignment and is
computable by a strong-coupling calculation. There is an additional composite
pseudoscalar A with mass larger than m_h and suppressed direct production at
LHC. We discuss the electroweak fit in this model in detail. Corrections to Z
-> bb and the T parameter from the top sector are suppressed by the enhanced
Sp(4) custodial symmetry. Even assuming that the strong contribution to the S
parameter is positive and usuppressed, a good electroweak fit can be obtained
for v/f ~ 0.25, where v and f are the electroweak and chiral symmetry breaking
scales respectively. This requires fine tuning at the 10% level.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures; v2: updated precision electroweak fi
New Solution for Neutrino Masses and Leptogenesis in Adjoint SU(5)
We investigate baryogenesis via leptogenesis and generation of neutrino
masses and mixings through the Type I plus Type III seesaw plus an one-loop
mechanism in the context of Renormalizable Adjoint SU(5) theory. One light
neutrino remains massless, because the contributions of three heavy Majorana
fermions \rho_0, \rho_3 and \rho_8 to the neutrino mass matrix are not linearly
independent. However none of these heavy fermions is decoupled from the
generation of neutrino masses. This opens a new range in parameter space for
successful leptogenesis, in particular, allows for inverted hierarchy of the
neutrino masses.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures; references added and typos fixe
Are lay people good at recognising the symptoms of schizophrenia?
©2013 Erritty, Wydell. This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the general public’s perception of schizophrenia symptoms and the need to seekhelp for symptoms. The recognition (or ‘labelling’) of schizophrenia symptoms, help-seeking behaviours and public
awareness of schizophrenia have been suggested as potentially important factors relating to untreated psychosis.
Method: Participants were asked to rate to what extent they believe vignettes describing classic symptoms (positive and
negative) of schizophrenia indicate mental illness. They were also asked if the individuals depicted in the vignettes required help or treatment and asked to suggest what kind of help or treatment.
Results: Only three positive symptoms (i.e., Hallucinatory behaviour, Unusual thought content and Suspiciousness) of schizophrenia were reasonably well perceived (above 70%) as indicating mental illness more than the other positive or negative symptoms. Even when the participants recognised that the symptoms indicated mental illness, not everyone recommended professional help.
Conclusion: There may be a need to improve public awareness of schizophrenia and psychosis symptoms, particularly regarding an awareness of the importance of early intervention for psychosis
Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the DSSM
We study the theoretical and phenomenological consequences of modifying the
Kahler potential of the MSSM two Higgs doublet sector. Such modifications
naturally arise when the Higgs sector mixes with a quasi-hidden conformal
sector, as in some F-theory GUT models. In the Delta-deformed Supersymmetric
Standard Model (DSSM), the Higgs fields are operators with non-trivial scaling
dimension 1 < Delta < 2. The Kahler metric is singular at the origin of field
space due to the presence of quasi-hidden sector states which get their mass
from the Higgs vevs. The presence of these extra states leads to the fact that
even as Delta approaches 1, the DSSM does not reduce to the MSSM. In
particular, the Higgs can naturally be heavier than the W- and Z-bosons.
Perturbative gauge coupling unification, a large top quark Yukawa, and
consistency with precision electroweak can all be maintained for Delta close to
unity. Moreover, such values of Delta can naturally be obtained in
string-motivated constructions. The quasi-hidden sector generically contains
states charged under SU(5)_GUT as well as gauge singlets, leading to a rich,
albeit model-dependent, collider phenomenology.Comment: v3: 40 pages, 3 figures, references added, typos correcte
Universal contributions to scalar masses from five dimensional supergravity
We compute the effective Kahler potential for matter fields in warped
compactifications, starting from five dimensional gauged supergravity, as a
function of the matter fields localization. We show that truncation to zero
modes is inconsistent and the tree-level exchange of the massive gravitational
multiplet is needed for consistency of the four-dimensional theory. In addition
to the standard Kahler coming from dimensional reduction, we find the quartic
correction coming from integrating out the gravity multiplet. We apply our
result to the computation of scalar masses, by assuming that the SUSY breaking
field is a bulk hypermultiplet. In the limit of extreme opposite localization
of the matter and the spurion fields, we find zero scalar masses, consistent
with sequestering arguments. Surprisingly enough, for all the other cases the
scalar masses are tachyonic. This suggests the holographic interpretation that
a CFT sector always generates operators contributing in a tachyonic way to
scalar masses. Viability of warped su- persymmetric compactifications
necessarily asks then for additional contributions. We discuss the case of
additional bulk vector multiplets with mixed boundary conditions, which is a
partic- ularly simple and attractive way to generate large positive scalar
masses. We show that in this case successful fermion mass matrices implies
highly degenerate scalar masses for the first two generations of squarks and
sleptons.Comment: 23 pages. v2: References added, new section on effect of additional

Suppressing Electroweak Precision Observables in 5D Warped Models
We elaborate on a recently proposed mechanism to suppress large contributions
to the electroweak precision observables in five dimensional (5D) warped
models, without the need for an extended 5D gauge sector. The main ingredient
is a modification of the AdS metric in the vicinity of the infrared (IR) brane
corresponding to a strong deviation from conformality in the IR of the 4D
holographic dual. We compute the general low energy effective theory of the 5D
warped Standard Model, emphasizing additional IR contributions to the wave
function renormalization of the light Higgs mode. We also derive expressions
for the S and T parameters as a function of a generic 5D metric and zero-mode
wave functions. We give an approximate formula for the mass of the radion that
works even for strong deviation from the AdS background. We proceed to work out
the details of an explicit model and derive bounds for the first KK masses of
the various bulk fields. The radion is the lightest new particle although its
mass is already at about 1/3 of the mass of the lightest resonances, the KK
states of the gauge bosons. We examine carefully various issues that can arise
for extreme choices of parameters such as the possible reintroduction of the
hierarchy problem, the onset of nonperturbative physics due to strong IR
curvature or the creation of new hierarchies near the Planck scale. We conclude
that a KK scale of 1 TeV is compatible with all these constraints.Comment: 44 pages, 11 figures, references adde
