Factors associated with postharvest ripening heterogeneity of "Hass" avocados (Persea americana Mill)
Indexación: Web of ScienceIntroduction. 'Hass' is the main avocado cultivar commercialized worldwide. The extended flowering period, very low percentage of fruit set and inability to ripen on the tree renders the fruit heterogeneous and unpredictable during postharvest management. The "triggered" and "ready-to-eat" growing markets for 'Hass' avocados are affected by the variable postharvest ripening or ripening heterogeneity which creates severe logistical problems for marketers and inconsistent quality delivery to consumers. Synthesis. The dry matter content, the current avocado harvest index that correlates very well with oil content, has been extensively used to harvest 'Hass' avocados to comply with the minimum standards to guarantee consumer satisfaction. However, previous work and empirical experience demonstrate that dry matter does not correlate on a fruit-to-fruit basis with time to reach edible ripeness. Thus, avocados of very different ages are harvested from individual trees, resulting in heterogeneous postharvest ripening of fruit within a specific batch. Several preharvest factors related to environmental and growing conditions and crop management as well as postharvest technology strategies influence the observed variability of postharvest ripening. Conclusion. Modern approaches based on studying the composition of individual fruits displaying contrasting postharvest ripening behavior, combined with non-destructive phenotyping techniques, seem to offer practical solutions for the fresh supply chain of avocados to sort fruit based on their ripening capacity.http://www.pubhort.org/fruits/2016/5/fruits160045.ht
Vacuum Properties of Mesons in a Linear Sigma Model with Vector Mesons and Global Chiral Invariance
We present a two-flavour linear sigma model with global chiral symmetry and
vector and axial-vector mesons. We calculate pion-pion scattering lengths and
the decay widths of scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. It is demonstrated
that vector and axial-vector meson degrees of freedom play an important role in
these low-energy processes and that a reasonable theoretical description
requires globally chirally invariant terms other than the vector meson mass
term. An important question for meson vacuum phenomenology is the quark content
of the physical scalar f0(600) and a0(980) mesons. We investigate this question
by assigning the quark-antiquark sigma and a0 states of our model with these
physical mesons. We show via a detailed comparison with experimental data that
this scenario can describe all vacuum properties studied here except for the
decay width of the sigma, which turns out to be too small. We also study the
alternative assignment f0(1370) and a0(1450) for the scalar mesons. In this
case the decay width agrees with the experimental value, but the pion-pion
scattering length is too small. This indicates the necessity to
extend our model by additional scalar degrees of freedom.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Electromagnetic multipole moments of elementary spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles
We study multipole decompositions of the electromagnetic currents of
spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles described in terms of Lagrangians designed to
reproduce representation specific wave equations which are second order in the
momenta and which emerge within the recently elaborated Poincar\'e covariant
projector method. We calculate the electric multipoles of the above spins for
the spinor, the four-vector, and the four-vector--spinor representations,
attend to the most general non-Lagrangian spin-3/2 currents which are allowed
by Lorentz invariance to be of third order in the momenta and construct the
linear current equivalent of identical multipole moments of one of them. We
conclude that such non-Lagrangian currents are not necessarily more general
than the two-term currents emerging within the covariant projector method. We
compare our results with those of the conventional Proca-, and Rarita-Schwinger
frameworks. Finally, we test the representation dependence of the multipoles by
placing spin-1 and spin-3/2 in the respective (1,0)(0,1), and
(3/2,0)(0,3/2) single-spin representations. We observe representation
independence of the charge monopoles and the magnetic dipoles, in contrast to
the higher multipoles, which turn out to be representation dependent. In
particular, we find the bi-vector to be characterized by an
electric quadrupole moment of opposite sign to the one found in ,
and consequently, to the boson. Our finding points toward the possibility
that the meson could transform as part of an antisymmetric tensor with
an meson-like state as its representation companion.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figure

Redefining disease emergence to improve prioritization and macro-ecological analyses
AbstractMicrobial infections are as old as the hosts they sicken, but interest in the emergence of pathogens and the diseases they cause has been accelerating rapidly. The term ‘emerging infectious disease’ was coined in the mid-1900s to describe changes in disease dynamics in the modern era. Both the term and the phenomena it is meant to characterize have evolved and diversified over time, leading to inconsistencies and confusion. Here, we review the evolution of the term ‘emerging infectious disease’ (EID) in the literature as applied to human hosts. We examine the pathways (e.g., speciation or strain differentiation in the causative agent vs. rapid geographic expansion of an existing pathogen) by which diseases emerge. We propose a new framework for disease and pathogen emergence to improve prioritization. And we illustrate how the operational definition of an EID affects conclusions concerning the pathways by which diseases emerge and the ecological and socioeconomic drivers that elicit emergence. As EIDs appear to be increasing globally, and resources for science level off or decline, the research community is pushed to prioritize its focus on the most threatening diseases, riskiest potential pathogens, and the places they occur. The working definition of emerging infectious diseases and pathogens plays a crucial role in prioritization, but we argue that the current definitions may be impeding these efforts. We propose a new framework for classifying pathogens and diseases as “emerging” that distinguishes EIDs from emerging pathogens and novel potential pathogens. We suggest prioritization of: 1) EIDs for adaptation and mitigation, 2) emerging pathogens for preventive measures, and 3) novel potential pathogens for intensive surveillance
Determinants for Successful Agile Collaboration between UX Designers and Software Developers in a Complex Organisation
Agile and User-centered design processes have been reported to frequently putting contradictory demands on people working within these methodological frameworks. The current research addresses this point by focussing on the crucial relationship between software developer and designer. An online survey, a contextual inquiry, and a diary study were employed with 107 developers and designers in a large media organization to determine the factors for success in agile development cycles. The results from the survey show that while developers and designers have similar levels of satisfaction with agile processes, there are differences in the factors predicting those ratings. Developers are happier with the wider teamwork but want more access to and close collaboration with designers, while the latters’ concern was the quality of the wider teamwork. Additional contextual inquiries and a diary study with pairs of designers and developers reflected the survey findings that close cooperation (and proximity) was essential for improving communication, reducing inefficiencies, and avoiding suboptimal products being released. However, organizational processes, the setup of the work environment, and managerial traditions meant that this close collaboration and localized decision-making was found difficult to maintain. Results from the survey, the contextual inquiry, and the diary study found six factors for success from collaborations emerged

Electromagnetic Meson Form Factors in the Salpeter Model
We present a covariant scheme to calculate mesonic transitions in the
framework of the Salpeter equation for -states. The full Bethe
Salpeter amplitudes are reconstructed from equal time amplitudes which were
obtained in a previous paper\cite{Mue} by solving the Salpeter equation for a
confining plus an instanton induced interaction. This method is applied to
calculate electromagnetic form factors and decay widths of low lying
pseudoscalar and vector mesons including predictions for CEBAF experiments. We
also describe the momentum transfer dependence for the processes

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in the -matrix inverse scattering approach and few-nucleon systems
The nucleon-nucleon interaction is constructed by means of the -matrix
version of inverse scattering theory. Ambiguities of the interaction are
eliminated by postulating tridiagonal and quasi-tridiagonal forms of the
potential matrix in the oscillator basis in uncoupled and coupled waves,
respectively. The obtained interaction is very accurate in reproducing the
scattering data and deuteron properties. The interaction is used in the no-core
shell model calculations of H and He nuclei. The resulting binding
