    Mapping the potential distribution of major tick species in China

    Ticks are known as the vectors of various zoonotic diseases such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Though their occurrences are increasingly reported in some parts of China, our understanding of the pattern and determinants of ticks’ potential distribution over the country remain limited. In this study, we took advantage of the recently compiled spatial dataset of distribution and diversity of ticks in China, analyzed the environmental determinants of ten frequently reported tick species and mapped the spatial distribution of these species over the country using the MaxEnt model. We found that presence of urban fabric, cropland, and forest in a place are key determents of tick occurrence, suggesting ticks were likely inhabited close to where people live. Besides, precipitation in the driest month was found to have a relatively high contribution in mapping tick distribution. The model projected that theses ticks could be widely distributed in the Northwest, Central North, Northeast, and South China. Our results added new evidence on the potential distribution of a variety of major tick species in China and pinpointed areas with a high potential risk of tick bites and tick-borne diseases for raising public health awareness and prevention response

    Observation of non-Hermitian antichiral edge currents

    Non-Hermitian topological photonics is of great interest in bridging topological matter with gain/dissipation engineering in optics. A key problem in this direction is the interplay between the effective gauge potential and the non-Hermiticity. Here we tackle this problem in a synthetic non-Hermitian Hall ladder and experimentally observe antichiral edge currents (ACECs) of photons, by tuning the locally uniform effective magnetic flux and the on-site gain/loss. Such ACECs provide a topological method to probe the signatures of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) from steady-state bulk dynamics. The universality of this method is verified by its generalization to three dimensions. This study paves a way to investigate exotic non-Hermitian topological physics and has potential applications in topological photonics engineering

    Self-assembly of gold nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes using a thiol-terminated pyrene as interlinker

    Abstract Gold nanoparticles were self-assembled onto the surface of solubilized carbon nanotubes through an interlinker of bi-functionalized molecule (PHT) terminated with pyrenyl unit at one end and thiol group at the other end. While the fluorescence of PHT is quenched moderately by the carbon nanotubes, the fluorescence is almost totally quenched by the further binding of gold nanoparticles. The enhancement of the Raman responses of nanotubes by the gold nanoparticles is also observed. These results imply there are charge transfer interactions between nanotubes and gold nanoparticles

    Complete chloroplast genome sequences of Dioscorea: Characterization, genomic resources, and phylogenetic analyses

    Dioscorea L., the largest genus of the family Dioscoreaceae with over 600 species, is not only an important food but also a medicinal plant. The identification and classification of Dioscorea L. is a rather difficult task. In this study, we sequenced five Dioscorea chloroplast genomes, and analyzed with four other chloroplast genomes of Dioscorea species from GenBank. The Dioscorea chloroplast genomes displayed the typical quadripartite structure of angiosperms, which consisted of a pair of inverted repeats separated by a large single-copy region, and a small single-copy region. The location and distribution of repeat sequences and microsatellites were determined, and the rapidly evolving chloroplast genome regions (trnK-trnQ, trnS-trnG, trnC-petN, trnE-trnT, petG-trnW-trnP, ndhF, trnL-rpl32, and ycf1) were detected. Phylogenetic relationships of Dioscorea inferred from chloroplast genomes obtained high support even in shortest internodes. Thus, chloroplast genome sequences provide potential molecular markers and genomic resources for phylogeny and species identification

    Concerns or Desires Post-Pandemic: An Extended MGB Model for Understanding South Korean Residents’ Perceptions and Intentions to Travel to China

    In this study, we examined South Korean residents’ travel-related behavioural intention for mainland China post-COVID-19 using an extended model of goal-directed behaviour. To do so, we integrated South Korean residents’ perceptions of country image (PCI), mass media, and concerns about travel into the framework of the original model of goal-directed behaviour (MGB). Structural equation modelling was used to identify the structural relationships among the latent variables. The results show that mass media had a positive influence on South Korean residents’ perception of China’s image, a negative influence on residents’ concerns, and a positive influence on residents’ behavioural intentions for travel overseas. Meanwhile, PCI had a positive influence on residents’ attitude towards travel overseas. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are discussed

    Topological degeneracy breaking in synthetic frequency lattice by Floquet engineering

    Synthetic frequency dimensions provide important opportunities to investigate novel topological phenomena. Previously, many theoretical proposals have been studied and relevant experiments have been performed very recently. However, all these works consider models in the weak modulation regime, where static lattice models are constructed. Here we explore a Floquet Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model with time-dependent hoppings in the frequency dimension by dynamically modulating ring resonators ultrastrongly, and find that the topological states, originally degenerate in conventional SSH lattices, are separated in eigenenergies. There exists a series of edge states from band folding at the 0 and π energy bandgaps, which exhibit complex multi-frequency oscillations due to the inclusion of counter-rotating terms with higher order oscillation frequencies. Such a system with stronger modulations can widen the bandgap and therefore it provides an effective way to localize pulses in synthetic frequency dimensions. Our work shows a photonic platform with the synthetic dimension in exploring exotic Floquet topological phenomena and shows potential applications in optical storage and communications

    Projecting the potential distribution of ticks in China under climate and land use change

    Ticks are known as vectors of several pathogens causing various human and animal diseases including Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. While China is known to have more than 100 tick species well distributed over the country, our knowledge on the likely distribution of ticks in the future remains very limited, which hinders the prevention and control of the risk of tick-borne diseases. In this study, we selected four representative tick species which have different regional distribution foci in mainland China. i.e., Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacentor silvarum, Haemaphysalis longicornis and Ixodes granulatus. We used the MaxEnt model to identify the key environmental factors of tick occurrence and map their potential distributions in 2050 under four combined climate and socioeconomic scenarios (i.e., SSP1-RCP2.6, SSP2-RCP4.5, SSP3-RCP7.0 and SSP5-RCP8.5). We found that the extent of the urban fabric, cropland and forest, temperature annual range and precipitation of the driest month were the main determinants of the potential distributions of the four tick species. Under the combined scenarios, with climate warming, the potential distributions of ticks shifted to further north in China. Due to a decrease in the extent of forest, the distribution probability of ticks declined in central and southern China. In contrast with previous findings on an estimated amplification of tick distribution probability under the extreme emission scenario (RCP8.5), our studies projected an overall reduction in the distribution probability under RCP8.5, owing to an expected effect of land use. Our results could provide new data to help identify the emerging risk areas, with amplifying suitability for tick occurrence, for the prevention and control of tick-borne zoonoses in mainland China. Future directions are suggested towards improved quantity and quality of the tick occurrence database, comprehensiveness of factors and integration of different modelling approaches, and capability to model pathogen spillover at the human-tick interface

    Triphenylamine Derived Radical Cations for Colorimetric Cu<sup>2+</sup> Sensors and as an Antibacterial Agent

    Herein, a series of triphenylamine derivatives (TPAs), which are comprised of electron donor and acceptor moieties, have been exploited as sensitive colorimetric sensors for Cu2+, operating via the formation of the corresponding organic radicals through a redox reaction in a mixed solvent system (acetonitrile/water). Further studies indicated that the Cu2+ recognition triggered organic radical cations were stable in aqueous solution, and can be used as an antibacterial agent for both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at very low concentrations (10?7 M). On comparison with light irradiated photodynamic therapy triggered radicals, the present work reveals that the direct use of radical cations of TPAs is more convenient for practical applications in killing bacteria. This work thus provides new insight into the design of sensitive colorimetric sensors and antibacterial agents

    High-fat diet-disturbed gut microbiota-colonocyte interactions contribute to dysregulating peripheral tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism

    Abstract Background Aberrant tryptophan (Trp)-kynurenine (Kyn) metabolism has been implicated in the pathogenesis of human disease. In particular, populations with long-term western-style diets are characterized by an excess of Kyn in the plasma. Host-gut microbiota interactions are dominated by diet and are essential for maintaining host metabolic homeostasis. However, the role of western diet-disturbed gut microbiota-colonocyte interactions in Trp metabolism remains to be elucidated. Results Here, 4-week-old mice were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD), representing a typical western diet, for 4 weeks, and multi-omics approaches were adopted to determine the mechanism by which HFD disrupted gut microbiota-colonocyte interplay causing serum Trp-Kyn metabolism dysfunction. Our results showed that colonocyte-microbiota interactions dominated the peripheral Kyn pathway in HFD mice. Mechanistically, persistent HFD-impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics increased colonic epithelial oxygenation and caused metabolic reprogramming in colonites to support the expansion of Proteobacteria in the colon lumen. Phylum Proteobacteria-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated colonic immune responses to upregulate the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1)-mediated Kyn pathway, leading to Trp depletion and Kyn accumulation in the circulation, which was further confirmed by transplantation of Escherichia coli (E.coli) indicator strains and colonic IDO1 depletion. Butyrate supplementation promoted mitochondrial functions in colonocytes to remodel the gut microbiota in HFD mice, consequently ameliorating serum Kyn accumulation. Conclusions Our results highlighted that HFD disrupted the peripheral Kyn pathway in a gut microbiota-dependent manner and that the continuous homeostasis of gut bacteria-colonocytes interplay played a central role in the regulation of host peripheral Trp metabolism. Meanwhile, this study provided new insights into therapies against western diet-related metabolic disorders. Video Abstrac
