Preparation of high purity copper fluoride by fluorinating copper hydroxyfluoride
Copper fluoride containing no more than 50 ppm of any contaminating element was prepared by the fluorination of copper hydroxyfluoride. The impurity content was obtained by spark source mass spectrometry. High purity copper fluoride is needed as a cathode material for high energy density batteries
Spoiled Friendships and Perverted Foods in YĆko Ogawaâs The Diving Pool
This essay analyzes YĆko Ogawaâs The Diving Pool, in which the woman characters' âimproper femininitiesâ are expressed through the rupturing of commensality. Ogawa's protagonists cause direct harm to those around them as a direct response to patriarchal norms of motherhood and child-rearing, as the novel explores how patriarchal capitalism and alienation destroy possibilities for female solidarity
Microgravity and its effects on residual motions in fluids
The primary reason for conducting many materials science experiments in space is to minimize or eliminate undesirable effects that might result owing to convective motions in fluids that are driven by buoyancy effects. Of particular concern are the low frequency accelerations caused by the Earth's gravity gradient field, spacecraft attitude motions, and atmospheric drag. In order to gain a limited understanding of the effects of these accelerations, researchers calculated the Stokes' motion of a spherical particle in a fluid for various types of spacecraft attitudes. Researchers assessed the effect of slowly rotating the experimental system relative to the spacecraft in order to reduce the rate at which the particles accumulate against the container wall
A new record of Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) on the North Island, New Zealand
The filamentous green alga Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) was recorded for the first time on the North Island of New Zealand at mokoroa Estuary, Tauranga Harbour. This species is previously known within New Zealand from only two records, both from the South Island. In Tauranga Harbour, this species was restricted to anoxic estuarine sediments where mangrove forests had been mulched, and mulchate left in situ. Percursaria percursa was found intertwined with Ulva spp. and Rhizoclonium spp. Surveys of other North and South Island estuaries suggest that this alga, although occurring as part of nuisance green algal blooms in Tauranga Harbour, has only colonized human-impacted locations, and has not yet been observed in natural' estuarine ecosystems in New Zealand. As this species was found intertwined with other mat-forming filamentous green algae, it can easily be misidentified in the field, leading to both over- and under-reporting of species occurrence
Test-Retest Reliability of the Hand Test with the Institutionalized Elderly
The Hand Test (Wagner, 1962) was administered to 50 institutionalized elderly subjects. There were 36 female and 14 male subjects with a mean age of 76.94 years and a standard deviation of 10.48 years. A list of possible subjects was initially obtained from the activity directors at each nursing home. They were instructed to list the individuals which were alert and would be cooperative. The subjects were given a brief organic screening device to eliminate those subjects of severe or moderate mental impairment. Those subjects which missed two or less questions were then administered the Hand Test. Following approximately a 35 day interval (M =34.90, SD =.30), subjects were again administered the Hand Test. The subjects were unaware that they would be administered the Hand Test twice. It was hypothesized the Hand Test variables would be significantly correlated between administrations. Results indicated that of the 24 investigated variables, 23 were significantly correlated between test administrations. These results can be attributed to the Hand Test\u27s standardized instructations for administration and scoring, it\u27s less ambiguous and complex stimulus cards, and its relatively short length. Another possible reason for the relatively high reliabilities is that the Hand Test purportedly measures aspects of the subjects personality which are closer to the surface, rather than an in-depth look, as reflected by the Rorschach, Thematic Apperception Test, and the Holtzman Inkblot Technique. The results can also be attributed to the short, rigid, and stereotypical responses given by the institutionalized elderly. The results also suggest the elderly maintain a stable personality structure, as measured by the Hand Test, over a 35 day interval. Implications of the findings are discussed and suggestions for future research in the area were made
Phylogeography of New Zealandâs coastal benthos
During the past 30 years, 42 molecular studies have been undertaken in New Zealand to examine the phylogeography of coastal benthic invertebrates and plants. Here, we identify generalities and/or patterns that have emerged from this research and consider the processes implicated in generating genetic structure within populations. Studies have used various molecular markers and examined taxonomic groups with a range of life histories and dispersal strategies. Genetic disjunctions have been identified at multiple locations, with the most frequently observed division occurring between northern and southern populations at the top of the South Island. Although upwelling has been implicated as a cause of this disjunction, oceanographic evidence is lacking and alternative hypotheses exist. A significant negative correlation between larval duration and genetic differentiation (r2 = 0.39, P < 0.001, n = 29) across all studies suggests that larval duration might be used as a proxy for dispersal potential. However, among taxa with short larval durations (<10 days) there was greater variability in genetic differentiation than among taxa with longer pelagic periods. This variability implies that when larval duration is short, other factors may determine dispersal and connectivity among populations. Although there has been little congruence between the phylogeographic data and recognised biogeographic regions, recent research has resolved population subdivision at finer spatial scales corresponding more closely with existing biogeographic classifications. The use of fast-evolving and ecologically significant molecular markers in hypothesis-driven research could further improve our ability to detect population subdivision and identify the processes structuring marine ecosystems
