Exact Tests for Two-Way Contingency Tables with Structural Zeros

    Get PDF
Fisher's exact test, named for Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher, tests contingency tables for homogeneity of proportion. This paper discusses a generalization of Fisher's exact test for the case where some of the table entries are constrained to be zero. The resulting test is useful for assessing cases where the null hypothesis of conditional multinomial distribution is suspected to be false. The test is implemented in the form of a new R package, aylmer.

Comprehension as social and intellectual practice: Rebuilding curriculum in low socioeconomic and cultural minority schools

    Get PDF
This article reframes the concept of comprehension as a social and intellectual practice. It reviews current approaches to reading instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse and low socioeconomic students, noting an emphasis on comprehension as autonomous skills. The Four Resources model (Freebody & Luke, 1990) is used to make the case for the integration of comprehension instruction with an emphasis on student cultural and community knowledge, and substantive intellectual and sociocultural content in elementary school curricula. Illustrations are drawn from research underway on the teaching of literacy in primary schools in low SES communities

On the Relative Sensitivity of Mass-sensitive Chemical Microsensors

    Get PDF
In this work, the chemical sensitivity of mass-sensitive chemical microsensors with a uniform layer sandwich structure vibrating in their lateral or in-plane flexural modes is investigated. It is experimentally verified that the relative chemical sensitivity of such resonant microsensors is -to a first order- independent of the microstructure\u27s in-plane dimensions and the flexural eigenmode used, and only depends on the layer thicknesses and densities as well as the sorption properties of the sensing film. Important implications for the design of mass-sensitive chemical microsensors are discussed, whereby the designer can focus on the layer stack to optimize the chemical sensitivity and on the in-plane dimensions and mode shape to optimize the resonator\u27s frequency stability
