Litigation and Settlement: New Evidence from Labor Courts in Mexico
Using a newly assembled data set on procedures filed in Mexican labor tribunals, we study the determinants of final awards to workers. On average, workers recover less than 30% of their claim. Our strongest result is that workers receive higher percentages of their claims in settlements than in trial judgments. We also find that cases with multiple claimants against a single firm are less likely to be settled, which partially explains why workers involved in these procedures receive lower percentages of their claims. Finally, we find evidence that a worker who exaggerates her claim is less likely to settle.

Presence of stratospheric humidity in the ozone column depletion on the west coast of South America
The ozone column depletion over the western coast of South America has been previously explained, based on the existence of winds in the area of the depletion, which cause compression and thinning of the ozone layer. However, the presence of humidity and methane transported by these winds to the stratosphere where the ozone depletion is present gives evidence that these compounds also participate
in the depletion of the ozone layer. These two compounds, humidity and methane, are analysed during the ozone depletion of January, 1998. It is observed that when humidity presents fluctuations, ozone has fluctuations too. A maximum of humidity corresponds to a minimum of ozone, but there is a shift in altitude between them. This shift is observed in the stratosphere and upper troposphere and
corresponds to approximately 500 m. It is important to point out that during this event El NiËœno was present and the sources of methane are the Amazon forest and the Pacific Ocean. The data for this study was obtained from NASA and HALOE
Matrix Assisted Formation of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles in a Siloxane/Poly(Oxyethylene) Nanohybrid
Matrix-assisted formation of ferrihydrite, an iron oxide hydroxide analogue
of the protein ferritin-core, in a sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid is
reported. The hybrid network (named di-ureasil) is composed of
poly(oxyethylene) chains of different average polymer molecular weights grafted
to siloxane domains by means of urea cross-linkages and accommodates
ferrihydrite nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements, Fourier transform infrared
and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveal that the controlled
modification of the polymer molecular weight allows the fine-tuning of the
ability of the hybrid matrix to assist and promote iron coordination at the
organic-inorganic interface and subsequent nucleation and growth of the
ferrihydrite nanoparticles whose core size (2-4 nm) is tuned by the amount of
iron incorporated. The polymer chain length, its arrangement and crystallinity,
