    Three-dimensional characterization of pores in Ti-6Al-4V alloy

    The direct three-dimensional characterization of opaque materials through serial sectioning makes possible to visualize and better quantify a material microstructure, using classical metallographic techniques coupled with computer-aided reconstruction. Titanium alloys are used as biomaterials for bone implants because of its excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy (in wt. (%)) with porous microstructure permits the ingrowths of new-bone tissues improving the fixation bone/implant. This is important to understand connectivity, morphology and spatial distribution of pores in microstructure. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy compacts were produced by powder metallurgy and sintered at three distinct temperatures (1250, 1400 and 1500 °C) to obtain distinct microstructures in terms of residual porosity. The visualization of the reconstructed 3D microstructure provides a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the porosity of Ti6Al4V alloy (volume fraction and pore morphology)

    Study of a Conical Plasma Jet with a Cloth-Covered Nozzle for Polymer Treatment

    Although atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have been widely employed for materials modification, they have some drawbacks, such as the small treatment area (couple of cm2). To overcome this limitation, a funnel-like APPJ with a wide exit has been proposed. In this work, a gas-permeable cotton cloth covered the nozzle of the device to improve the gas flow dynamics and increase its range of operation. The funnel jet was flushed with Ar, and the plasma was ignited in a wide range of gas flow rates and the gap distances between the exit nozzle and the sample holder. The device characterization included electric measurements and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). To evaluate the size of the treatment and the degree of surface modification, large samples of high-density polyethylene (PE) were exposed to plasma for 5 min. Afterward, the samples were analyzed via water contact angle WCA measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that surface modification occurs simultaneously on the top and bottom faces of the samples. However, the treatment incorporated different functional groups on each side

    Silicon carbide surface modification by nitrogen plasma expander

    Silicon carbide (SiC) has been employed in many different fields such as ballistic armor, thermal coating, high performance mirror substrate, semiconductors devices, among other things. Plasma application over the silicon carbide ceramics is relatively recent and it is able to promote relevant superficial modifications. Plasma expander was used in this work which was supplied by nitrogen and switched by a capacitor bank. Nitrogen plasma was applied over ceramic samples for 20 minutes, in a total medium of 1440 plasma pulses. SiC ceramics were produced by uniaxial pressing method (40 MPa) associated to isostatic pressing (300 MPa) and sintered at 1950 degrees C under argon gas atmosphere. Silicon carbide (beta-sic - BF-12) supplied by HC-Starck and sintering additive (7.6% YAG - Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) were used in order to obtain the ceramics. Before and after the plasma application, the samples were characterized by SEM, AFM, contact angle and surface energy measurement
