    Hurst Coefficient in long time series of population size: Model for two plant populations with different reproductive strategies

    Can the fractal dimension of fluctuations in population size be used to estimate extinction risk? The problem with estimating this fractal dimension is that the lengths of the time series are usually too short for conclusive results. This study answered this question with long time series data obtained from an iterative competition model. This model produces competitive extinction at different perturbation intensities for two different germination strategies: germination of all seeds vs. dormancy in half the seeds. This provided long time series of 900 years and different extinction risks. The results support the hypothesis for the effectiveness of the Hurst coefficient for estimating extinction risk

    Techno-economic evaluation on a hybrid technology for low hydrogen concentration separation and purification from natural gas grid

    Hydrogen can be stored and distributed by injecting into existing natural grids, then, at the user site separated and used in different applications. The conventional technology for hydrogen separation is pressure swing adsorption (PSA). The recent NREL study showed the extraction cost for separating hydrogen from a 10% H2 stream with a recovery of 80% is around 3.3–8.3 US$/kg. In this document, new system configurations for low hydrogen concentration separation from the natural gas grid by combining novel membrane-based hybrid technologies will be described in detail. The focus of the manuscript will be on the description of different configurations for the direct hydrogen separation, which comprises a membrane module, a vacuum pump and an electrochemical hydrogen compressor. These technological combinations bring substantial synergy effect of one-another while improving the total hydrogen recovery, purity and total cost of hydrogen. Simulation has been carried out for 17 different configurations; according to the results, a configuration of two-stage membrane modules (in series) with a vacuum pump and an electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) shows highest hydrogen purity (99.9997%) for 25 kg/day of hydrogen production for low-pressure grid. However, this configuration shows a higher electric consumption (configuration B) due to the additional mechanical compressor between the two-stage membrane modules and the EHC. Whereas, when the compressor is excluded, and a double skin Pd membrane (PdDS) module is used in a single-stage while connected to a vacuum pump (configuration A5), the hydrogen purity (99.92%) slightly decreases yet the power consumption considerably improves (1.53 times lower). Besides to these two complementary configurations, the combination of a single membrane module, a vacuum pump and the electrochemical compressor has been also carried out (configuration A) and results show that relatively higher purity can be achieved. Based on four master configurations, this document presents a different novel hybrid system by integrating two to three technologies for hydrogen purification combined in a way that enhances the strengths of each of them.This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 700355.     Amyloid β peptides modify the expression of antioxidant repair enzymes and a potassium channel in the septohippocampal system

    Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative brain disorder characterized by extracellular accumulations of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides, intracellular accumulation of abnormal proteins, and early loss of basal forebrain neurons. Recent studies have indicated that the conformation of Aβ is crucial for neuronal toxicity, with intermediate misfolded forms such as oligomers being more toxic than the final fibrillar forms. Our previous work shows that Aβ blocks the potassium (K(+)) currents IM and IA in septal neurons, increasing firing rates, diminishing rhythmicity and firing coherence. Evidence also suggests that oxidative stress (OS) plays a role in AD pathogenesis. Thus we wished to determine the effect of oligomeric and fibrillar forms of Aβ₁₋₄₂ on septohippocampal damage, oxidative damage, and dysfunction in AD. Oligomeric and fibrillar forms of Aβ₁₋₄₂ were injected into the CA1 region of the hippocampus in live rats. The rats were sacrificed 24 hours and 1 month after Aβ or sham injection to additionally evaluate the temporal effects. The expression levels of the K(+) voltage-gated channel, KQT-like subfamily, member 2 (KCNQ₂) and the OS-related genes superoxide dismutase 1, 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase, and monamine oxidase A, were analyzed in the hippocampus, medial, and lateral septum. Our results show that both forms of Aβ exhibit time-dependent differential modulation of OS and K(+) channel genes in the analyzed regions. Importantly, we demonstrate that Aβ injected into the hippocampus triggered changes in gene expression in anatomical regions distant from the injection site. Thus the Aβ effect was transmitted to anatomically separate sites, because of the functional coupling of the brain structures

    Multiple and Precessing Collimated Outflows in the Planetary Nebula IC 4634

    With its remarkable double-S shape, IC 4634 is an archetype of point-symmetric planetary nebulae (PN). In this paper, we present a detailed study of this PN using archival HST WFPC2 and ground-based narrow-band images to investigate its morphology, and long-slit spectroscopic observations to determine its kinematics and to derive its physical conditions and excitation. The data reveal new structural components, including a distant string of knots distributed along an arc-like feature 40"-60" from the center of the nebula, a skin of enhanced [O III]/H-alpha ratio enveloping the inner shell and the double-S feature, and a triple-shell structure. The spatio-kinematical study also finds an equatorial component of the main nebula that is kinematically independent from the bright inner S-shaped arc. We have investigated in detail the bow shock-like features in IC 4634 and found that their morphological, kinematical and emission properties are consistent with the interaction of a collimated outflow with surrounding material. Indeed, the morphology and kinematics of some of these features can be interpreted using a 3D numerical simulation of a collimated outflow precessing at a moderate, time-dependent velocity. Apparently, IC 4634 has experienced several episodes of point-symmetric ejections oriented at different directions with the outer S-shaped feature being related to an earlier point-symmetric ejection and the outermost arc-like string of knots being the relic of an even much earlier point-symmetric ejection. There is tantalizing evidence that the action of these collimated outflows has also taken part in the shaping of the innermost shell and inner S-shaped arc of IC 4634.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibits many of the hallmarks of an inflammatory autoimmune disorder including breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the recruitment of lymphocytes, microglia, and macrophages to lesion sites, the presence of multiple lesions, generally being more pronounced in the brain stem and spinal cord, the predominantly perivascular location of lesions, the temporal maturation of lesions from inflammation through demyelination, to gliosis and partial remyelination, and the presence of immunoglobulin in the central nervous system and cerebrospinal fluid. Lymphocytes activated in the periphery infiltrate the central nervous system to trigger a local immune response that ultimately damages myelin and axons. Pro-inflammatory cytokines amplify the inflammatory cascade by compromising the BBB, recruiting immune cells from the periphery, and activating resident microglia. inflammation-associated oxidative burst in activated microglia and macrophages plays an important role in the demyelination and free radical-mediated tissue injury in the pathogenesis of MS. The inflammatory environment in demyelinating lesions leads to the generation of oxygen- and nitrogen-free radicals as well as proinflammatory cytokines which contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Inflammation can lead to oxidative stress and vice versa. Thus, oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in a self-perpetuating cycle

    El Petróleo en el Pensamiento Socioeconómico Venezolano: Una visión de la Siembra del Petróleo en el siglo XX

    El petróleo es un tema apasionante de la historia contemporánea de Venezuela, por ser definitorio de la estructura del Estado moderno y haber tenido, al mismo tiempo, un impacto fundamental en la formación del pensamiento económico nacional. Sin embargo, no toda su influencia ha sido positiva. El petróleo en la economía venezolana también ha servido para distorsionar en cierto grado la mentalidad política y su accionar social. Esa distorsión se centra por un patrón rentista sobre las bases del derecho regalista surgido desde la colonia. Expresión de estas afirmaciones es el pensamiento económico desarrollado por Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo, que es referencia obligada para los estudiosos de la materia petrolera en Venezuela y el mundo. Así, este ensayo analizó el pensamiento que en materia petrolera desarrolló Pérez Alfonso en obra más importante: Hundiéndonos en el Excremento del Diablo Pérez Alfonzo (1975). Se concluye que el pensamiento económico venezolano en materia petrolera tiene un alto contenido político y gira en torno al nacionalismo económico heredado desde las actuaciones de Simón Bolívar, cuyas raíces se encuentran en el derecho colonial español. La manifestación de ese pensamiento es la idea de estatización de empresas productivas, la realización de grandes obras públicas, uso extendido del gasto y la deuda pública y una amplia regulación en materia económica
