One-minute integrated rainfall rate statistics from a rain gauge network in Colombia: Accuracy of prediction methods

    Get PDF
Reliable rainfall rate complementary cumulative distributions are critical for the design of microwave communications systems operating above around 8 GHz. This Letter presents the results of the analysis of more than 5 years of 1-minute integrated rainfall accumulation data for 12 stations. This new dataset will prove useful considering the sharing analyses that must be executed for IMT services in the 24.25-27.5, 37-43.5, 45.5-47, 47.2-48.2 and 66-71 GHz spectrum bands. The resulting statistics can complement the entries in the database of ITU-R Study Group 3 for the region

Comparison of Integrated Digital Radiometer with Concurrent Water Vapor Radiometer using the Alphasat Receivers in Milan, Italy

In June 2014, NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) and the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) jointly deployed a pair of coherent 20 GHz and 40 GHz beacon receivers to the POLIMI campus in Milan, Italy to characterize the atmospheric channel at Ka- and Q-band within the framework of the Alphasat experiment. The Milan receivers observe the continuous-wave beacons broadcast over Europe by the Aldo Paraboni Technology Demonstration Payload (TDP #5), and, in September 2017, both channels were upgraded to incorporate a novel digital radiometer (DR) measurement which NASA has recently employed in other propagation measurement campaigns. In November 2016, a co-located water vapor radiometer (WVR) was also installed at POLIMI, and the concurrent data from both the WVR and DR thusly enables validation of this new DR technique against the established WVR. Herein, we preliminarily investigate the calibration of the DR measurements using the WVR data and also assess a calibration method that may be implemented where WVR data is not readily available

    Morphogenesis of post-Golgi transport carriers

The trans-Golgi network (TGN) is one of the main, if not the main, sorting stations in the process of intracellular protein trafficking. It is therefore of central importance to understand how the key players in the TGN-based sorting and delivery process, the post-Golgi carriers (PGCs), form and function. Over the last few years, modern morphological approaches have generated new insights into the questions of PGC biogenesis, structure and dynamics. Here, we present a view by which the “lifecycle” of a PGC consists of several distinct stages: the formation of TGN tubular export domains (where different cargoes are segregated from each other and from the Golgi enzymes); the docking of these tubular domains onto molecular motors and their extrusion towards the cell periphery along microtubules; the fission of the forming PGC from the donor membrane; and the delivery of the newly formed PGC to its specific acceptor organelle. It is now important to add the many molecular machineries that have been described as operating at the TGN to this “morphofunctional map” of the TGN export process

Genomic and transcriptomic comparison between Staphylococcus aureus strains associated with high and low within herd prevalence of intra-mammary infection

Background: Staphylococcus aureus (Staph. aureus) is one of the major pathogens causing mastitis in dairy ruminants worldwide. The chronic nature of Staph. aureus infection enhances the contagiousness risk and diffusion in herds. In order to identify the factors involved in intra-mammary infection (IMI) and diffusion in dairy cows, we investigated the molecular characteristics of two groups of Staph. aureus strains belonging to ST8 and ST398, differing in clinical properties, through comparison of whole genome and whole transcriptome sequencing. Results: The two groups of strains, one originated from high IMI prevalence herds and the other from low IMI prevalence herds, present a peculiar set of genes and polymorphisms related to phenotypic features, such as bacterial invasion of mammary epithelial cells and host adaptation. Transcriptomic analysis supports the high propensity of ST8 strain to chronicity of infection and to a higher potential cytotoxicity. Conclusions: Our data are consistent with the invasiveness and host adaptation feature for the strains GTB/ST8 associated to high within-herd prevalence of mastitis. Variation in genes coding for surface exposed proteins and those associated to virulence and defence could constitute good targets for further research

Time-Transfer and Clock-Synchronization Technique for Microsatellites in the Lunar Region

The growing number of scientific and commercial missions to the Moon surface poses the need for a dedicated communication and navigation infrastructure. A precise Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) service is a key technology to allow lunar assets to determine their position and velocity, to plan and execute maneuvers and to maintain time. Argotec is working on ANDROMEDA, an end-to-end Communication and Navigation service for users on the Moon surface and in Low Lunar Orbit, based on a constellation of 24 microsatellites operating in high-elliptical frozen orbits around the Moon. To support missions with Communication and Navigation capabilities, an accurate on-board frequency reference and a time-transfer technique are crucial technologies. This paper presents a trade-off analysis of different time-transfer techniques, including existing GNSS, Two-Way Pseudo-Noise ranging, Network Time Protocol, Two Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer and Optical links. Furthermore, an additional investigation on crucial constraints on microsatellites' design is performed with the goal of choosing the most suitable time-transfer technique and frequency reference for a microsatellite platform. A Two-Way coherent time transfer technique compatible with Consultive Committee for Space Data System (CCSDS) standards is studied and proposed. Special attention is given to synchronization accuracy, which is one of the most critical requirements for the navigation service. The choice of the technique has been supported by a trade-off analysis on the frequency reference to be adopted on board. Parameters such as Size, Weight and Power consumption (SWAP) have been taken into account in this phase, as well as costs and ground effort, paying particular attention to low-SWAP solutions. Finally, an error budget assessment is carried out considering free space propagation losses, relativistic effects, ephemeris errors, synchronization errors, and Earth's atmosphere contribution such as ionospheric and tropospheric delay
