Nanoscale domains in ionic liquids: A statistical mechanics definition for molecular dynamics studies
One of the many open questions concerning Ionic Liquids (ILs) is the
existence of nanoscale supramolecular domains which characterize the bulk. The
hypothesis of their existence does not meet a general consensus since their
definition seems to be based on ad hoc arbitrary criteria rather than on
general and solid first principles of physics. In this work, we propose a
suitable definition of supramolecular domains based on first principles of
statistical mechanics. Such principles can be realized through the application
of a recently developed computational tool which employs adaptive molecular
resolution. The method can identify the smallest region of a liquid for which
the atomistic details are strictly required, while the exterior plays the role
of a generic structureless thermodynamic reservoir. We consider four different
imidazolium-based ILs and show that indeed one can quantitatively represent the
liquid as a collection of atomistically self-contained nanodroplets embedded in
a generic thermodynamic bath. Such nanodroplets express a characteristic length

Line Integral Solution of Hamiltonian Systems with Holonomic Constraints
In this paper, we propose a second-order energy-conserving approximation
procedure for Hamiltonian systems with holonomic constraints. The derivation of
the procedure relies on the use of the so-called line integral framework. We

What Determines Firm Size?
Motivated by theories of the firm, which we classify as technological' or organizational,' we analyze the determinants of firm size across industries and across countries in a sample of 15 European countries. We find that, on average, firms facing larger markets are larger. At the industry level, we find firms in the utility sector are large, perhaps because they enjoy a natural, or officially sanctioned, monopoly. Capital intensive industries, high wage industries, and industries that do a lot of R&D have larger firms, as do industries that require little external financing. At the country level, the most salient findings are that countries with efficient judicial systems have larger firms, and, correcting for institutional development, there is little evidence that richer countries have larger firms. Interestingly, institutional development, such as greater judicial efficiency, seems to be correlated with lower dispersion in firm size within an industry. The effects of interactions (between an industry's characteristics and a country's environment) on size are perhaps the most novel results in the paper, and are best able to discriminate between theories. As the judicial system improves, the difference in size between firms in capital intensive industries and firms in industries that use little physical capital diminishes, a finding consistent with size of firms in industries dependent on external finance is larger in countries with better financial markets, suggesting that financial constraints limit average firm size.
Mass corrections in string theory and lattice field theory
Kaluza-Klein compactifications of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theories
contain a number of four dimensional scalars corresponding to the internal
components of the gauge field. While at tree-level the scalar zero modes are
massless, it is well known that quantum corrections make them massive. We
compute these radiative corrections at 1-loop in an effective field theory
framework, using the background field method and proper Schwinger-time
regularization. In order to clarify the proper treatment of the sum over
KK--modes in the effective field theory approach, we consider the same problem
in two different UV completions of Yang-Mills: string theory and lattice field
theory. In both cases, when the compactification radius is much bigger than
the scale of the UV completion (), we recover a mass
renormalization that is independent of the UV scale and agrees with the one
derived in the effective field theory approach. These results support the idea
that the value of the mass corrections is, in this regime, universal for any UV
completion that respects locality and gauge invariance. The string analysis
suggests that this property holds also at higher loops. The lattice analysis
suggests that the mass of the adjoint scalars appearing in
Super Yang-Mills is highly suppressed due to an interplay between the
higher-dimensional gauge invariance and the degeneracy of bosonic and fermionic

Waterborne GPR survey for estimating bottom-sediment variability: A survey on the Po River, Turin, Italy
We conducted an integrated geophysical survey on a stretch of the river Po in order to check the GPR ability to discriminate the variability of riverbed sediments through an analysis of the bottom reflection amplitudes. We conducted continuous profiles with a 200-MHzGPR system and a handheld broadband EM sensor.Aconductivity meter and a TDR provided punctual measurements of water conductivity, permittivity, and temperature. The processing and interpretation of the GEM-2 and GPR data were enhanced by reciprocal results and by integration with the punctual measurements of the EM properties of the water. We used a processing flow that improved the radargram images and preserved the amplitude ratios among the different profiles and the frequency content at the bottom reflection signal.We derived the water attenuation coefficient both from the punctual measurements using the Maxwell formulas and from the interpretation of the GPR data, finding an optimal matching between the two values. The GPR measurements provided maps of the bathymetry and of the bottom reflection amplitude. The high reflectivity of the riverbed, derived from the GPR interpretation, agreed with the results of the direct sampling campaign that followed the geophysical survey. The variability of the bottom-reflection-amplitudes map, which was not confirmed by the direct sampling, could also have been caused by scattering phenomena due to the riverbed clasts which are dimensionally comparable to the wavelength of the radar pulse
Clinical survey of neurosensory side-effects of mandibular parasymphyseal bone harvesting
The aim of the present survey was to assess neurosensory disturbances and/or tooth-pulp sensitivity losses after mandibular parasymphyseal bone-harvesting procedures. Twenty-eight harvesting areas in 16 patients were surveyed. Mucosal and skin sensitivity of the chin/lower lip, divided into four regions, were determined via Pointed-Blunt and Two-Point-Discrimination Tests. Pulp sensitivity of the mandibular teeth from the left second bicuspid to the right second bicuspid was tested by cold vitality preoperatively and 12 months postoperatively. Teeth were grouped according to sensitivity alterations and distance from the harvesting defects, as measured on CT scans, and statistically significant differences sought. At 12 months, 29% of preoperatively vital cuspids overlying the harvesting defects revealed pulp-sensitivity losses; no patient reported anaesthesia or analgesia; hypoaesthesia was present in 4% (8 sites; 2 patients), hypoalgesia was present in 3% (5 sites; 2 patients) and Two-Point-Discrimination Tests yielded pathologic responses in 5% of tested areas (10 sites; 4 patients). Teeth with and without pulp sensitivity changes were statistically indistinguishable regarding distances between root apices or mental foramen and the harvesting defect. The loss of pulp sensitivity in any tooth cannot be predicted simply on the basis of the distance between its apex and the harvesting osteotomy line
Evocative gene-environment correlation between genetic risk for schizophrenia and bullying victimization
Bullying exposure concerns over 10% of adolescents in Europe. Moreover, bullying victimization is heritable and victims are liable to psychotic symptoms, partly because of shared heritability with psychosis. The genetic component of bullying victimization has been proposed to involve the social reactions elicited by victims – a mechanism called “evocative gene-environment correlation”.
We hypothesized that genetic risk for schizophrenia, a heritable disease also associated with social stress during childhood and adolescence, is related with social experiences during adolescence and is involved in the risk of developing psychotic symptoms. We studied 908 individuals of the TRAILS sample and found that 13-14-year-old adolescents with greater genetic risk for schizophrenia are more exposed to bullying assessed via peer nomination scores than their peers with lower genetic risk. Importantly, bullying victimization mediated the path from genetic risk to the frequency of psychotic symptoms about three years later. These findings provide evidence of a previously unreported form of gene-environment interplay that may be a mechanism of risk for psychosis and schizophrenia. To the extent that genetic risk translation into clinical symptoms is mediated by environmental risk factors, this evidence supports mental health prevention aimed at antagonizing bullying victimization in vulnerable individuals

Il materialismo storico (nella rilettura critica operata dalla Scuola di Francoforte, più tarda) fa da filo conduttore, con lo scopo di collegare questo tema allo strutturalismo ed al pragmatismo/funzionalismo. Un itinerario scientifico e filosofico (sulla non-neutralità della scienza), come pure letterario ed artistico (che spazia nel mondo della cultura, in primis, debolmente pro e contro il metodo) è ripercorso con la intenzione di metterne in evidenza tappe importanti. In parallelo, qualche curiosità matematica arricchisce il testo, tenendo conto che il lavoro non ha pretese filosofiche, né verte sui fondamenti teorici della scienza, ma vuole invece rileggere il vasto settore della Geomatica, inserendolo in un ambito tecnico, scientifico e culturale più largo. Infatti una disciplina tecnica che non sappia aprirsi, nel campo delle scienze ed al mondo della cultura, è destinata a scomparire (e poco importa se per la propria anossia o per una diaspora, provocata da altri)
Three-way ordinal non symmetrical correspondence analysis for the evaluation of the patient satisfaction
In some recent articles, emphasis has been given to the partition of the Goodman-Kruskal’s tau index using orthogonal polynomials for the study of the non symmetrical relations in three-way contingency tables. New graphical techniques that consider such a partition and allow for the analysis of asymmetric relationships have been proposed, including three-way ordinal non symmetrical correspondence analysis (Simonetti, 2003). Such a procedure takes into account the presence of an ordinal predictor and response variables. In this paper we demonstrate the applicability of such a technique for the patient satisfaction evaluation
Relativistic mechanics of Casimir apparatuses in a weak gravitational field
This paper derives a set of general relativistic Cardinal Equations for the
equilibrium of an extended body in a uniform gravitational field. These
equations are essential for a proper understanding of the mechanics of
suspended relativistic systems. As an example, the prototypical case of a
suspended vessel filled with radiation is discussed. The mechanics of Casimir
apparatuses at rest in the gravitational field of the Earth is then considered.
Starting from an expression for the Casimir energy-momentum tensor in a weak
gravitational field recently derived by the authors, it is here shown that, in
the case of a rigid cavity supported by a stiff mount, the weight of the
Casimir energy stored in the cavity corresponds to a gravitational mass
, in agreement with the covariant conservation law of the
regularized energy-momentum tensor. The case of a cavity consisting of two
disconnected plates supported by separate mounts, where the two measured forces
