    A Note on the Algebra of Operations for Hopf Cohomology at Odd Primes

    Let pp be any prime, and let B(p){\mathcal B}(p) be the algebra of operations on the cohomology ring of any cocommutative Fp\mathbb{F}_p-Hopf algebra. In this paper we show that when pp is odd (and unlike the p=2p=2 case), B(p){\mathcal B}(p) cannot become an object in the Singer category of Fp\mathbb{F}_p-algebras with coproducts, if we require that coproducts act on the generators of B(p){\mathcal B}(p) coherently with their nature of cohomology operation

    Systematic and biostratigraphic significance of a chinchillid rodent from the Pliocene of eastern Argentina

    Two species of chinchillid rodents, Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) incisus and “Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) spicatus”, have been recorded from the Monte Hermoso Formation (Montehermosan–Lower Chapadmalalan, Early Pliocene) of southern Buenos Aires Province, eastern Argentina. L. (L.) incisus is based on skull remains,while “L. (L.) spicatus” is based on mandible remains and fragmentary skulls. Detailed study of specimens recovered from the upper section of the Monte Hermoso Formation, from the Irene “Formation”, and the Chapadmalal Formation (late Early–early Late Pliocene, Buenos Aires Province), some of them represented by associated skull and mandible remains, indicates that L. (L.) incisus and “L. (L.) spicatus” are synonymous, with the valid name being L. (L.) incisus. The differences between both nominal species are here attributed to different ontogenetic states and sexual dimorphism. The stratigraphic provenance of the fossil material of L. (L.) incisus indicates a temporal distribution of this species restricted to the Montehermosan?–Chapadmalalan (Early–early Late Pliocene), instead of the Montehermosan (Early Pliocene).Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Tooth morphology of Echimyidae (Rodentia, Caviomorpha): homology assessments, fossils, and evolution

    Echimyidae constitute the most important radiation of caviomorph rodents in the Neotropical region, represented by 20 extant genera and several extinct species. Both in extant and fossil forms, this diversity is reflected by a significant morphological variation found in crown structures of the cheek teeth. Different hypotheses of primary homology have been proposed for these structures, which, in turn, support diverse dental evolutionary hypotheses. In this contribution we inspect the main structures (cusps and lophids) of the lower deciduous teeth and molars in extinct and extant Echimyidae, and establish their topological correspondences. Comparisons with cusps and lophids of Erethizontidae are emphasized. We explore the testing of alternative primary hypotheses of lophid correspondences in a cladistic context. Following a 'dynamic' approach, we select the hypothesis of primary homology, which produced the more parsimonious results, and evaluate the evolutionary transformations of the dental characters analysed. In this context, the phylogenetic relationships of living Myocastor coypus (Molina, 1782) with the extinct Tramyocastor and Paramyocastor are tested. Our results indicate that pentalophodonty is the derived condition for the lower molars in Echimyidae, that trilophodonty evolved independently at least three times during the evolutionary history of these rodents, and that tetralophodonty represents the plesiomorphic condition. This study shows that dental evolution in echimyids can be better understood when occlusal structures are expressed as reliably comparable characters, and when fossils are taken into account.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Measuring Age-Friendly Housing: A Framework

    An ageing population raises the question of providing adequate housing that enables older people to age in place without losing autonomy and independence. Except for the issue of accessibility, no framework exists that specifically outlines a standard to achieve and, as a result, interventions on existing or on new buildings may be inconsistent without leading to a desired rise in living standards. This research addresses this issue by presenting a framework for the assessment of the age-appropriateness of housing through a number of metrics that detect and identify physical and non-physical features of a home environment to enable ageing in place. The study combines data from a qualitative systematic literature review of 93 papers and qualitative data from structured interviews with four experts in the field. As a result, 71 metrics were identified, divided into eight main domains, to describe the framework. This paper provides an improved understanding of the housing features that enable ageing in place. The tool categorizes and rates qualitative and quantitative aspects that contribute to the age-friendliness of housing, resulting in an easy to adopt assessment framework. This is a valuable means for stakeholders engaged in improving the current housing stock or in constructing new buildings for older people

    Este artigo apresenta a transculturalidade como uma proposta possível à cultura surda por se tratar de uma cultura de minoria que encontra muita resistência, e, ao mesmo tempo, cria algumas barreiras em relação ao outro. Na contemporaneidade é comum utilizarmos o multiculturalismo como o reconhecimento da existência de várias culturas diferentes. Mas, cada uma no seu espaço. Sem atravessamentos. Notamos que a cultura surda contempla o pensamento multicultural. No entanto, o discurso do “nós” x “eles” encontra-se presente. Por isso, a proposta da transculturalidade vem trazer fluidez e movimento para o cenário que vivemos de globalização e de interação social

    Inclusion of cocoa by-product in the diet of dairy sheep: Effect on the fatty acid profile of ruminal content and on the composition of milk and cheese.

    Abstract In this study, we hypothesized that dietary cocoa bean shell (CBS) as a partial replacer of human edible cereal grains in the diet of lactating ewes may affect performance and milk and cheese composition. Twenty Comisana lactating ewes allotted into control (CTRL; n = 10) or cocoa (CBS; n = 10) group received alfalfa hay ad libitum and 800 g of conventional (CTRL) or experimental (CBS) concentrate containing 11.7% CBS to partially replace corn and barley of the CTRL concentrate. Milk yield and composition did not differ between groups, and only urea concentration was lower in CBS milk. Dietary CBS increased cheese fat and reduced protein percentage in CBS group. Fatty acid composition of rumen content partially reflected that of the ingested diet, with total saturated fatty acids (SFA), total monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), 16:0, 18:0 and 18:1c9 greater in the CBS group. Moreover, all the identified trans- and cis-18:1 isomers were greater in CBS rumen content. Milk and cheese showed a similar fatty acid composition. Total MUFAs were greater in milk and cheese of CBS, mainly due to the proportion of 18:1c9, and conversely, total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), PUFAn-6 and PUFAn-6-to-PUFAn-3 ratio was greater in CTRL group. Concluding, the inclusion of CBS in the diet of lactating ewes within the limit imposed by the current legislation did not cause detrimental effects on animal performance and milk composition. Interestingly, dietary CBS reduced milk urea concentration probably due to the phenols contained in CBS concentrate. However, our results support that biohydrogenation was weakly impaired by dietary CBS. Finally, CBS negatively affected cheese nutritional characteristics due to lower protein and greater fat content, but improved fat health indexes in milk and cheese

    Construcción de curvas de fragilidad por análisis de riesgo de una estructura metálica de izaje mediante simulaciones numéricas

    En este trabajo se modela numéricamente una estructura metálica de izaje empleada para la carga y descarga de varillas de bombeo, tuberías de producción y barras de perforación utilizadas en la industria de gas y petróleo. Se toma un diseño estructural típico, fabricado in situ al momento de realizar dichas tareas. Teniendo en cuenta los distintos puntos críticos y las principales discontinuidades que se generan en los cordones de soldadura presentes en la estructura, se realiza un modelado de los cordones, perfecto y con imperfecciones utilizando elementos finitos hexaédricos y tetraédricos. A partir de los resultados obtenidos del modelo perfecto sin imperfecciones se genera un rediseño de la estructura buscando incrementar su resistencia. Finalmente se generan las curvas de fragilidad y se determina si el nuevo diseño produce un incremento en la resistencia de la estructura metálica.Publicado en: Mecánica Computacional vol.
