Prospects for Nuclear Power
The prospects for a revival of nuclear power were dim even before the partial reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Nuclear power has long been controversial because of concerns about nuclear accidents, proliferation risk, and the storage of spent fuel. These concerns are real and important. In addition, however, a key challenge for nuclear power has been the high cost of construction for nuclear plants. Construction costs are high enough that it becomes difficult to make an economic argument for nuclear, even before incorporating these external costs. This is particularly true in countries like the United States where recent technological advances have dramatically increased the availability of natural gas.

Evaluating the Slow Adoption of Energy Efficient Investments: Are Renters Less Likely to Have Energy Efficient Appliances?
While public discussion of HR 2454 (the “Waxman Markey” bill) has focused on the cap-andtrade program that would be established for carbon emissions, the bill also includes provisions that would tighten energy efficiency standards for consumer appliances. Supporters argue that appliance standards help address a number of market failures. In particular, many studies have pointed out that landlords may buy cheap inefficient appliances when their tenants pay the utility bill. Although this landlord-tenant problem has been widely discussed in the literature, there is little empirical evidence on the magnitude of the distortion. This paper compares appliance ownership patterns between homeowners and renters using household-level data from the Residential Energy Consumption Survey. The results show that, controlling for household income and other household characteristics, renters are significantly less likely to have energy efficient refrigerators, clothes washers and dishwashers.
Acculturative Stress and Latino Depression: The Mediating Role of Behavioral and Cognitive Resources
Although research has found that acculturative stress is significantly associated with adverse psychological adjustment among Latinos, the mechanism by which this relationship exists is not clearly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of behavioral and cognitive resources—active coping and self-efficacy, respectively—as mediators of the relationship between acculturative stress and depression among a sample of Latina/o adults (N = 469). Multiple mediator analysis indicated that active coping partially mediated the relationship between acculturative stress and depression symptom severity. The indirect relationship of acculturative stress to depression symptom severity through self-efficacy was not significant. The results suggest that acculturative stress directly relates to Latino psychological adjustment, and lower behavioral active coping partially accounts for this relationship. Results are discussed in the context of culturally based stress and coping models, wherein the relationship between stressors and subsequent psychological adjustment is influenced by the degree of fit between stressor demands and individuals’ resources. Implications for treatment and theory are discussed
Relating magnetic reconnection to coronal heating
It is clear that the solar corona is being heated and that coronal magnetic
fields undergo reconnection all the time. Here we attempt to show that these
two facts are in fact related - i.e. coronal reconnection generates heat. This
attempt must address the fact that topological change of field lines does not
automatically generate heat. We present one case of flux emergence where we
have measured the rate of coronal magnetic reconnection and the rate of energy
dissipation in the corona. The ratio of these two, , is a current
comparable to the amount of current expected to flow along the boundary
separating the emerged flux from the pre-existing flux overlying it. We can
generalize this relation to the overall corona in quiet Sun or in active
regions. Doing so yields estimates for the contribution to corona heating from
magnetic reconnection. These estimated rates are comparable to the amount
required to maintain the corona at its observed temperature.Comment: To appear in Phil. Trans. Royal Soc.
Efimov Physics in Atom-Dimer Scattering of Lithium-6 Atoms
Lithium-6 atoms in the three lowest hyperfine states display universal
properties when the S-wave scattering length between each pair of states is
large. Recent experiments reported four pronounced features arising from Efimov
physics in the atom-dimer relaxation rate, namely two resonances and two local
minima. We use the universal effective field theory to calculate the atom-dimer
relaxation rate at zero temperature. Our results describe the four features
qualitatively and imply there is a hidden local minimum. In the vicinity of the
resonance at 685 G, we perform a finite temperature calculation which improves
the agreement of theory and experiment. We conclude that finite temperature
effects cannot be neglected in the analysis of the experimental data.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, final versio
Discrimination, Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, and Latino Psychological Distress: A Moderated-Mediational Model
Prior research has found that perceived discrimination is associated with adverse mental health outcomes among Latinos. However, the process by which this relationship occurs remains an understudied area. The present study investigated the role of acculturative stress in underlying the relationship between perceived discrimination and Latino psychological distress. Also examined was the ability of acculturation to serve as a moderator between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress. Among a sample of Latino adults (N = 669), moderated mediational analyses revealed that acculturative stress mediated the perceived discrimination-psychological distress relationship, and that the link between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress was moderated by Anglo behavioral orientation but not Latino behavioral orientation. The findings are discussed within a stress and coping perspective that identifies the psychological consequences associated with perceived discrimination and acculturative stress
