Dual source solar assisted heat pump model development, validation and comparison to conventional systems
This paper presents a new SAHP system integrated with hybrid photovoltaic/thermal panels (PVT). The main components of
the system developed are a dual-source HP, PVT panels and two storage tanks. The use of two storage tanks allows to directly store the hot water for DHW if water temperature reaches the set-point or to send it to the cold storage. On the other side, the use of two heat exchangers on source side, allows the system to switch from air to the cold tank increasing system’s performances.
In this work the developed system is compared with two conventional systems: an AWHP integrated with standard
photovoltaic panels and an AWHP integrated with hybrid PVT panels for DHW production only. Those systems were investigated for a single family house, through one year simulation in the TRNSYS software. Control strategy, size of the tanks and number of panels were investigated with parametric studies. Thanks to the good results of the simulations, an experimental prototype has been designed and built. Data observed from first monitoring campaign highlighted better performances than expected. After a season of investigation and data analysis for the system, new findings will be illustrate
Potassium bicarbonate and D-ribose effects on A72 canine and HTB-126 human cancer cell line proliferation in vitro
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The synergic action of KHCO<sub>3 </sub>and D-ribose is tested on A72 and HTB-126 cell lines proliferation using K:D-Rib solution. Altered Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+ </sup>ATPase expression and activity were shown in patients with cancer. Studies in human epithelial-derived malignancies indicate that K<sup>+ </sup>depletion also occurs, contributing to the increased intracellular Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+ </sup>ratio <abbrgrp><abbr bid="B1">1</abbr></abbrgrp>. D-ribose transformed to piruvate, enters into the Krebs's cycle and has a key role on energetic metabolism. The up-regulation of glycolysis in tumor cells is already well known and it is the rationale of F<sup>18</sup>-FDG PET diagnostic technique. D-ribose is synthesized by the non-oxidative transketolase PPP reaction.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results with different K:D-Rib concentrations show that MTT salt interferes with K:D-Rib solution and therefore this method is not reliable. The UV/VIS measurements show that K:D-Rib solutions reduce MTT salt to formazan in absence of cells. Cell proliferation has then been evaluated analysing the digital photos of the Giemsa stained cells with MCID™ software. At 5 mM K:D-Rib concentration, the cell growth arrests between 48 h and 72 h; in fact the cell number after 48 h is around the same with respect to the control after 72 h. In case of HTB-126 human cancer cells, the growth rate was valuated counting the splitting times during 48 days: control cells were split sixteen times while 5 mM treated cells eleven times. Most relevant, the clonogenic assay shows that nine colonies are formed in the control cells while only one is formed in the 5 mM and none in 10 mM treated cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The K:D-Rib solution has an antioxidant behaviour also at low concentrations. Incubation with 5 mM K:D-Rib solution on A72 cells shows a cytostatic effect at 5 mM, but it needs more than 24 h of incubation time to evidence this effect on cell proliferation. At the same concentration on human HTB-126 cells, K:D-Rib solution shows a clear replication slowing but the cytostatic effect at 10 mM K:D-Rib solution only. Results on A72 cells indicate the K<sup>+ </sup>uptake could be determinant either to arrest or to slow down cell growth.</p

Intra-abdominal infections represent an important cause of mortality in worldwide population and often require both rapid diagnostic work-up and swift therapeutic decisions. In this paper a relatively frequent pathologic condition in industrialized countries is described as a potential cause of multiple abdominal abscesses with severe sepsis. In the subsequent review of the literature, first-line diagnostic examinations and therapeutic options, both medical and surgical, are discussed according to the most recent guidelines and recommendations
Effects of a Randomized Home-Based Quality of Movement Protocol on Function, Posture and Strength in Outpatients with Obesity
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of two different home-based training interventions on functional parameters and body composition in obese patients. Significant interactions and main effects of time (p < 0.0001) were found in MQ compared to CT in the functional parameters, while muscular strength and body composition variables improved similarly in both groups with a main effect of time (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that a home-based movement quality training is effective in ameliorating postural control and movement efficiency with similar improvements in muscular strength and body composition compared with a mere traditional resistance training
Field tests of a novel solar-assisted dual source multifunctional heat pump
In this paper, we present the results of field study concerning a novel solar-assisted dual-source multifunctional heat pump, installed in a detached house in Milan. The system couples hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) panels with multifunctional and reversible heat pump. The proposed system is equipped with an “air source” evaporator and a “water source” evaporator, connected in series and operated alternatively, based on the ambient conditions and system parameters. The “air source” evaporator is an external unit; conversely, the “water source” evaporator is connected with a storage tank, fed by the PVT system. The PVT system is connected with the heat pump by two storage tanks to be used to produce domestic hot water and to be used in “water source” evaporator. Based on the operating conditions, the hot water is sent to one of the storage tank. The proposed system has been tested experimentally; the results show that the system was able to maintain high efficiency in the different seasons and was able to produce domestic hot water. It was found that the use of the “water source” evaporator was able to compensate the performance degradation of the “air source” source evaporator caused by the low ambient temperature
Evaluation of the impact of transient interruption of antiangiogenic treatment using ultrasound-based techniques in a murine model of hepatocellular carcinoma
BACKGROUND:
Development of escape pathways from antiangiogenic treatments was reported to be associated with enhanced tumor aggressiveness and rebound effect was suggested after treatment stop. Aim of the study was to evaluate tumor response simulating different conditions of administration of antiangiogenic treatment (transient or definitive treatment stop) in a mouse model of hepatocellular carcinoma.
METHODS:
Subcutaneous tumors were created by inoculating 5
7 10(6) Huh7 cells into the right flank of 14 nude mice. When tumor size reached 5-10 mm, mice were divided in 3 groups: group 1 was treated with placebo, group 2 was treated with sorafenib (62 mg/kg via gavage) but temporarily suspended from day +5 to +9, whereas in group 3 sorafenib was definitively stopped at day +5. At day +13 all mice were sacrificed, collecting masses for Western-Blot analyses. Volume was calculated with B-mode ultrasonography at day 0, +5, +9, +11 and +13. VEGFR2-targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound using BR55 (Bracco Imaging) was performed at day +5 and +13 and elastonosography (Esaote) at day +9 and +11 to assess tumor stiffness.
RESULTS:
Median growth percentage delta at day +13 versus day 0 was 197% (115-329) in group 1, 81% (48-144) in group 2 and 111% (27-167) in group 3. Median growth delta at day +13 with respect to day +5 was 79% (48-127), 37% (-14128) and 81% (15-87) in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Quantification of targeted-CEUS at day +13 showed higher values in group 3 (509 Arbitrary Units AI, range 293-652) than group 1 (275 AI, range 191-494) and group 2 (181 AI, range 63-318) (p=0.033). Western-Blot analysis demonstrated higher VEGFR2 expression in group 3 with respect to group 1 and 2.
CONCLUSIONS:
A transient interruption of antiangiogenic treatment does not impede restoration of tumor response, while a definitive interruption tends to stimulate a rebound of angiogenesis to higher level than without treatment

The conservation of Buddhist sculptures that were transferred to Europe at some point during their lifetime raises numerous questions: while these objects historically served a religious, devotional purpose, many of them currently belong to museums or private collections, where they are detached from their original context and often adapted to western taste.
A scientific study was carried out to address questions from Museo d'Arte Orientale of Turin curators in terms of whether these artifacts might be forgeries or replicas, and how they may have transformed over time. Several analytical techniques were used for materials identification and to study the production technique, ultimately aiming to discriminate the original materials from those added within later interventions
Health professionals who have worked in COVID-19 immunization centers suffer the effects of violence
BackgroundThe phenomenon violence against health professionals has received increasing attention in recent years because of its frequency and significant impact on victims’ mental health and disruption of health services. Despite this attention, little is known about the incidence of workplace violence in the highly politicized immunization services. Therefore, we decided to examine the prevalence of workplace violence in the COVID-19 immunization campaign, the risk and protective factors, and the impact on victims’ mental health.MethodsBetween March and April 2022, we conducted an anonymous online survey among health professionals working in COVID-19 vaccination centers in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region (Italy). We used the Questionnaire for Workplace Violence in Healthcare Settings and the Impact of Event Scale–Revised.ResultsOf the 200 participants, 93 (46.5%) reported being victims of an act of violence during the vaccination campaign, 60 of them verbally and 7 physically. In 35.5% of cases, the IES score indicated a possible post-traumatic stress reaction in the victim. Opinions on measures to prevent violence and support workers in the workplace differed according to the sex of the health professional, with women emphasizing the need for self-defense training and improvement of security arrangements (p < 0.001).ConclusionOne-third of health professionals involved in the COVID-19 immunization campaign reported that their mental health was affected by workplace violence. Public health professionals dealing with politicized and debated issues such as immunization should receive more attention, as should the implementation of a more structured and multidisciplinary approach to the problem within healthcare organizations
