August Sander : el progresismo de Colonia como recurso turístico

    Get PDF

E-books in Spanish university libraries: An analysis of online social sciences degrees

    Get PDF
[EN] This paper analyzes the availability, via both library lending licenses and open access, of digital versions of the monographs that professors recommend in online bachelor's degrees courses in social sciences at Spanish public universities. Monographs are the type of document most recommended by professors when it comes to teaching and learning in higher education. Digital format is most suitable for online degrees, considering the added effort entailed for libraries to get these documents owing to the geographic dispersion of the students. For this purpose, all the resources in the recommended reading section of the syllabi from a sample of online degree programs in social sciences for the 2022–2023 academic year were extracted. Then, the catalogs of the corresponding university libraries were consulted to check the availability of the monographs on the reading lists. In addition, the catalogs of the usual suppliers to Spanish university libraries were consulted to check the availability of lending licenses for libraries. Finally, types of digital lending platforms are analyzed. Monographs account for 85.6 % of the documents referenced in courses' recommended reading lists. Only 21.0 % of monographs are available in digital format, either through library lending (17.4 %) or open access (4.9 %). On the contrary, practically the entirety of reading lists is available for lending through university libraries in printed format. University libraries could make the effort to acquire even more digital lending licenses for a portion of the books recommended by professors, but in this way they could only obtain 40.9 % of the monographs in digital format. Therefore, the publishing industry is not currently meeting the needs of online university education in the social sciences, owing to a large part of its catalog – especially older works – not being offered in digital format as well as the lack of library lending licenses.S

Biosynthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K16 as an alternative to revalue agri-food by-products.

Probiotic metabolites, known as postbiotics, have received attention due to their wide variety of promoting health effects. One of the most exciting postbiotic is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), widely produced by lactic acid bacteria, due to its benefits in health. In addition, the performance of the biosynthesis of GABA by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum could be modulated through the modification of fermentation parameters. Due to their high nutritional value, agri-food by-products could be considered a useful fermentation source for microorganisms. Therefore, these by-products were proposed as fermentation substrates to produce GABA in this study. Previously, several experiments in Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) broth were performed to identify the most critical parameters to produce GABA using the strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K16. The percentage of inoculum, the initial pH, and the concentration of nutrients, such as monosodium glutamate or glucose, significantly affected the biosynthetic pathway of GABA. The highest GABA yield was obtained with 500mM of monosodium glutamate and 25g/L of glucose, and an initial pH of 5.5 and 1.2% inoculum. Furthermore, these investigated parameters were used to evaluate the possibility of using tomato, green pepper, apple, or orange by-products to get GABA-enriched fermented media, which is an excellent way to revalorise them. This work was supported by the Basque government (grant ELKARTEK – KK-2019/00034)

Libraries in universities that teach online or distance degrees face the difficulty of facilitating access to their students to the recommended bibliography of the subjects. This problem spread to all universities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The most obvious solution is to acquire that bibliography in digital format. Documents included in the syllabi of the Online Degree in Library and Information Science of the University of León, the only one taught in Spain in this modality, are analyzed in this paper to know what percentage of the monographs is available in digital format, through library loan licenses or open access. Given the low percentage obtained, which does not reach a third of the monographs and is considered clearly insufficient, we reflect on the reasons, proposing measures that libraries and teachers can carry out, and we state the necessary digitization of the monographs

[EN] Libraries in universities that teach online or distance degrees face the difficulty of facilitating access to their students to the recommended bibliography of the subjects. Both national and international recommendations on positive parenting recognize the need for supporting families in their childrearing tasks, particularly in psychosocial-risk situations. These recommendations highlight local services as the best source to support families. In this paper, the Program for Promoting Positive Parenting in Polígono Sur (5P’s) is described. 5P’s is a psycho-educational and community initiative starting from the need for specific materials for vulnerable families because of: (1) their psychosocial profile, (2) their cultural values; (3) living in a neighborhood with at-risk conditions. The contents, the format and the evaluation design of the program are introduced. Strengths and future challenges are discussed

Clinically Relevant Correction of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa by Dual sgRNA CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Gene Editing

Gene editing constitutes a novel approach for precisely correcting disease-causing gene mutations. Frameshift mutations inCOL7A1 causing recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosaare amenable to open reading frame restoration by non-homologous end joining repair-based approaches. Efficient targeteddeletion of faulty COL7A1 exons in polyclonal patient keratinocytes would enable the translation of this therapeutic strategy to the clinic. In this study, using a dual single-guide RNA(sgRNA)-guided Cas9 nuclease delivered as a ribonucleoprotein complex through electroporation, we have achieved veryefficient targeted deletion of COL7A1 exon 80 in recessivedystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) patient keratinocytescarrying a highly prevalent frameshift mutation. This ex vivonon-viral approach rendered a large proportion of correctedcells producing a functional collagen VII variant. The effectivetargeting of the epidermal stem cell population enabled longterm regeneration of a properly adhesive skin upon graftingonto immunodeficient mice. A safety assessment by next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis of potential off-target sitesdid not reveal any unintended nuclease activity. Our strategycould potentially be extended to a large number of COL7A1mutation-bearing exons within the long collagenous domainof this gene, opening the way to precision medicine for RDEB.The study was mainly supported by DEBRA International, funded by DEBRA Austria (grant termed as Larcher 1).
