Photo-controlled diffusion in reacting liquid crystals : a new tool for the creation of complex molecular architectures
Diffusion enforced photo-assembling during polymerization of a chiralÂnematic monomer blend yields a cholesteric network in which the helical pitch gradually changes over the cross-section of the film. The polarization selective reflection band of cholesterics can be made much wider than those of single pitch materials and may expand over the whole visible wavelength. The paper discusses the photo-controlled diffusion process in thin films, the important process parameters and some ofthe properties of the molecular architectures obtained
DNA sequencing with reagent recycling on wiregrid
The present invention relates to DNA sequencing with reagent cycling on the wiregrid. The sequencing approach suggested with which allows to use a single fluid with no washing steps. Based on strong optical confinement and of excitation light and of cleavage light, the sequencing reaction can be read-out without washing the surface. Stepwise sequencing is achieved by using nucleotides with optically cleavable blocking moietys. After read-out the built in nucleotide is deblocked by cleavage light through the same substrate. This ensures that only bound nucleotides will be unblocked.</p
Modification of the twist angle in chiral nematic polymer films by photoisomerization of the chiral dopant
A method for the production of polarization sensitive recordings in liquid crystalline polymers is presented. The system is based on local modification of the twist angle of chiral nematic polymer films. The twist angle of the polymer film is varied by modifying the chemical structure of the chiral dopant. Here a photoisomerizable menthone derivative is used that has a fivefold difference in helical twisting power between the E and the Z isomer. The twist angle of the film can be varied between –90° and 0° by introducing a nonphotosensitive chiral dopant with opposite twisting sense. Complex pictures with gray scales can be recorded in the films with black and white contrasts higher than 20
