Phenomenological Analysis of and Elastic Scattering Data in the Impact Parameter Space
We use an almost model-independent analytical parameterization for and
elastic scattering data to analyze the eikonal, profile, and
inelastic overlap functions in the impact parameter space. Error propagation in
the fit parameters allows estimations of uncertainty regions, improving the
geometrical description of the hadron-hadron interaction. Several predictions
are shown and, in particular, the prediction for inelastic overlap
function at TeV shows the saturation of the Froissart-Martin
bound at LHC energies.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
More on general -brane solutions
Recently it was found that the complete integration of the
Einstein-dilaton-antisymmetric form equations depending on one variable and
describing static singly charged -branes leads to two and only two classes
of solutions: the standard asymptotically flat black -brane and the
asymptotically non-flat -brane approaching the linear dilaton background at
spatial infinity. Here we analyze this issue in more details and generalize the
corresponding uniqueness argument to the case of partially delocalized branes.
We also consider the special case of codimension one and find, in addition to
the standard domain wall, the black wall solution. Explicit relations between
our solutions and some recently found -brane solutions ``with extra
parameters'' are presented.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure
Bayesian inferences of galaxy formation from the K-band luminosity and HI mass functions of galaxies: constraining star formation and feedback
We infer mechanisms of galaxy formation for a broad family of semi-analytic
models (SAMs) constrained by the K-band luminosity function and HI mass
function of local galaxies using tools of Bayesian analysis. Even with a broad
search in parameter space the whole model family fails to match to constraining
data. In the best fitting models, the star formation and feedback parameters in
low-mass haloes are tightly constrained by the two data sets, and the analysis
reveals several generic failures of models that similarly apply to other
existing SAMs. First, based on the assumption that baryon accretion follows the
dark matter accretion, large mass-loading factors are required for haloes with
circular velocities lower than 200 km/s, and most of the wind mass must be
expelled from the haloes. Second, assuming that the feedback is powered by
Type-II supernovae with a Chabrier IMF, the outflow requires more than 25% of
the available SN kinetic energy. Finally, the posterior predictive
distributions for the star formation history are dramatically inconsistent with
observations for masses similar to or smaller than the Milky-Way mass. The
inferences suggest that the current model family is still missing some key
physical processes that regulate the gas accretion and star formation in
galaxies with masses below that of the Milky Way.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRA
CTMC calculations of electron capture and ionization in collisions of multiply charged ions with elliptical Rydberg atoms
We have performed classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) studies of electron
capture and ionization in multiply charged (Q=8) ion-Rydberg atom collisions at
intermediate impact velocities. Impact parallel to the minor and to the major
axis, respectively, of the initial Kepler electron ellipse has been
investigated. The important role of the initial electron momentum distribution
found for singly charged ion impact is strongly disminished for higher
projectile charge, while the initial spatial distribution remains important for
all values of Q studied.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
Phenomenology of Goldstino Couplings
A general coupling of the Goldstino to the matter field and the weak
gravitational field is constructed based on the standard and the nonlinear
Volkov-Akulov realization of SUSY. The resulting Lagrangian, which is invariant
under SUSY transformations, can give rise to explicit interactions which couple
the helicity +-1/2 states of the gravitino with the gravitational field as well
as the matter field.Comment: 7 pages; final version to appear in Modern Physics Letters
Using particle shape to induce tilted and bistable liquid crystal anchoring
We use Monte Carlo simulations of hard Gaussian overlap (HGO) particles symmetrically confined in slab geometry to investigate the role of particle-substrate interactions on liquid crystalline
anchoring. Despite the restriction here to purely steric interactions and smooth substrates, a range of behaviours are captured, including tilted anchoring and homeotropic-planar bistability. These macroscopic behaviours are all achieved through appropriate tuning of the microscopics of the HGO-substrate interaction, based upon non-additive descriptions for the HGO-substrate shape parameter.</p
Scalable Text and Link Analysis with Mixed-Topic Link Models
Many data sets contain rich information about objects, as well as pairwise
relations between them. For instance, in networks of websites, scientific
papers, and other documents, each node has content consisting of a collection
of words, as well as hyperlinks or citations to other nodes. In order to
perform inference on such data sets, and make predictions and recommendations,
it is useful to have models that are able to capture the processes which
generate the text at each node and the links between them. In this paper, we
combine classic ideas in topic modeling with a variant of the mixed-membership
block model recently developed in the statistical physics community. The
resulting model has the advantage that its parameters, including the mixture of
topics of each document and the resulting overlapping communities, can be
inferred with a simple and scalable expectation-maximization algorithm. We test
our model on three data sets, performing unsupervised topic classification and
link prediction. For both tasks, our model outperforms several existing
state-of-the-art methods, achieving higher accuracy with significantly less
computation, analyzing a data set with 1.3 million words and 44 thousand links
in a few minutes.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
