Slow relaxation dynamics of clogs in a vibrated granular silo

    Get PDF
We experimentally explore the vibration-induced unclogging of arches halting the flow in a two-dimensional silo. The endurance of arches is determined by carrying out a survival analysis of their breaking times. By analyzing the dynamics of two morphological variables, we demonstrate that arches evolve toward less regular structures and it seems that there may exist a certain degree of irregularity that the arch reaches before collapsing. Moreover, we put forward that σ (the standard deviation of all angles between consecutive beads) describes faithfully the morphological evolution of the arch. Focusing on long-lasting arches, we study σ calculating its two-time autocorrelation function and its mean-squared displacement. In particular, the apparent logarithmic increase of the correlation and the decrease of the mean-squared displacement of σ when the waiting time is increased reveal a slowing down of the dynamics. This behavior is a clear hallmark of aging phenomena and confirms the lack of ergodicity in the unclogging dynamics. Our findings provide new insights on how an arch tends to destabilize and how the probability that it breaks with a long sustained vibration decreases with time.Fil: Guerrero Borges, Veronica. Minimization of measuring points for the electric field exposure map generation in indoor environments by means of Kriging interpolation and selective sampling

In a world with increasing systems accessing to radio spectrum, the concern for exposure to electromagnetic fields is growing and therefore it is necessary to check limits in those areas where electromagnetic sources are working. Therefore, radio and exposure maps are continuously being generated, mainly in outdoor areas, by using many interpolation techniques. In this work, Surfer software and Kriging interpolation have been used for the first time to generate an indoor exposure map. A regular measuring mesh has been generated. Elimination of Less Significant Points (ELSP) and Geometrical Elimination of Neighbors (GEN) strategies to reduce the measuring points have been presented and evaluated. Both strategies have been compared to the map generated with all the measurements by calculating the root mean square and mean absolute errors. Results indicate that ELSP method can reduce up to 70% of the mesh measuring points while producing similar exposure maps to the one generated with all the measuring points. GEN, however, produces distorted maps and much higher error indicators even for 50% of eliminated measuring points. As a conclusion, a procedure for reducing the measuring points to generate radio and exposure maps is proposed based on the ELSP method and the Kriging interpolation. This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors

Light-driven motion of charged domain walls in isolated ferroelectrics

    Get PDF
©2022 American Physical SocietyLight-induced ferroelectric domain wall motion turns out to be a promising phenomenon to de- velop new photo-controlled devices. However, the physical origin of this ligh-matter coupling when material is irradiated with visible light remains unclear. Here, a phenomenological model predicting the motion of charged domain walls (CDWs) is developed. The photo-induced electronic reconstruc- tion mechanism is proposed as the primary absorption mechanism, leading to a linear dependence for the polarization perturbation with the light intensity. Domain walls motion is then driven by the energetic difference between domains in a CDW array, such that the macroscopic polarization can be easily tuned.Postprint (author's final draft

The current role of machine learning and explainability in actuarial science

    Get PDF
Actuarial science seeks to evaluate, predict and manage the impact of future events. Nowadays, the actuary faces the challenge of predicting and managing risks efficiently, with a universe of information growing exponentially in real-time and with a business dynamic that demands constant competitiveness and innovation. The techniques associated with data engineering and data science open a window of tools that seek, through technology, to improve the processes of product design, pricing, reserves and establishment of market niches practically and realistically, considering the pros and cons that brings the availability and constant updating of information, as well as the computational times that this implies. Therefore, this article aims to review the application of Explainable Machine Learning techniques as an alternative to the development of more efficient and practical actuarial models.Facultad de Informátic

Un estudio comparativo sobre el pensamiento profesional y la "acción docente" de los profesores de ciencias de Educación Secundaria. Parte II

    Get PDF
This article is a part of a wider research on secondary science teachers' beliefs. Through the use of a questionnaire data were obtained from 103 secondary science teachers in service with different degrees of experience. Analysis of data are discussed in terms of their implication in teacher training in service
