    Get PDF
Thank You!Thanks to you, our donors and partners, the 2nd annual 2019 Black Votes Matter Tour exceeded all expectations! We inspired youth and adults to Learn, Respect, and then Go Make History. We are extremely grateful for all of our donors and ask for your support as we continue to invest in the next generation of youth leadership development. We are also educating Greater Omaha to greater empathy and understanding of Black History and where our youth fit in the picture. Will you join us? Background The seed for the Black Votes Matter Youth initiative is as a response to the lack of knowledge of the black history and the civil rights movement. In order for our youth to become effective leaders, they must learn and have respect for their own history. The Black Votes Matter Tour was designed to address this void.Students are chosen from nominations made by various grassroots organizations serving youth, such as the HOPE Center, Avenue Scholars, 100 Black Men, Urban League, Big Brothers Big Sisters and more. In addition to individual donations, we received significant grants from The Sherwood Foundation, The Weitz Family Foundation, Omaha Community Foundation African American Unity Fund, and Barbara Weitz. Our proceeds employ North Omaha vendors and service providers. Since its original design, the Tour has been continually enhanced including the pre and post tour experiences, the addition of tour content, the tracking of outcomes and enhancements and maximizing potential student outcomes. This comprehensive report will address the efficacy of the Black Votes Matter Tour and ask for your continued support

2017 Mayoral and City Council Election

In 2008 North Omaha 62% of the registered voters, actually voted, that % is called voter turnout. In 2012 the turnout was 55%. In 2016, in spite of repeated warning from this column and elsewhere that unless we voted, candidate Trump could win and that could be disastrous to urban communities like north Omaha. Well we voted at a dismal 47% and candidate Trump has become the President of the USA. Now in less than 60 days since becoming President, there have been cuts in federal programs that our community needs, dumb immigration policies, foreign policies that could bring us into serious war(s), health care for millions in jeopardy and more. cx We are constantly ignoring the importance of our vote and assuming the results will be different, that’s called insanity. Our small vote in 2016 was insane. What should we do in 2017? If you voted in 2016 vote in 2017. If you did not vote, get it right this time and vote!!

    Vanessa Ward for Governor!!

Vanessa Ward represents every good and confronts the bad about the politics. North Omaha has produced some great gems over the years. Athletics, musicians, entrepreneurship, community, the professions, intellectual capital and lastly in politics. Space does not allow me to expand on each but I surely could. Ernie Chambers, Gayle Sayers, Buddy Miles, Cathy Hughes, Bob Gibson, Johnny Rodgers, Gabrielle Union, Dr. Donald Townsend, Symone Sanders, the Fair Deal Café and oh yea, Malcolm. This short list represents only the “tip of the iceberg” of what our north Omaha has offered. For of those not on this short, I ask forgiveness, just not enough space; Buddy Hogan, etc. you are not forgotten

I share an important issue affecting all of Omaha but critically affecting North Omaha residents. Coal burning creates toxic air and many other public health issues. Coal plants are responsible for 42 percent of US mercury emissions, a toxic heavy metal that can damage the nervous, digestive, and immune systems, and is a serious threat to the child development. Just 1/70th of a teaspoon of mercury deposited on a 25-acre lake can make the fish unsafe to eat. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Emissions Inventory, US coal power plants emitted 45,676 pounds of mercury in 2014 (the latest year data is available

    Letters from North Omaha

Dear Senator Ben Sasse, Many voters in 2014 voted for your opponent Dave Domina, I was his deputy campaign manager. Once elected I expected that the communities and voters throughout Nebraska would be respected and their needs evaluated and some degree of dialogue. We are real, we are Nebraskans and have expectations of our elected officials. I am a resident and advocate for north Omaha. We have needs related to poverty, jobs, economic development, healthcare, home ownership, and more. To my knowledge there are no initiatives, no dialogue, nothing. Additionally, it appears that there is no diversity on your senate staffs in Nebraska, that diversity can be a basis for understanding the needs of the diverse communities in Nebraska. Your disrespectful lack of no visual or verbal reaction to Bill Maher racial remarks is no surprise. I urge you to represent all Nebraska in your service

2016 Nebraska Democratic Caucus: Everything You Wanted To Know About The Caucus But Were Afraid To Ask

The process of becoming the President of the United States is complex and lengthy. It begins with each of the major political parties deciding who will get the party’s nomination and become the Democratic or Republican Party’s candidate to become the President. It is important to note that the first step is entirely within each party separately. The Democrats do their thing as do the Republican. In a later column I will dissect the anatomy of a presidential campaign. This article will focus on primary/caucus season, which begins February 1st in Iowa

In January of 2015, I wrote “As you know the North Omaha Voter Participation Project (Voter Project) has been in the forefront of North Omaha’s voter participation for now nine (9) years, founded by Preston Love Jr. Recently Preston has written two very thought provoking articles relative to the voting problems in North Omaha (see the titles below). The Voter Project along with others, saw the upcoming release of the film \u27Selma\u27 as a great opportunity to highlight the history of voting rights and the importance of voting. Since one of our Voter Project goals is to engage young people and build strong future voters and leaders, this film seemed like a perfect opportunity to begin that work through a special showing just for youth. “. We provided a free movie, popcorn, drink and a after movie panel discussion for 900 north Omaha youth
