Nambu monopoles interacting with lattice defects in two-dimensional artificial square spin ice
The interactions between an excitation (similar to a pair of Nambu monopoles)
and a lattice defect are studied in an artificial two-dimensional square spin
ice. This is done by considering a square array of islands containing only one
island different from all others. This difference is incorporated in the
magnetic moment (spin) of the "imperfect" island and several cases are studied,
including the special situation in which this distinct spin is zero (vacancy).
We have shown that the two extreme points of a malformed island behave like two
opposite magnetic charges. Then, the effective interaction between a pair of
Nambu monopoles with the deformed island is a problem involving four magnetic
charges (two pairs of opposite poles) and a string. We also sketch the
configuration of the field lines of these four charges to confirm this picture.
The influence of the string on this interaction decays rapidly with the string
distance from the defect.Comment: 7 pages, 13 figure
Non-parametric comparison of histogrammed two-dimensional data distributions using the Energy Test
When monitoring complex experiments, comparison is often made between regularly acquired histograms of data and reference histograms which represent the ideal state of the equipment. With the larger HEP experiments now ramping up, there is a need for automation of this task since the volume of comparisons could overwhelm human operators. However, the two-dimensional histogram comparison tools available in ROOT have been noted in the past to exhibit shortcomings. We discuss a newer comparison test for two-dimensional histograms, based on the Energy Test of Aslan and Zech, which provides more conclusive
discrimination between histograms of data coming from different distributions than methods provided in a recent ROOT release. The Science and Technology Facilities Council, U
The true nature of the alleged planetary nebula W16-185
We report the discovery of a small cluster of massive stars embedded in a NIR
nebula in the direction of the IRAS15411-5352 point source, which is related to
the alleged planetary nebula W16-185. The majority of the stars present large
NIR excess characteristic of young stellar objects and have bright counterparts
in the Spitzer IRAC images; the most luminous star (IRS1) is the NIR
counterpart of the IRAS source. We found very strong unresolved Brgamma
emission at the IRS1 position and more diluted and extended emission across the
continuum nebula. From the sizes and electron volume densities we concluded
that they represent ultra-compact and compact HII regions, respectively.
Comparing the Brgamma emission with the 7 mm free-free emission, we estimated
that the visual extinction ranges between 14 and 20 mag. We found that only one
star (IRS1) can provide the number of UV photons necessary to ionize the
nebula.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables V3: minor grammatical changes. Figure

Modelling of integrated multi-energy systems : drivers, requirements, and opportunities
There is growing recognition that decarbonisation of existing uses of electricity is only ‘part of the story’ and that closer attention needs to be given to demand for energy in heating or cooling and in transport, and to all the energy vectors and infrastructures that supply the end-use demand. In this respect, concepts such as ‘multi-energy systems’ (MES) have been put forward and are gaining increasing momentum, with the aim of identifying how multiple energy systems that have been traditionally operated, planned and regulated in independent silos can be integrated to improve their collective technical, economic, and environmental performance. This paper addresses the need for modelling of MES which is capable of assessing interactions between different sectors and the energy vectors they are concerned with, so as to bring out the benefits and potential unforeseen or undesired drawbacks arising from energy systems integration. Drivers for MES modelling and the needs of different users of models are discussed, along with some of the practicalities of such modelling, including the choices to be made in respect of spatial and temporal dimensions, what these models might be used to quantify, and how they may be framed mathematically. Examples of existing MES models and tools and their capabilities, as well as of studies in which such models have been used in the authors’ own research, are provided to illustrate the general concepts discussed. Finally, challenges, opportunities and recommendations are summarised for the engagement of modellers in developing a new range of analytical capabilities that are needed to deal with the complexity of ME
Risk factors associated with Toxoplasma gondii infection in dairy cattle, State of Rio de Janeiro.
Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic zoonoses throughout the world. Infection in man and animals varies in different geographical areas influenced by many environmental conditions. Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in cattle in Brazil ranges from 1.03 to 71%. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 58 out of 453 farms in the South Fluminense Paraiba Valley, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over 3-year-old cattle (n=589) from dairy herds were selected for blood collection and detection of anti-T. gondii antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFA) with initial titration of 1:16; titers ? 64 were considered positive. Univariate analysis of risk factors showed that cats in contact with cattle, cats in contact with drinking water, and number of cats were associated with T. gondii seroprevalence. Logistic regression revealed a two-fold increased risk for infection of cattle (p=0.0138) through larger number of cats (>3) compared with low numbers of cats (1-2) on the farm. In contrast, the presence of chickens was considered a protective factor (p=0.025).

Renormalisation scheme for vector fields on T2 with a diophantine frequency
We construct a rigorous renormalisation scheme for analytic vector fields on
the 2-torus of Poincare type. We show that iterating this procedure there is
convergence to a limit set with a ``Gauss map'' dynamics on it, related to the
continued fraction expansion of the slope of the frequencies. This is valid for
diophantine frequency vectors.Comment: final versio
The Northern Sky Optical Cluster Survey II: An Objective Cluster Catalog for 5800 Square Degrees
We present a new, objectively defined catalog of candidate galaxy clusters
based on the galaxy catalogs from the Digitized Second Palomar Observatory Sky
Survey (DPOSS). This cluster catalog, derived from the best calibrated plates
in the high latitude (|b|>30) Northern Galactic Cap region, covers 5,800 square
degrees, and contains 8,155 candidate clusters. A simple adaptive kernel
density mapping technique, combined with the SExtractor object detection
algorithm, is used to detect galaxy overdensities, which we identify as
clusters. Simulations of the background galaxy distribution and clusters of
varying richnesses and redshifts allow us to optimize detection parameters, and
measure the completeness and contamination rates for our catalog. Cluster
richnesses and photometric redshifts are measured, using integrated colors and
magnitudes for each cluster. An extensive spectroscopic survey is used to
confirm the photometric results.
This catalog, with well-characterized sample properties, provides a sound
basis for future studies of cluster physics and large scale structure.Comment: 49 pages, 16 figures. Accepted to AJ; appearing in April. Version

On the canonical map of surfaces with q>=6
We carry out an analysis of the canonical system of a minimal complex surface
of general type with irregularity q>0. Using this analysis we are able to
sharpen in the case q>0 the well known Castelnuovo inequality K^2>=3p_g+q-7.
Then we turn to the study of surfaces with p_g=2q-3 and no fibration onto a
curve of genus >1. We prove that for q>=6 the canonical map is birational.
Combining this result with the analysis of the canonical system, we also prove
the inequality: K^2>=7\chi+2. This improves an earlier result of the first and

Posteriormente, o albedo foi determinado segundo procedimentos do Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL).
