    Histopathological findings of pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands

Study design: 189 PA were selected and classified as myxoid or stroma-rich, cellular or cell-rich and classic (balanced amount of epithelial and stromal components). The epithelial component was analyzed according to the presence of plasmacytoid, spindle, clear, squamous, basaloid, cubic, oncocytoid and mucous cells and the morphological pattern (trabecular, ductal, cystic and solid). The stromal component was analyzed according to the presence of myxoid, hyaline, chondroid or calcified tissue. Results: Plasmacytoid cells were the most commonly found cellular type followed by fusiform and cuboidal cells. Trabeculae and duct-like structures were the most frequent patterns formed by the epithelial cells. Myxoid and chondroid stroma were the most frequently found mesenchymal-like tissue usually forming the so called myxochondroid stroma.     Differential cell autonomous responses determine the outcome of coxsackievirus infections in murine pancreatic α and β cells

Available from eLife Sciences Publications via the DOI in this record.Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease caused by loss of pancreatic β cells via apoptosis while neighboring α cells are preserved. Viral infections by coxsackieviruses (CVB) may contribute to trigger autoimmunity in T1D. Cellular permissiveness to viral infection is modulated by innate antiviral responses, which vary among different cell types. We presently describe that global gene expression is similar in cytokine-treated and virus-infected human islet cells, with up-regulation of gene networks involved in cell autonomous immune responses. Comparison between the responses of rat pancreatic α and β cells to infection by CVB5 and 4 indicate that α cells trigger a more efficient antiviral response than β cells, including higher basal and induced expression of STAT1-regulated genes, and are thus better able to clear viral infections than β cells.     Cholesteryl hemiazelate causes lysosome dysfunction impacting vascular smooth muscle cell homeostasis

    In atherosclerotic lesions, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) represent half of the foam cell population, which is characterized by an aberrant accumulation of undigested lipids within lysosomes. Loss of lysosome function impacts VSMC homeostasis and disease progression. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying lysosome dysfunction in these cells is, therefore, crucial. We identify cholesteryl hemiazelate (ChA), a stable oxidation end-product of cholesteryl-polyunsaturated fatty acid esters, as an inducer of lysosome malfunction in VSMCs. ChA-treated VSMCs acquire a foam-cell-like phenotype, characterized by enlarged lysosomes full of ChA and neutral lipids. The lysosomes are perinuclear and exhibit degradative capacity and cargo exit defects. Lysosome luminal pH is also altered. Even though the transcriptional response machinery and autophagy are not activated by ChA, the addition of recombinant lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) is able to rescue lysosome dysfunction. ChA significantly affects VSMC proliferation and migration, impacting atherosclerosis. In summary, this work shows that ChA is sufficient to induce lysosomal dysfunction in VSMCs, that, in ChA-treated VSMCs, neither lysosome biogenesis nor autophagy are triggered, and, finally, that recombinant LAL can be a therapeutic approach for lysosomal dysfunction

    Urban wild meat consumption and trade in Central Amazonia

    The switch from hunting wild meat for home consumption to supplying more lucrative city marketsin Amazonia can adversely affect some game species. Despite this, information on the amounts of wild meateaten in Amazonian cities is still limited. We estimated wild meat consumption rates in 5 cities in the State ofAmazonas in Brazil through 1046 door-to-door household interviews conducted from 2004 to 2012. With thesedata, we modeled the relationship between wild meat use and a selection of socioeconomic indices. We thenscaled up our model to determine the amounts of wild meat likely to be consumed annually in the 62 urbancenters in central Amazonia. A total of 80.3% of all interviewees reported consuming wild meat during an averageof 29.3 (CI 11.6) days per year. Most wild meat was reported as bought in local markets (80.1%) or hunted by afamily member (14.9%). Twenty-one taxa were cited as consumed, mostly mammals (71.6%), followed by reptiles(23.2%) and then birds (5.2%). The declared frequency of wild meat consumption was positively correlated withthe proportion of rural population as well as with the per capita gross domestic product of the municipality(administrative divisions) where the cities were seated. We estimated that as much as 10,691 t of wild meat mightbe consumed annually in the 62 urban centers within central Amazonia, the equivalent of 6.49 kg per person peryear. In monetary terms, this amounts to US21.72perpersonperyearorUS21.72 per person per year or US35.1 million overall, the latter figureis comparable to fish and timber production in the region. Given this magnitude of wild meat trade in centralAmazonia, it is fundamental to integrate this activity into the formal economy and actively develop policies thatallow the trade of more resilient taxa and restrict trade in species sensitive to hunting

    Two‑Dimensional Copper Coordination Polymer Assembled with Fumarate and 5,5’‑Dimethyl‑2,2’‑bipyridine: Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties

    [[Cu(fum)(dmb)]·H2O]n, exhibiting weak antiferromagnetic interactions, displays a two-dimensional array comprised of rhombic dinuclear units, where the carboxylate moieties of fumarate bridging ligand displays monodentate and oxo-bridging coordination modes connecting two Cu centers.[[Cu(fum)(dmb)]·H2O]n (1) (fum = fumarate; dmb = 5,5’-dimethyl-2,2’-bipyridine) was obtained by a self-assembly solution reaction, at ambient conditions, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Crystallographic studies show that 1 crystallizes in a triclinic system with a P-1 space group, with a = 8.2308(2) Å, b = 9.7563(2) Å, c = 10.3990(2) Å; α = 80.3444(4)°, β = 77.9517(4)°, γ = 82.0440(5)°; V = 800.45(3) Å3. The Cu(II) centers are five-coordinated with a distorted square pyramidal configuration. The formation of a two-dimensional (2D) array in 1 can be explained by the presence of two different coordination modes in the fumarate ligand: μ-η1:η0 and μ2-η2:η0, both in a bridging monodentate manner, the latter generating distinctive rhombic-dinuclear units. The thermal stability of 1 has also been analyzed.     On the methodological unification in electroencephalography

    BACKGROUND: This paper presents results of a pursuit of a repeatable and objective methodology of analysis of the electroencephalographic (EEG) time series. METHODS: Adaptive time-frequency approximations of EEG are discussed in the light of the available experimental and theoretical evidence, and applicability in various experimental and clinical setups. RESULTS: Four lemmas and three conjectures support the following conclusion. CONCLUSION: Adaptive time-frequency approximations of signals unify most of the univariate computational approaches to EEG analysis, and offer compatibility with its traditional (visual) analysis, used in clinical applications

    The Correlation between Mixing Length and Metallicity on the Giant Branch: Implications for Ages in the Gaia Era

    In the updated APOGEE-Kepler catalog, we have asteroseismic and spectroscopic data for over 3000 first ascent red giants. Given the size and accuracy of this sample, these data offer an unprecedented test of the accuracy of stellar models on the post-main-sequence. When we compare these data to theoretical predictions, we find a metallicity dependent temperature offset with a slope of around 100 K per dex in metallicity. We find that this effect is present in all model grids tested, and that theoretical uncertainties in the models, correlated spectroscopic errors, and shifts in the asteroseismic mass scale are insufficient to explain this effect. Stellar models can be brought into agreement with the data if a metallicity-dependent convective mixing length is used, with Delta alpha(ML), YREC similar to 0.2 per dex in metallicity, a trend inconsistent with the predictions of three-dimensional stellar convection simulations. If this effect is not taken into account, isochrone ages for red giants from the Gaia data will be off by as much as a factor of two even at modest deviations from solar metallicity ([Fe/H]- -0.5)
