Control-enhanced quantum metrology under Markovian noise
Quantum metrology is supposed to significantly improve the precision of
parameter estimation by utilizing suitable quantum resources. However, the
predicted precision can be severely distorted by realistic noises. Here, we
propose a control-enhanced quantum metrology scheme to defend against these
noises for improving the metrology performance. Our scheme can automatically
alter the parameter encoding dynamics with adjustable controls, thus leading to
optimal resultant states that are less sensitive to the noises under
consideration. As a demonstration, we numerically apply it to the problem of
frequency estimation under several typical Markovian noise channels. Through
comparing our control-enhanced scheme with the standard scheme and the
ancilla-assisted scheme, we show that our scheme performs better and can
improve the estimation precision up to around one order of magnitude.
Furthermore, we conduct a proof-of-principle experiment in nuclear magnetic
resonance system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. The
research here is helpful for current quantum platforms to harness the power of
quantum metrology in realistic noise environments.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

Fluorinated solid electrolyte interphase enables highly reversible solid-state Li metal battery
Partial funding for Open Access provided by the UMD Libraries' Open Access Publishing Fund.Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are receiving great interest because their high mechanical strength and transference number could potentially suppress Li dendrites and their high electrochemical stability allows the use of high-voltage cathodes, which enhances the energy density and safety of batteries. However, the much lower critical current density and easier Li dendrite propagation in SSEs than in nonaqueous liquid electrolytes hindered their possible applications. Herein, we successfully suppressed Li dendrite growth in SSEs by in situ forming an LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) between the SSEs and the Li metal. The LiF-rich SEI successfully suppresses the penetration of Li dendrites into SSEs, while the low electronic conductivity and the intrinsic electrochemical stability of LiF block side reactions between the SSEs and Li. The LiF-rich SEI enhances the room temperature critical current density of Li3PS4 to a record-high value of >2 mA cm−2. Moreover, the Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency was escalated from 88% of pristine Li3PS4 to more than 98% for LiF-coated Li3PS4. In situ formation of electronic insulating LiF-rich SEI provides an effective way to prevent Li dendrites in the SSEs, constituting a substantial leap toward the practical applications of next-generation high-energy solid-state Li metal batteries.https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.aau924
The giant Upper Yangtze Pb-Zn province in SW China: Reviews, new advances and a new genetic model
In the western margin of the Yangtze Block, SW China, the Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) is spatially associated with > 400 carbonate-hosted epigenetic Pb-Zn deposits. These deposits form the giant Upper Yangtze Pb-Zn metallogenic province with > 20 Mt base metals. In the southeastern part of this province, the important Pb-Zn deposits include those of the Yinchangpo, Yunluhe, Maozhachang, Tianqiao, Banbanqiao, Mangdong, Shaojiwan, Liangyan, Qingshan, Shanshulin, Nayongzhi and Guanziyao deposits. Sulfide ore bodies in these deposits are (i) hosted in late Ediacaran to middle Permian limestone, dolomitic limestone and dolostone; (ii) structurally controlled by reverse fault-anticline tectonic systems; and (iii) spatially associated with the ELIP flood basalts and mafic dikes, and early Permian, early Carboniferous and early Cambrian organic matter-rich black shales. C-O isotopic compositions suggest that dolostone and limestone, mantle-derived rocks of the ELIP, and sedimentary organic matters supplied C-O to the hydrothermal systems through water/rock (W/R) interaction. New and existing S isotopic compositions of sulfides imply multiple sources of S and the reduction of sulfate through both abiotic thermochemical (TSR) and bacterially mediated (BSR) processes. Zn isotopes indicate that the sources of Zn were most likely related to the ELT with various contributions from sediments and basements locally. Pb isotope signatures are suggestive of derivation of Pb from basements and sedimentary rocks with variable influences from the ELIP. Sr isotopes support that mantle-derived rocks, sediments and basements were involved in Pb-Zn mineralization, and they have various contributions in different deposits. We consider that the Pb-Zn deposits in the Upper Yangtze province are the mixed products of multiple S species bearing solutions and metal-rich fluids, both of which were derived from, flowed through or interacted with multiple lithostratigraphic units in the western Yangtze Block. The change of tectonic regimes from extension to compression after eruption of basalts of the ELT, and then to extension during Early Mesozoic, facilitated extraction, migration, and excretion of ore-forming metals and associated fluids. Mixing of fluids and reduction geochemical barrier activated TSR, causing cyclical carbonate dissolution, CO2 degassing and recrystallization (namely carbonate buffer). All these processes triggered continuous precipitation of huge amounts of hydro thermal minerals. Underplating and eruption of ELT basalts provided heat flow, fluids and volatiles, whereas the basalts acted as an impermeable and protective layer, and even as ore-hosting rocks. These Pb-Zn deposits have spatial and genetic association with igneous activities of the ELIP, and are characterized by high ore grades ( > 10 wt% Pb + Zn), high concentrations of associated metals (e.g. Cu, Ag, Ge, and Cd), and medium-low temperatures (usually < 300 degrees C) and salinities (commonly < 20 wt% NaCl equiv.), all of which are significantly different from those of typical Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) deposits. Hence, the carbonate-hosted epigenetic Pb-Zn deposits in the Upper Yangtze metallogenic province representing to a new type of Pb-Zn deposits that are hosted in platform carbonate sequences and formed within compressional zones of passive margin tectonic settings
Correlated spectro-polarimetric study along the Z track in XTE J1701-462 puts constraints on its coronal geometry
Context. In September 2022, the transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary
XTE J1701-462 went into a new outburst. Aims. The objective of this work is to
examine the evolution of the accretion geometry of XTE J1701-462 by studying
the spectro-polarimetric properties along the Z track of this source. The
simultaneous observations archived by the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation
Telescope (HXMT) and the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) give us the
opportunity. Methods. We present a comprehensive X-ray spectro-polarimetric
analysis of XTE J1701-462, using simultaneous observations from IXPE,
Insight-HXMT and NuSTAR. For IXPE observations, two methods are employed to
measure the polarization: a model-independent measurement with PCUBE and a
model-dependent polarization-spectral analysis with XSPEC. The corresponding
spectra from Insight-HXMT and NuSTAR are studied with two configurations that
correspond to a slab-like corona and a spherical shell-like corona,
respectively. Results. Significant polarization characteristics are detected in
XTE J1701-462. The polarization degree shows a decreasing trend along the Z
track, reducing from (4.84 0.37)% to (3.76 0.43)% on the horizontal
branch and jumping to less than 1% on the normal branch. The simultaneous
spectral analysis from Insight-HXMT and NuSTAR suggests that the redistribution
between the thermal and Comptonized emission could be the reason for the PD
evolution along the Z track. Based on the correlated spectro-polarimetric
properties, we propose that this source likely has a slab coronal geometry and
the size/thickness of the corona decreases along the Z track
Molecular characterization of sub-frontal recurrent medulloblastomas reveals potential clinical relevance
BackgroundSingle recurrence in the sub-frontal region after cerebellar medulloblastoma (MB) resection is rare and the underlying molecular characteristics have not been specifically addressed.MethodsWe summarized two such cases in our center. All five samples were molecularly profiled for their genome and transcriptome signatures.ResultsThe recurrent tumors displayed genomic and transcriptomic divergence. Pathway analysis of recurrent tumors showed functional convergence in metabolism, cancer, neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction, and PI3K-AKT signaling pathways. Notably, the sub-frontal recurrent tumors had a much higher proportion (50–86%) of acquired driver mutations than that reported in other recurrent locations. The acquired putative driver genes in the sub-frontal recurrent tumors functionally enriched for chromatin remodeler-associated genes, such as KDM6B, SPEN, CHD4, and CHD7. Furthermore, the germline mutations of our cases showed a significant functional convergence in focal adhesion, cell adhesion molecules, and ECM–receptor interaction. Evolutionary analysis showed that the recurrence could be derived from a single primary tumor lineage or had an intermediate phylogenetic similarity to the matched primary one.ConclusionRare single sub-frontal recurrent MBs presented specific mutation signatures that might be related to the under-dose radiation. Particular attention should be paid to optimally covering the sub-frontal cribriform plate during postoperative radiotherapy targeting
The First Polarimetric View on Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in a Black Hole X-ray Binary
We present the first polarimetric analysis of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations
(QPO) in a black hole binary utilizing \textit{IXPE} data. Our study focuses on
Swift J1727.8--1613, which experienced a massive outburst that was observed by
various telescopes across different wavelengths. The \textit{IXPE} observation
we studied was conducted during the Hard-Intermediate state. The polarization
degree (PD) and polarization angle (PA) were measured at 4.280.20\% and
, respectively. Remarkably, significant QPO signals
were detected during this observation, with a QPO frequency of approximately
1.34 Hz and a fractional root-mean-square (RMS) amplitude of about 12.3\%.
Furthermore, we conducted a phase-resolved analysis of the QPO using the
Hilbert-Huang transform technique. The photon index showed a strong modulation
with respect to the QPO phase. In contrast, the PD and PA exhibit no
modulations in relation to the QPO phase, which is inconsistent with the
expectation of the Lense-Thirring precession of the inner flow. Further
theoretical studies are needed to conform with the observational results.Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ
High energy Millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in 1A 0535+262 with Insight-HXMT challenge current models
We studied the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillation (mHz QPO) in the 2020
outburst of the Be/X-ray binary 1A 0535+262 using Insight-HXMT data over a
broad energy band. The mHz QPO is detected in the 27-120 keV energy band. The
QPO centroid frequency is correlated with the source flux, and evolves in the
35-95 mHz range during the outburst. The QPO is most significant in the 50-65
keV band, with a significance of ~ 8 sigma, but is hardly detectable (<2 sigma)
in the lowest (1-27 keV) and highest (>120 keV) energy bands. Notably, the
detection of mHz QPO above 80 keV is the highest energy at which mHz QPOs have
been detected so far. The fractional rms of the mHz QPO first increases and
then decreases with energy, reaching the maximum amplitude at 50-65 keV. In
addition, at the peak of the outburst, the mHz QPO shows a double-peak
structure, with the difference between the two peaks being constant at ~0.02
Hz, twice the spin frequency of the neutron star in this system. We discuss
different scenarios explaining the generation of the mHz QPO, including the
beat frequency model, the Keplerian frequency model, the model of two jets in
opposite directions, and the precession of the neutron star, but find that none
of them can explain the origin of the QPO well. We conclude that the
variability of non-thermal radiation may account for the mHz QPO, but further
theoretical studies are needed to reveal the physical mechanism.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Functional screening reveals Toxoplasma prenylated proteins required for endocytic trafficking and rhoptry protein sorting
In the apicomplexans, endocytosed cargos (e.g., hemoglobin) are trafficked to a specialized organelle for digestion. This follows a unique endocytotic process at the micropore/cytostome in these parasites. However, the mechanism underlying endocytic trafficking remains elusive, due to the repurposing of classical endocytic proteins for the biogenesis of apical organelles. To resolve this issue, we have exploited the genetic tractability of the model apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii, which ingests host cytosolic materials (e.g., green fluorescent protein[GFP]). We determined an association between protein prenylation and endocytic trafficking, and using an alkyne-labeled click chemistry approach, the prenylated proteome was characterized. Genome editing, using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repaet/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9 (CRISPR/Cas9), was efficiently utilized to generate genetically modified lines for the functional screening of 23 prenylated candidates. This identified four of these proteins that regulate the trafficking of endocytosed GFP vesicles. Among these proteins, Rab1B and YKT6.1 are highly conserved but are non-classical endocytic proteins in eukaryotes. Confocal imaging analysis showed that Rab1B and Ras are substantially localized to both the trans-Golgi network and the endosome-like compartments in the parasite. Conditional knockdown of Rab1B caused a rapid defect in secretory trafficking to the rhoptry bulb, suggesting a trafficking intersection role for the key regulator Rab1B. Further experiments confirmed a critical role for protein prenylation in regulating the stability/activity of these proteins (i.e., Rab1B and YKT6.1) in the parasite. Our findings define the molecular basis of endocytic trafficking and reveal a potential intersection function of Rab1B on membrane trafficking in T. gondii. This might extend to other related protists, including the malarial parasites
