CP Violation, an experimental perspective
I present a review of current and near-future experimental investigations of
CP violation. In this review, I cover limits on particle electric dipole
moments (EDMs) and CP violation studies in the K and B systems. The wealth of
results from the new B factories provide impressive constraints on the CKM
quark mixing matrix elements. Current and future measurements are focusing on
processes dominated by loop diagrams, which probe physics at high mass scales
in low-energy experiments.Comment: Invited plenary talk, DPF meeting, August 200
Mapping the invisible hand: a body model of a phantom limb
After amputation, individuals often have vivid experiences of their absent limb (i.e., a phantom limb). Therefore, oneās conscious image of oneās body cannot depend on peripheral input only (Ramachandran & Hirstein, 1998). However, the origin of phantom sensations is hotly debated. Reports of vivid phantoms in the case of congenital absence of the limb show that memory of former body state is not necessary (Brugger et al., 2000). According to one view, phantoms may reflect innate organization of sensorimotor cortices (Melzack, 1990). Alternatively, phantoms could reflect generalization from viewing other peopleās bodies (Brugger et al., 2000), a sensorimotor example of the classic theory that understanding oneself follows from understanding the āgeneralized otherā (Mead, 1934, p. 154). Because phantom limbs cannot be stimulated, sensory testing cannot directly compare visual and somatosensory influences on representations of phantom limbs. Consequently, empirical investigation of phantoms is limited
A New Linear Inductive Voltage Adder Driver for the Saturn Accelerator
Saturn is a dual-purpose accelerator. It can be operated as a large-area
flash x-ray source for simulation testing or as a Z-pinch driver especially for
K-line x-ray production. In the first mode, the accelerator is fitted with
three concentric-ring 2-MV electron diodes, while in the Z-pinch mode the
current of all the modules is combined via a post-hole convolute arrangement
and driven through a cylindrical array of very fine wires. We present here a
point design for a new Saturn class driver based on a number of linear
inductive voltage adders connected in parallel. A technology recently
implemented at the Institute of High Current Electronics in Tomsk (Russia) is
being utilized[1].
In the present design we eliminate Marx generators and pulse-forming
networks. Each inductive voltage adder cavity is directly fed by a number of
fast 100-kV small-size capacitors arranged in a circular array around each
accelerating gap. The number of capacitors connected in parallel to each cavity
defines the total maximum current. By selecting low inductance switches,
voltage pulses as short as 30-50-ns FWHM can be directly achieved.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures. This paper is submitted for the 20th Linear

Rapid Manufactured Textiles
Rapid Manufacturing (RM) is increasingly becoming a viable manufacturing process due
to dramatic advantages that are achievable in the area of design complexity. Through the
exploration of the design freedom, this paper introduces the concept of manufacturing textiles for
potential smart and high performance textile applications. This paper discusses the current
limitations associated with the manufacture of textiles through RM and presents a novel
methodology for the generation of 3D conformal RM textile articles. The paper concludes that
through RM it is entirely possible to manufacture a structure that incorporates drape and free
movement properties directly comparable to conventional textiles.Mechanical Engineerin
On-board timeline validation and repair : a feasibility study
We report on the progress and outcome of a recent ESAfunded project (MMOPS) designed to explore the feasibility of on-board reasoning about payload timelines. The project sought to examine the role of on-board timeline reasoning and the operational context into which it would fit. We framed a specification for an on-board service that fits with existing practices and represents a plausible advance within sensible constraints on the progress of operations planning. We have implemented a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system and have used it to show how science gathering operations might be improved by its deployment
Constraints on holographic dark energy models using the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies
Using the absolute ages of passively evolving galaxies observed at different
redshifts, one can obtain the differential ages, the derivative of redshift
with respect to the cosmic time (i.e. ). Thus, the
Hubble parameter can be measured through the relation . By comparing the measured Hubble parameter at different
redshifts with the theoretical one containing free cosmological parameters, one
can constrain current cosmological models. In this paper, we use this method to
present the constraint on a spatially flat Friedman-Robert-Walker Universe with
a matter component and a holographic dark energy component, in which the
parameter plays a significant role in this dark energy model. Firstly we
consider three fixed values of =0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 in the fitting of data. If
we set free, the best fitting values are , ,
. It is shown that the holographic dark energy behaves like a
quintom-type at the level. This result is consistent with some other
independent cosmological constrains, which imply that is favored. We
also test the results derived from the differential ages using another
independent method based on the lookback time to galaxy clusters and the age of
the universe. It shows that our results are reliable.Comment: 18 pages including 7 figures and 1 tables. Final version for

Relativistic Effects in Nuclear Matter and Nuclei
The status of relativistic nuclear many-body calculations of nuclear systems
to be built up in terms of protons and neutrons is reviewed. In detail,
relativistic effects on several aspects of nuclear matter such as the effective
mass, saturation mechanism, and the symmetry energy are considered. This review
will especially focus on isospin asymmetric issues, since these aspects are of
high interest in astrophysical and nuclear structure studies. Furthermore, from
the experimental side these aspects are experiencing an additional boost from a
new generation of radioactive beam facilities, e.g. the future GSI facility
FAIR in Germany or SPIRAL2 at GANIL/France. Finally, the prospects of studying
finite nuclei in microscopic calculations which are based on realistic
interactions by including relativistic effects in calculations of low momentum
interactions are discussed.Comment: 57 pages, 16 figure
Exact Quantum Search by Parallel Unitary Discrimination Schemes
We study the unsorted database search problem with items from the
viewpoint of unitary discrimination. Instead of considering the famous
Grover's the bounded-error algorithm for the original problem, we
seek for the results about the exact algorithms, i.e. the ones succeed with
certainty. Under the standard oracle model , we demonstrate a tight lower bound of the number of queries
for any parallel scheme with unentangled input states. With the assistance of
entanglement, we obtain a general lower bound . We provide
concrete examples to illustrate our results. In particular, we show that the
case of N=6 can be solved exactly with only two queries by using a bipartite
entangled input state. Our results indicate that in the standard oracle model
the complexity of exact quantum search with one unique solution can be strictly
less than that of the calculation of OR function.Comment: 8 pages (revtex4), 6 figures. Revised version with some typo error

The interpretation of the field angle dependence of the critical current in defect-engineered superconductors
We apply the vortex path model of critical currents to a comprehensive
analysis of contemporary data on defect-engineered superconductors, showing
that it provides a consistent and detailed interpretation of the experimental
data for a diverse range of materials. We address the question of whether
electron mass anisotropy plays a role of any consequence in determining the
form of this data and conclude that it does not. By abandoning this false
interpretation of the data, we are able to make significant progress in
understanding the real origin of the observed behavior. In particular, we are
able to explain a number of common features in the data including shoulders at
intermediate angles, a uniform response over a wide angular range and the
greater discrimination between individual defect populations at higher fields.
We also correct several misconceptions including the idea that a peak in the
angular dependence of the critical current is a necessary signature of strong
correlated pinning, and conversely that the existence of such a peak implies
the existence of correlated pinning aligned to the particular direction. The
consistency of the vortex path model with the principle of maximum entropy is
introduced.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
