Electron spin resonance on a 2-dimensional electron gas in a single AlAs quantum well

Direct electron spin resonance (ESR) on a high mobility two dimensional electron gas in a single AlAs quantum well reveals an electronic gg-factor of 1.991 at 9.35 GHz and 1.989 at 34 GHz with a minimum linewidth of 7 Gauss. The ESR amplitude and its temperature dependence suggest that the signal originates from the effective magnetic field caused by the spin orbit-interaction and a modulation of the electron wavevector caused by the microwave electric field. This contrasts markedly to conventional ESR that detects through the microwave magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

A Coherent Through-Wall MIMO Phased Array Imaging Radar based on Time-Duplexed Switching

Through-the-Wall (TW) radar sensors are gaining increasing interest for security, surveillance and search and rescue applications. Additionally, the integration of Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques with phased array radar is allowing higher performance at lower cost. In this paper we present a 4-by-4 TW MIMO phased array imaging radar operating at 2.4 GHz with 200 MHz bandwidth. To achieve high imaging resolution in a cost-effective manner, the 4 Tx and 4 Rx elements are used to synthesize a uniform linear array (ULA) of 16 virtual elements. Furthermore, the transmitter is based on a single-channel 4-element time-multiplexed switched array. In transmission, the radar utilizes frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) waveforms that undergo de-ramping on receive to allow digitization at relatively low sampling rates, which then simplifies the imaging process. This architecture has been designed for the short-range TW scenarios envisaged, and permits sufficient time to switch between antenna elements. The paper first outlines the system characteristics before describing the key signal processing and imaging algorithms which are based on traditional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processing. These techniques are implemented in LabVIEW software. Finally, we report results from an experimental campaign that investigated the imaging capabilities of the system and demonstrated the detection of personnel targets. Moreover, we show that multiple targets within a room with greater than approximately 1 meter separation can be distinguished from one another

Kongish Daily: researching translanguaging creativity and subversiveness

    Get PDF
This paper analyses Kongish Daily, a Facebook page that trans-scripts local news in Hong Kong into a creative and dynamic mix of Cantonese in traditional Chinese characters, Romanisation and made-up characters, simplified Chinese, pinyin, English, Hong Kong English, other phonetic symbols, emoji and other signs and images. We trace the origin of the site and rationale for the Facebook page, and analyse it as a translanguaging phenomenon. The main objective is to understand the political motivations for the Facebook account and the social critique it offers through its dynamic translanguaging practice. In particular, we want to highlight the subversive nature of the translanguaging practice. Methodologically, it develops the participatory linguistics framework, which transformed our own understandings of the phenomenon as well as the cultural politics of translingualism and social media in Hong Kong

Interaction between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and traumatic childhood events predicts depression

Childhood trauma is associated with the onset and recurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD). The thermolabile T variant of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism (rs1801133) is associated with a limited (oxidative) stress defense. Therefore, C677T MTHFR could be a potential predictor for depressive symptomatology and MDD recurrence in the context of traumatic stress during early life. We investigated the interaction between the C677T MTHFR variant and exposure to traumatic childhood events (TCEs) on MDD recurrence during a 5.5-year follow-up in a discovery sample of 124 patients with recurrent MDD and, in an independent replication sample, on depressive syniptomatology in 665 healthy individuals from the general population. In the discovery sample, Cox regression analysis revealed a significant interaction between MTHFR genotype and TCEs on MOD recurrence (P = 0.017). Over the 5.5-year follow-up period, median time to recurrence was 191 days for T-allele carrying patients who experienced TCEs (T + and TCE +); 461 days for T - and TCE + patients; 773 days for T + and TCE - patients and 866 days for T - and TCE - patients. In the replication sample, a significant interaction was present between the MTHFR genotype and TCEs on depressive symptomatology (P = 0.002). Our results show that the effects of TCEs on the prospectively assessed recurrence of MOD and self-reported depressive symptoms in the general population depend on the MTHFR genotype. In conclusion, T-allele carriers may be at an increased risk for depressive symptoms or MOD recurrence after exposure to childhood trauma

Single-Channel Signal Separation Using Spectral Basis Correlation with Sparse Nonnegative Tensor Factorization

    Get PDF
A novel approach for solving the single-channel signal separation is presented the proposed sparse nonnegative tensor factorization under the framework of maximum a posteriori probability and adaptively fine-tuned using the hierarchical Bayesian approach with a new mixing mixture model. The mixing mixture is an analogy of a stereo signal concept given by one real and the other virtual microphones. An “imitated-stereo” mixture model is thus developed by weighting and time-shifting the original single-channel mixture. This leads to an artificial mixing system of dual channels which gives rise to a new form of spectral basis correlation diversity of the sources. Underlying all factorization algorithms is the principal difficulty in estimating the adequate number of latent components for each signal. This paper addresses these issues by developing a framework for pruning unnecessary components and incorporating a modified multivariate rectified Gaussian prior information into the spectral basis features. The parameters of the imitated-stereo model are estimated via the proposed sparse nonnegative tensor factorization with Itakura–Saito divergence. In addition, the separability conditions of the proposed mixture model are derived and demonstrated that the proposed method can separate real-time captured mixtures. Experimental testing on real audio sources has been conducted to verify the capability of the proposed method

Free-boundary conformal parameterization of point clouds

With the advancement in 3D scanning technology, there has been a surge of interest in the use of point clouds in science and engineering. To facilitate the computations and analyses of point clouds, prior works have considered parameterizing them onto some simple planar domains with a fixed boundary shape such as a unit circle or a rectangle. However, the geometry of the fixed shape may lead to some undesirable distortion in the parameterization. It is therefore more natural to consider free-boundary conformal parameterizations of point clouds, which minimize the local geometric distortion of the mapping without constraining the overall shape. In this work, we develop a free-boundary conformal parameterization method for disk-type point clouds, which involves a novel approximation scheme of the point cloud Laplacian with accumulated cotangent weights together with a special treatment at the boundary points. With the aid of the free-boundary conformal parameterization, high-quality point cloud meshing can be easily achieved. Furthermore, we show that using the idea of conformal welding in complex analysis, the point cloud conformal parameterization can be computed in a divide-and-conquer manner. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method
