    SURVEY ON VOCABULARY LEARNING STRATEGIES OF HIGH–QUALITY ENGLISH STUDIES PROGRAM STUDENTS, SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES, CAN THO UNIVERSITY, VIETNAM

    This research study aimed to investigate the usage of vocabulary learning strategies among English Studies students at Can Tho University (CTU), specifically those under the high-quality program at the School of Foreign Languages (SFL). The primary objective of the study was to identify the most commonly used strategies for learning English vocabulary and to compare the similarities and differences in how these strategies were applied among students by academic year. A total of 200 survey responses from SFL, CTU got involved in the study, and 12 of whom joined a semi-structured interview. The data gathered were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The results of this study provided insights into effective vocabulary learning strategies and would facilitate the improvement of English language teaching and learning practices at the university level.  Article visualizations

    Antibiotics in the Hong Kong metropolitan area: Ubiquitous distribution and fate in Victoria Harbour

    We investigated the presence and fate of 16 antibiotics belonging to seven groups (ÎČ-lactams, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, trimethoprim and amphenicols) in effluents of sewage plants and receiving waters in Hong Kong. Cefalexin, amoxicillin, ofloxacin and erythromycin-H 2O were ubiquitous in sea water throughout Victoria Harbour, indicating continuous discharge to the environment. This is one of the few studies reporting the frequent occurrence of cefalexin and amoxicillin in sewage effluents and sea water (170-5070 and 64-1670 ng/L in sewage; 6.1-493 and 0.64-76 ng/L in sea water, respectively). Mass flows from seven sewage plants discharged an estimated total of 14.4 kg/day to the Harbour. Typhoon shelters also appeared to play an important role as sources of antibiotics, as evidenced by elevated concentrations within their boundaries. Mass balance estimations suggested significant quantities of antibiotics are discharged to the Harbour without passage through treatment plants. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.     An Elite Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization for Solving Minimal Exposure Path Problem in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

    Mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs), a sub-class of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), have recently been a growing concern among the academic community. MWSNs can improve network coverage quality which reflects how well a region of interest is monitored or tracked by sensors. To evaluate the coverage quality of WSNs, we frequently use the minimal exposure path (MEP) in the sensing field as an effective measurement. MEP refers to the worst covered path along which an intruder can go through the sensor network with the lowest possibility of being detected. It is greatly valuable for network designers to recognize the vulnerabilities of WSNs and to make necessary improvements. Most prior studies focused on this problem under a static sensor network, which may suffer from several drawbacks; i.e., failure in sensor position causes coverage holes in the network. This paper investigates the problem of finding the minimal exposure paths in MWSNs (hereinafter MMEP). First, we formulate the MMEP problem. Then the MMEP problem is converted into a numerical functional extreme problem with high dimensionality, non-differentiation and non-linearity. To efficiently cope with these characteristics, we propose HPSO-MMEP algorithm, which is an integration of genetic algorithm into particle swarm optimization. Besides, we also create a variety of custom-made topologies of MWSNs for experimental simulations. The experimental results indicate that HPSO-MMEP is suitable for the converted MMEP problem and performs much better than existing algorithms
